Buying guide · 2017 to 2022 · Updated Oct 1, 2026

The second-generation NSX has no horror-story reputation, but its fuel-pump recalls, hybrid battery cover and engine-out valve service make the 2019 to 2021 cars the ones to find.

## The second-generation NSX as a used buy

The second-generation NSX is the one to buy with the paperwork in hand. A twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 teams with a trio of electric motors, drives all four wheels through a nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and together they make 573 hp. It went on sale for 2017, and the 2022 model year was the last. Just 2,908 were built, in an Ohio plant constructed for the car alone.

It suits someone who wants a hybrid supercar and will pay for a proper inspection. Luggage space is 4.4 cubic feet behind the engine, and there is no front trunk because that space holds hybrid hardware.

Most of the trouble is in the fuel system. Four recall campaigns sit on these years, three of them about fuel, so confirm the work was done before you talk price. Browse the [used Acura NSX listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/acura/nsx) or the [wider Acura inventory](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/acura) to see what is out there.

## second-generation NSX years and versions

The big dividing line is 2019. That year Acura gave it bigger anti-roll bars at both ends, firmer bushings on the rear toe links and reworked rear hubs, then retuned the SH-AWD, adaptive dampers, steering and stability control. It also developed a new Continental SportContact 6 tire. Acura claims the update lapped Suzuka nearly two seconds quicker. [Octane Files](https://www.octanefiles.com/cars/honda-nsx-nc1-nc2) picks the 2019 revision, which owners call the NC2, for anyone who plans to drive the car hard.

[Motor1](https://www.motor1.com/reviews/809001/used-acura-nsx-buying-guide/) points to a 2019-2021 car as the one to look for, with better chassis tuning and sharper responses. [Autojunket](https://autojunket.com/vehicles/2017-acura-nsx) rates 2019 to 2022 as the best years and says none is outright to avoid, though the 2017 needs the most vetting. Later model years only added colors: Indy Yellow for 2020 and Long Beach Blue Pearl for 2021.

Earlier cars are softer. Motor1 and Octane Files both say a 2017 or 2018 with the right service history could be the value play, and the [price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/acura/nsx) and the [market page](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/acura-nsx-acura-nsx-gen-ii) show how those years are trading now.

Every 2022 NSX was a Type S, and only 350 were built, 300 of them for the US. It makes 600 hp and 492 lb-ft, with bigger turbochargers taken from the NSX GT3 Evo racer, plus lower front motor gearing, wider tracks and bespoke semi-slick Pirellis. Honda says it laps two seconds quicker than a 2019 car. An optional Lightweight Package took another 26kg out and included carbon-ceramic brakes. Motor1 points to the standard NSX, not the Type S, as the one to hunt for value.

## Common second-generation NSX problems

Fuel system recalls dominate the record, and the rest are mostly irritations.

### Fuel pump failure

A 2018-2019 recall covered the in-tank low-pressure pump, which could fail and stall the engine. A later recall covers 2017-20 cars whose pump motors have defective impellers that can swell and seize the pump, and affected cars are on stop sale until repaired. Acura's bulletin lists difficulty starting, hesitation while driving and a check engine light with code P0087 as the symptoms.

### Fuel tank crossover couplers

Certain 2017 and 2018 cars were recalled because the crossover pipe couplers between the fuel tanks could leak. The repair replaced both fuel tanks, so ask for proof it was done.

### Brake light fuse

Certain 2017 cars were recalled because road vibrations could loosen screws in the center high-mount brake light and blow the fuse. It is a small job but a real safety item.

### Battery problems

A flat 12-volt battery lights up the dash and may leave the pop-out door handles stuck in, which Octane Files says usually is not serious. Exotic Car Hacks adds that some 2017 owners reported premature battery failures.

### Brake disc clicking

Clicking from the wheel area on 2017-21 cars can come from debris build-up on the brake discs. Acura's service bulletin gives cleaning all four discs as the fix.

### Rattles and carbon rotors

Owners have reported cracked carbon rotors, suspension rattles, uneven panel gaps and door rattles, according to Exotic Car Hacks. Those are owner reports, not a pattern the sources put a number on.

## What to check on a used second-generation NSX

Treat the inspection as the purchase, not a formality.

- Book a pre-purchase inspection with an Acura dealer or an independent shop that knows the NSX, covering the hybrid system, battery, cooling, transmission, suspension and electronics.
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup and ask for dealer paperwork showing the fuel pump, fuel tank and brake light work was completed.
- Ask whether the scheduled valve adjustment has been done, because the work means pulling the engine and is quoted at 28.3 labor hours.
- Have the space frame checked for accident repair by someone who knows the car, since a general body shop cannot assess it.
- Check how much hybrid battery warranty remains: it started at eight years or 100,000 miles, and some states allow ten years or 150,000 miles, so 2017 cars are close to the end of it.
- Start the car cold and watch for hard starting, hesitation under way or a check engine light, which are the signs of a failing fuel pump.
- Listen for clicking from the wheels on a slow drive, then ask if the discs have been cleaned.
- On a car with carbon-ceramic brakes, look over the rotors for cracks.
- Open and close both doors and walk the panel gaps, noting rattles and uneven fit.
- Ask whether the 12-volt battery has been replaced, since some 2017 owners reported premature failures.

