Buying guide · 2008 to 2015 · Updated Oct 1, 2026

The first-generation R8 rewards a careful buyer: find a V8 with the manual gearbox and Magnetic Ride, and avoid anything with R tronic or a patchy service history.

## The first-generation R8 as a used buy

The first-generation R8 is best bought as a 4.2-litre V8 with the six-speed manual, and the R tronic automated gearbox is the part of the car most worth steering clear of. Audi built it as its first supercar, a mid-engined two-seater aimed at the Porsche 911, and it ran from 2008 to 2015.

It suits someone who wants a usable exotic: there is a 3.5-cubic-foot luggage box in the nose, but no back seat. Underneath it shares mechanical parts with the Lamborghini Gallardo, including the quattro all-wheel-drive system with a viscous coupling. Torque is split 15:85 front to rear normally, and up to 30:70 when the rear wheels slip.

The faults below are documented, and some give themselves away at a viewing: a leaking damper, a jerky R tronic shift, corrosion on the bonnet edge. Others, like oil use and intake carbon, are better settled with service records and a specialist's scan. Our [used R8 listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/audi/r8) show what is on the market now.

## first-generation R8 years and versions

Launch cars had a 414 hp 4.2-litre V8, the engine already used in the Audi RS4. The 5.2-litre V10, from the Gallardo family, arrived in 2009. A Spyder followed in 2010 with the V10, and a V8 Spyder was added in 2011. The V8 gained power to 424 hp in September 2010. The Spyder has an electric folding roof, loses the coupe's side blades and gets a slatted engine cover.

A full facelift came in July 2012. It replaced R tronic with an S tronic dual-clutch gearbox and made LED headlights, sat nav, Bluetooth and heated seats standard. The 543 hp R8 Plus arrived with it and was the top of the range until the second generation. The R8 GT and GT Spyder ran for roughly three years (2010-2013), weigh about 100 kg less than a standard car and have a V10 with around 30 hp extra.

Audi says the V10 reaches 60 mph in 3.7 seconds against 4.4 for the V8, yet the V8 gets the nod from several of the sources. [Carbuyer](https://www.carbuyer.co.uk/tips-and-advice/155060/used-audi-r8-buying-guide-2007-2015-mk1) calls it arguably the better bet for being lighter, more nimble and more economical. [New Car Net](https://www.newcarnet.co.uk/buying-guides-content/audi-r8-mk1-2007-2015) reckons it is as quick in the real world and better balanced, so a big premium for the V10 is hard to justify. If you want a V10 anyway, see the [5.2 coupes](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/audi-r8-gen-i-pre-facelift-v10-coupe) or the [5.2 Spyders](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/audi/r8/5-2-quattro-spyder).

On gearboxes, take the manual unless you are looking at a facelifted car with S tronic. R tronic is to be avoided, say [Hagerty](https://www.hagerty.com/media/market-trends/2023-bull-market-pick-2007-15-audi-r8/) and [CarBuzz](https://carbuzz.com/first-generation-audi-r8-v8-is-a-better-used-buy-than-the-v10/) alike. The gated manual is also the transmission collectors want most, according to [Carnow](https://www.carnow.com.br/2022/08/18/audi-r8-mk1-buyers-guide/). Cars with Audi Magnetic Ride are recommended, as its Normal and Sport modes noticeably change the drive. Cars without extras are fairly basic, so check what is fitted.

## Common first-generation R8 problems

### R tronic gearbox faults

The hydraulic actuator can fail or lose pressure, causing neutral drops, a refusal to select reverse or jerky shifts, according to [Performance Car Intelligence](https://www.performancecarintelligence.com/guides/audi-r8-buying-guide). Carnow quotes £2000 for a new clutch plus fitting, a UK figure.

### Magnetic Ride dampers

The dampers can leak from around 30,000 miles and cannot be rebuilt, so replacement is the only cure. Look for oil film on the damper bodies.

### Cracked front structure

On the earliest cars (2007-2009), the front aluminium structure can crack around the upper suspension mounts after pothole impacts. Carnow says to walk away from any car with cracks in the chassis structure.

