## The RS 6 Avant as a used buy

The Audi RS 6 Avant (C8) reached the United States for 2021, and the thing to check first on a used one is the 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Owner discussions of the belt starter-generator describe an electrical warning, then cascading faults, and sometimes a car that will not drive.

Every normal car has a 3,996 cc twin-turbo V8 with direct injection, cylinder deactivation and that mild-hybrid system. Power goes through an eight-speed torque-converter automatic and permanent quattro. The car weighs roughly 5,000 pounds, and rear-wheel steering makes it feel smaller at parking speeds and steadier at speed.

It suits someone who wants a family wagon with a broad cargo area and a 40/20/40 split rear seat, and who accepts that it is a composed grand tourer rather than a playful sports car. Budget for performance-car running costs.

## RS 6 Avant years and versions

Model years 2021 to 2023 use the original calibration of 591 hp and 590 lb-ft. Audi quoted 3.5 seconds to 60 mph. From 2024 the car is sold as the RS 6 Avant performance, with 621 hp and 627 lb-ft and a claimed 3.3 seconds.

The performance car also has a revised, lighter center differential (nominal 40:60 front/rear split, up to 70 percent forward or 85 percent rearward), faster shift logic and less insulation and trim to save weight. Suspension matters as much as year. Drive finds standard RS air suspension the most convincing all-rounder, with a supple low-speed ride. Dynamic Ride Control cars are better tied down when pushed but lean toward the uncompromising. Cars on 21-inch wheels give more sidewall than those on 22s.

Early ownership discussions show a meaningful cluster of belt starter-generator failures, with an electrical warning, cascading faults and sometimes loss of drivability. Some 48-volt warnings are not cured by replacing the generator, so fault codes and repair paperwork matter.

### Loss of electrical power

## What to check on a used RS 6 Avant

Spend your time on electronics, wheels and brakes.

- Ask for invoices showing starter-generator diagnosis or replacement, and verify the part and software history.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA, since a model-year recall list does not prove a given car was included.
- Inspect every wheel on both faces and record tire brand, size, date code and tread depth, because the 21- and 22-inch low-profile wheels are vulnerable.
- Measure pad and rotor life, and have a technician judge the condition of carbon-ceramic rotors if fitted.
- Check for oil leaks, including the oil filter housing and upper oil pan, and look for metal debris in the oil filter.
- Look for rodent damage to wiring, underbody rust, and signs of paint repair or panel misalignment.

It puts 48-volt battery or belt-alternator-starter faults at $900 to $2,800.

Two are filed under back over prevention (2021 to 2026 and 2022), and the 2021 to 2026 one mentions a software error that may stop the rearview camera image displaying as intended. The third covers a software error that may make the instrument panel display fail on 2021 cars.
