## The Vanquish as a used buy

The Aston Martin Vanquish of 2014 to 2018 is a V12 grand tourer with carbon-fiber body panels over a bonded-aluminium structure. The first thing to settle when buying one is the gearbox, because the 2015 model year swapped the old six-speed automatic for an eight-speed ZF unit, and the specialists we read mostly steer buyers toward the newer one.

It suits someone who wants a hand-built flagship and accepts what that means. Motor1 says plainly that the Vanquish is not the most reliable or the cheapest to maintain. Carbon-ceramic brakes, carbon body repairs and a V12 that needs regular attention are where the money goes, so ask for a full service record.

## Vanquish years and versions

Early cars carry a six-speed Touchtronic II automatic and 565 bhp. From the 2015 model year the gearbox became an eight-speed Touchtronic III from ZF and output rose to 568 bhp. [Motor1](https://www.motor1.com/reviews/813328/used-aston-martin-vanquish-buying-guide/) quotes about 4.1 seconds to 60 mph and 183 mph for the 2014 car, against around 3.6 seconds and 201 mph for the 2015.

On the gearbox, the sources agree. [AMOC Texas](https://amoctexas.org/files/buyersguide.pdf) highly recommends a 2015 or later car for the much improved eight-speed, and Motor1 names the 2015-or-newer coupe as the one to look for. [Unusual Cars UK](https://unusualcars.co.uk/2026/10/18/aston-martin-vanquish-vanquish-s-2012-2018-history-buying-guide/) is kinder to the early car, saying a well-maintained six-speed is still a capable way into the carbon-bodied flagship.

The Vanquish S arrived for 2017 and 2018 with a new version of the 5.9-litre V12 making 603 hp, plus freer breathing, revised suspension, a quad-exit exhaust, sharper transmission programming and more assertive aerodynamics. Motor1 calls it the one to have if the budget stretches. Unusual Cars UK sums up the range as the eight-speed car being the best all-rounder, the Volante adding drama and the S bringing the final dynamic and power upgrades.

The Carbon Edition came in 2016, in black or white with gloss-black wheels and carbon-fiber interior trim. For 2018 the range was cut to a single model, the Vanquish S.

## Common Vanquish problems

The V12 is generally regarded as reliable, but these faults are the ones to check.

### Carbon-ceramic brake wear

Carbon-ceramic brakes and adaptive dampers are standard, and the discs are expensive to replace. [The Aston Advantage](https://www.astonadvantage.uk/aston-martin-pre-purchase-inspection) warns that cracking in the discs can be visible only once the brakes are dismantled.

### PCV valve failure

PCV valves on the V12 sometimes start to fail, letting oil get into the induction system. [Prestige & Performance Car](https://prestigeandperformancecar.com/aston-martin/aston-martin-vanquish-2012-2018-buyers-guide/) lists it among the engine's known weak points.

### Misfires from coils and plugs

Misfiring is likely to trace back to coils and plugs, which can fail from heat damage or water ingress. Oil leaking past the cam cover spark plug seals can cause the same symptom.

### Oil and coolant leaks

### Chafed loom wiring

Where the wiring loom moves through the bulkhead cut-outs it can chafe, which can cause starting and running gremlins that are hard to pin down.

### Gear position sensor

Gear position sensor problems mostly affect earlier cars. Later cars and the S have magnetic sensors fitted.

### Lights and support struts

Headlights and taillights can suffer from condensation. The support pistons for the doors, hood and trunk lid can also need replacing.

### Trim and electrics

Motor1 tells buyers to look for failing interior trim adhesives, sagging leather, electrical glitches and adaptive suspension problems.

## What to check on a used Vanquish

Pay a marque specialist to inspect any car you are serious about, and go through these first.

- Ask for invoices covering brake fluid, coolant, ignition service and transmission oil rather than accepting service stamps alone.
- Have any car with a history of body repair or panel replacement thoroughly checked, because carbon repairs are costly.
- Feel the lower carbon edges for curb damage and check the underfloor and body mounts for corrosion where different metals meet.
- Inspect the paint for scratches, chips and bubbling, which points to water under the surface.
- Have a specialist examine the carbon-ceramic discs (a listing won't show their condition), since cracks may not show without dismantling.
- Check the air filter housings for oil, which can point to PCV valve trouble.
- Listen for engine knocking and have any you hear investigated, as it could be big-end bearings.
- Listen for knocks or grinding from the transmission, and turn on full lock to check the differential.
- Cycle the driving modes and watch that the suspension changes, and look at the adaptive dampers for leaks.
- On a Volante, operate the hood mechanism several times to be sure it works every time.
- Look inside the headlights and taillights for condensation.

## Vanquish running costs

Prestige & Performance Car budgets around £8,500 for a set of front carbon discs and about £6,500 for the rears, which are UK figures. It also calls annual servicing crucial even at low use and says air filters should be replaced at least every two years. One specialist it quotes suggests changing transmission fluid every two years rather than Aston's four.

[Exotic Car Hacks](https://www.exoticcarhacks.com/buyers-guides/aston-martin-vanquish-buyers-guide/) puts an oil change at as little as $300 at independents and up to $800 at dealers. It gives a minor service at around $2,000 at a dealer and a major service at about $3,000, with front pads due around 40,000 miles.

## Vanquish recalls and complaints

NHTSA holds two recall campaigns for 2014 to 2018 Vanquish models. One, 17V796000, covers 2014 cars with the six-speed Touchtronic II automatic, where a communication error between the engine and transmission computers can stop the park pawl engaging. The other, 15V846000, covers 2014 to 2016 Vanquish models for interior door unlocking mechanisms that may not work when the car is locked from outside.

NHTSA lists no owner complaints for these years. Campaigns are filed for specific vehicles, so check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup to see whether it was affected and whether the work was done.

## Our verdict

Buy a 2015 or later car for the eight-speed gearbox, and stretch to a 2017 or 2018 Vanquish S if you can for the extra power and sharper chassis. A six-speed car can make sense if the history is excellent, but check that the 2014 transmission recall was carried out.

Do not compromise on the paperwork or the brakes. Insist on itemized invoices for the fluid and ignition work, a specialist inspection of the carbon-ceramic discs, and a body check that rules out undisclosed carbon repairs.
