Buying guide · 2005 to 2016 · Updated Oct 1, 2026

The DB9 is a V12 grand tourer whose bills depend on its history: later cars bring more power and fixes, and a neglected one costs more than it saves.

## The DB9 as a used buy

The Aston Martin DB9 is a car where service history matters more than the badge on the boot or the year on the registration. Evo, Carwow and others agree that cheap, neglected examples are a false economy, and that is the one rule to hold to.

It replaced the DB7 and was the first production car built at Aston's Gaydon factory. Production ran until 2016, when the [DB11](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/aston-martin/db11) took over. It rides on a bonded and riveted aluminium structure, with a V12 up front, and it is better thought of as a fast grand tourer than an out and out sports car.

Most are automatics, and that suits the car. The ZF six-speed automatic is regarded as tough, and only about 5 percent of DB9s were reportedly ordered with the manual. Coupes and convertibles share their mechanicals, so [the used DB9 listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/aston-martin/db9) are mainly a question of body style, year and condition.

## DB9 years and versions

The first big change came in mid-2006 with the Sport Pack: stiffer springs, a revised front anti-roll bar, revised dampers, a ride height lowered by six millimetres and lighter five-spoke wheels. [evo](https://www.evo.co.uk/aston-martin/db9-coupe/17319/used-aston-martin-db9-2003-2015-review-specs-and-buying-guide) praised it for sharpening steering feel and response without spoiling the car as a tourer, and says about half of DB9s have it. Look at [the DB9 Coupe market](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/aston-martin-db9-coupe) with that in mind.

The 2009 model year update lifted power from 450bhp to 470bhp, improved the automatic's shifts and added Bilstein dampers with revised suspension arms and bushes. Adaptive dampers arrived on the Premium Sports Pack in early 2010 and became standard later that year. [Magneto](https://www.magnetomagazine.com/articles/2004-2016-aston-martin-db9-buying-guide-from-magneto-magazine/) and [Octane](https://www.octane-magazine.com/articles/buying-guides/aston-martin-db9-buying-guide-history-and-model-review/) both say post-2009 cars bring more power and useful updates that may justify the extra outlay.

The 2012/2013 revision borrowed many parts from the Virage and raised output to 510bhp, with carbon ceramic brakes and adaptive dampers. [Carwow](https://www.carwow.co.uk/editorial/classic-cars/buying-guides/aston-martin-db9-buying-guide) singles out a late 2012 car as the one to buy. The DB9 GT followed in 2015 with 540bhp and a 0-62mph time of 4.5sec, and a Bond Edition based on it was built for the film Spectre. The 2014 Carbon edition added carbon trim and gloss black wheels. [The DB9 GT listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/aston-martin-db9-gt) are the place to look for the final cars.

The Volante is mechanically identical to the Coupe and about 100kg heavier, with an electric hood that folds in 17 seconds. Magneto and Octane call it desirable, but few were ordered as manuals. Those two also report that the most wanted cars are the post-2011 limited editions, and that manuals in restrained colors with the Sport Pack command a premium. [Volantes for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/aston-martin-db9-volante) are easy enough to compare.

## Common DB9 problems

Nothing here is a reason to walk away, but several items are expensive when missed.

### Aluminium panel corrosion

Corrosion can set in at the edges of the aluminium panels: wheelarches, doors and bootlid. Bonded body panels are also hard to repair, and few specialists have the skills.

### Coil pack failure

Coil packs can fail. A misfire or hesitation under acceleration is the sign, according to Magneto, Octane and evo.

### Engine oil leaks

The V12 burns a little oil naturally. A leak is another matter, and [Car & Classic](https://www.carandclassic.com/buyer-guides/aston-martin-db9-models-and-specs) says it usually points to abuse.

### Gear selector faults

On early automatics an intermittent fault can drop the transmission into neutral when the selector switches earth on the chrome surround. Early automatics were also recalled over parking brake engagement.

### Suspension bolts

Recalls on cars built from 2007 to 2009 dealt with bolts in the subframe and the front suspension cam, which could affect the steering. Confirm the work was done.

### Electrical gremlins

Tire pressure monitoring, electric seats and the gear selector can all play up. Early Linn audio is unreliable, and the later Alpine system is better.

### Clutch wear on manuals

Manual clutches last somewhere between 15,000 and 25,000 miles, depending on which guide you read. Exotic Car List puts a clutch and flywheel job at around $2,000 for labor alone.

## What to check on a used DB9

Spend on a pre-purchase inspection by a marque specialist, and use this list at the viewing first.

- Ask for a full service history, ideally from a marque specialist, and confirm in writing that every recall was done.
- Check underneath for poor repairs or a scraped undercarriage, since bonded panels are hard to fix properly.
- Inspect the wheelarch lips, door edges and bootlid edge for bubbling paint, the first sign of aluminium corrosion.
- Look at the tires for uneven wear, which can point to damaged control arms or bad alignment, and listen for clunks from the suspension.
- Run the engine and feel for a misfire or hesitation under load, then look around the V12 for oil leaks.
- Cycle the door locks, power windows, seat controls, rising navigation screen and audio to find electrical faults.
- On a Volante, run the roof several times and look for fabric tears or signs of water getting in, because repairs are labor intensive.
- On a manual, feel for crunching or resistance going into second and ask how often the clutch has been replaced.
- On an automatic, work the selector through every position and check it engages cleanly each time.