## second-generation NSX running costs

Servicing is not cheap. [Exotic Car Hacks](https://www.exoticcarhacks.com/buyers-guides/acura-nsx-buyers-guide/) puts an oil change at about $350 at independent shops and as much as $500 at a dealer, and a major service at about $1,800 at a dealer. A set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires could be around $1,500, it says.

The big items are larger. [Carlyle](https://carlyle.vin/maintenance/acura/nsx) quotes $4,000 to $8,000 for a dual-clutch clutch or mechatronic service from about 30,000 miles, $6,000 to $12,000 for a hybrid battery pack and $8,000 to $15,000 to replace carbon-ceramic brakes. Those brakes were a $9,900 option on the 2020 car, so check which a car has before you budget.

## second-generation NSX recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists four recall campaigns for 2017 to 2022 NSXs. Three concern the fuel system: leaking crossover pipe couplers between the fuel tanks on 2017-2018 cars, a low-pressure fuel pump that may fail on 2018-2019 cars, and a later campaign covering 2017 to 2020 NSXs. The fourth covers 2017 cars whose center brake light circuit board screws may loosen and blow the brake light fuse. A campaign for a model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check the car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 8 complaints with NHTSA, 3 of them about the fuel or propulsion system. One report involved a crash, and none involved fires, injuries or deaths. These are reports, not proven faults.

## NHTSA recalls for the second-generation NSX

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2017 to 2022 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 23V858000 | Dec 19, 2023 | 2017 to 2020 | Fuel system, gasoline | Fuel pump failure can cause an engine stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 20V314000 | May 28, 2020 | 2018 to 2019 | Fuel system, gasoline | If the fuel pump fails, the engine can stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 18V599000 | Sep 7, 2018 | 2017 | Electrical system | Brake lights that do not work increase the risk of a crash. |
| 18V600000 | Sep 7, 2018 | 2017 to 2018 | Fuel system, gasoline | A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire. |

## Owner complaints to NHTSA about the second-generation NSX

Owners filed 8 complaints with NHTSA for the 2017 to 2022 model years (1 crash reported). A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

| Component | Complaints |
| --- | --- |
| Fuel/propulsion system | 3 |
| Unknown or other | 3 |
| Service brakes | 2 |
| Air bags | 1 |
| Electrical system | 1 |

## Our verdict

Buy a clean 2019 to 2021 car with a full inspection and every recall closed. Both Motor1 and Autojunket back that range, and Motor1 says the NSX has no horror-story reputation despite its complexity. Pick a 2017 only if the history is thorough, since it needs the most vetting. Compare against the [first-generation guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/acura/nsx-gen-1) if the older car appeals, or see [other used sports cars](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/best/used-sports-cars).

Skip any car with open fuel recalls or no record of the valve adjustment, and do not accept a general body shop's word on the space frame. Motor1 sees the value in the standard car.

## second-generation NSX: common questions

### What is the best second-generation NSX to buy?

A 2019 to 2021 NSX is the one to find. Motor1 and Octane Files both favor the 2019 and later chassis tuning, and Autojunket rates 2019 to 2022 as the best years. The 2022 Type S is the most focused but only 350 were built.

### What goes wrong with the second-generation NSX?

Mostly fuel system trouble. Recalls cover leaking fuel tank crossover couplers, failing low-pressure fuel pumps that can stall the engine, and a brake light fuse issue on 2017 cars. Owners also report weak batteries, brake disc clicking, rattles and cracked carbon rotors.

### Is the second-generation NSX reliable?

Mostly, with caveats. The sources describe no horror-story reputation despite the car's complexity, but fuel pump recalls matter and 2017 cars need the most vetting. Insist on a pre-purchase inspection and proof of recall work.

### How much does it cost to run a second-generation NSX?

Expect high bills. Exotic Car Hacks quotes about $350 to $500 for an oil change and about $1,800 for a major dealer service. Carlyle puts a dual-clutch service at $4,000 to $8,000 and a hybrid battery pack at $6,000 to $12,000.

### How much is a used second-generation NSX?

Asking prices for the 38 cars we track for sale right now run from $111,280 to $296,723, with a median of $147,913. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the second-generation NSX been recalled?

NHTSA lists 4 recall campaigns filed for the 2017 to 2022 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for fuel system, gasoline. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