### Oil consumption

Low-mileage cars can use a lot of oil, and three of the guides we read say it tends to settle down as the miles build up. Ask about top-ups.

### Intake valve carbon

Both the 4.2 FSI and 5.2 FSI can suffer carbon build-up on the intake valves, which can cut power by 10% or more.

### Warning lights

Engine warning lights can come from poor-quality fuel or damaged coil pack wiring, says New Car Net. Scan for stored faults before you buy.

### Corrosion and leaks

Bodywork corrosion can hit the bonnet's leading edge, the bottoms of both doors and the rear wheelarches. Oil-cooler lines can also corrode, though a rear oil leak fix should cost little more than £200 (UK figure, per Carnow).

### A/C and V10 cam wear

The A/C compressor can fail, and replacing it is labor-intensive because the engine is mid-mounted. On the V10, fuel-pump followers can wear and score the camshaft lobe.

## What to check on a used first-generation R8

Bring this list to the viewing, and have a specialist cover the structure and dampers on the lift.

- Ask for a complete, documented service history and walk away if it has gaps.
- Check for signs of track use, and be wary of any car that has done laps without paperwork showing how it was maintained.
- Look at the front structure around the upper suspension mounts for cracks, and walk away if you find any.
- Inspect the dampers on Magnetic Ride cars for leaks, especially on cars past 30,000 miles.
- On an R tronic car, test for jerky shifts, neutral drops and reluctance to engage reverse.
- Check the bonnet's leading edge, the lower door edges and the rear wheelarches for corrosion.
- Look at the carbon-fibre side blades for peeling lacquer and the aluminium panels for dents.
- Inspect the alloy wheels and tire sidewalls for curb damage, since replacement wheels are very costly.
- Ask how much oil the car has been using between services, and check the level.
- Run a fault scan for stored engine codes, and ask what fuel the car has been given.
- Confirm the A/C blows cold before you sign.

## first-generation R8 running costs

Servicing is priced by Carbuyer at £485 for a minor and £925 for a major, with the V10 costing about £100 more (UK figures). A set of tires runs £700 to £1,000 and pads around £360, it says. Carbon-ceramic discs cost four figures to replace, according to Carbuyer and Performance Car Intelligence.

Budget separately for the faults above: R tronic clutch work, replacement dampers and a labor-heavy A/C compressor job. Check our [R8 price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/audi/r8) for current prices, and the [cheapest R8 listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cheapest/audi/r8) if you are comparing cars.

## first-generation R8 recalls and complaints

NHTSA holds one recall campaign for these model years. It covers 2011 R8 Spyders built from May 18, 2010 to June 22, 2011, where the fuel supply line may rub against the heat shield in the engine compartment and cause a small fuel leak. A recall for one model year does not mean every car was affected, so check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 12 complaints with NHTSA, six about suspension and three about structure. Those are reports, not proven faults. None involved crashes, fires, injuries or deaths.

## NHTSA recalls for the first-generation R8

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2008 to 2015 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 11V390000 | Aug 1, 2011 | 2011 | Fuel system, other | A FUEL LEAK IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE FIRE. |

## Owner complaints to NHTSA about the first-generation R8

Owners filed 12 complaints with NHTSA for the 2008 to 2015 model years. A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

| Component | Complaints |
| --- | --- |
| Suspension | 6 |
| Structure | 3 |
| Engine | 1 |
| Engine and engine cooling | 1 |

## Our verdict

Buy a V8 with the manual gearbox and Magnetic Ride, either coupe or Spyder. [Consumer Guide Auto](https://consumerguide.com/used/2008-14-audi-r8/) says the V10's gains do not justify its steeper pricing. A facelifted car with S tronic is the one exception to the manual rule. Skip R tronic cars.

Insist on complete service records, and have an inspection check the front structure for cracks, the dampers for leaks and the engine for stored fault codes. If you want a newer car, compare with our [R8 vs Huracan](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/compare/audi-r8-vs-lamborghini-huracan) page or the [second-generation guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/audi/r8-gen-2).