## DB9 running costs

Servicing is due every 10,000 miles or annually. Exotic Car List quotes $575 to $1,500 for an annual service, while Carwow reckons on £2,000 a year (a UK figure) and fuel economy of around 15mpg.

Rear tires wear very quickly and brake pads nearly as fast, though the discs are generally durable. A manual clutch is a recurring cost, and replacing one with the flywheel runs around $2,000 for labor alone, says Exotic Car List.

Carwow calls the V12 and the automatic gearbox tough, and says the DB9 is not desperately unreliable but can be expensive to fix. Use [our price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/aston-martin/db9) to see what a car should cost before you add the bills above.

## DB9 recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 9 recall campaigns for the DB9 across 2005 to 2016. Among them are a battery supply cable that may be damaged (2005 to 2009), a front suspension cam bolt that could crack (2007 to 2008), and a faulty circuit board that may shift 2014 transmissions to neutral without driver input. Two campaigns concern a throttle pedal arm that may break, on 2008 to 2014 and 2012 to 2014 cars. Others cover parking interlock parts on 2006 cars, seats, latches and a 2009 to 2016 campaign on the Touchtronic II automatic.

A campaign covers certain cars within a year range, not every car. Check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before you buy. Owners have filed 9 complaints with NHTSA, 4 of them about the electrical system. Complaints are reports, not proven faults.

## NHTSA recalls for the DB9

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2005 to 2016 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 17V795000 | Dec 11, 2017 | 2005 to 2009 | Electrical system | If the battery cable is damaged and then grounded, the short circuit can increase the risk of a fire. |
| 17V796000 | Dec 11, 2017 | 2009 to 2016 | Power train | If the park pawl does not engage and the vehicle is stopped on a slope and exited without the parking brake being applied, the vehicle may unexpectedly roll, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 15V846000 | Dec 16, 2015 | 2009 to 2015 | Latches/locks/linkages | If the doors cannot be opened by an occupant from inside the vehicle, they may be trapped inside, increasing their risk of injury. |
| 14V753000 | Nov 25, 2014 | 2006 to 2014 | Seats | If the electronic control module fails, the seat heater could get hot enough that areas of the seat may overheat and smolder, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant. |
| 14V425000 | Jul 14, 2014 | 2014 | Power train | If the transmission shifts to neutral, the driver will not be able to maintain speed or move the vehicle out of traffic, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 14V010000 | Jan 16, 2014 | 2008 to 2014 | Vehicle speed control | If the accelerator pedal arm breaks, the engine will return to idle and the driver will be unable to maintain or increase engine speed, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 13V228000 | May 29, 2013 | 2012 to 2014 | Vehicle speed control | If the throttle pedal arm breaks, the engine will return to idle and the driver will be unable to maintain or increase engine speed, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 10V449000 | Sep 28, 2010 | 2007 to 2008 | Suspension | MOVEMENT OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WILL INFLUENCE THE DRIVER'S CONTROL OF THE STEERING OF THE VEHICLE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. |
| 05V513000 | Nov 7, 2005 | 2006 | Power train | THE PARK MAY NOT ENGAGE WHEN THE "P" BUTTON IN THE VEHICLE IS PRESSED TO SELECT PARK AND ALL INDICATORS SHOW THE PARK POSITION IS ACHIEVED. THIS COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE ROLL-AWAY CONDITION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. |

## Owner complaints to NHTSA about the DB9

Owners filed 9 complaints with NHTSA for the 2005 to 2016 model years (1 fire reported). A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

## Our verdict

Aim for a post-2009 automatic, with a late 2012 car as the one Carwow picks out, and add the Sport Pack if you can. The 2015 GT brought 540bhp. Pick the Volante only if you accept a labor intensive hood to maintain.

Skip cheap cars with thin histories. Insist on a specialist service record, proof that the recall work was done, and a clean underside with no corrosion at the panel edges. If you want a manual, expect to hunt for one.

## DB9: common questions

### What is the best DB9 to buy?

A post-2009 automatic is the safest choice, and Carwow picks a late 2012 car as the one to buy. Those years bring more power and updated suspension, and Magneto and Octane both say they may justify the extra cost. Add the Sport Pack if you can find it.

### What goes wrong with the DB9?

Watch for aluminium corrosion at panel edges, failing coil packs, oil leaks, electrical faults and selector problems on early automatics. Recalls also covered suspension bolts and the battery cable. Manual cars wear clutches quickly.

### Is the DB9 reliable?

Mostly, if the car has been looked after. Carwow rates the V12 and automatic as tough and says the DB9 is not desperately unreliable, but it can be expensive to fix. Neglected cars are a false economy.

### How much does it cost to run a DB9?

Exotic Car List quotes $575 to $1,500 for an annual service, while Carwow reckons on £2,000 a year. Rear tires and brake pads wear fast, and a manual clutch and flywheel job is around $2,000 in labor alone. Fuel economy is around 15mpg.

### How much is a used DB9?

Asking prices for the 42 cars we track for sale right now run from $28,445 to $110,075, with a median of $47,977. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the DB9 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 9 recall campaigns filed for the 2005 to 2016 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for electrical system. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
