Buying guide · 2004 to 2011 · Updated Oct 1, 2026

The first Continental GT is a W12 grand tourer whose bills depend on how well it was kept, so service history and a specialist inspection matter more than trim.

## The first-generation Continental GT as a used buy

The first-generation Continental GT is a car to buy on condition, not on badge or trim. Sources agree that a well-kept example is the one to find, and that neglected ones are where the trouble is. Petrolicious, Classic & Sports Car and Octane Files all say low-mileage or little-used cars have more issues than ones that are driven and serviced regularly.

It covers the 2004 to 2011 model years. Every version has a twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12, four-wheel drive and a six-speed ZF automatic. The early cars make 552bhp. A comprehensive facelift in 2011 produced essentially new models and ended this generation.

Expect electrical and ancillary faults rather than a failed drivetrain. [Classic & Sports Car](https://www.classicandsportscar.com/features/buyers-guide-bentley-continental-gt) and others point to batteries, sensors, air suspension and wiring as the usual sources of grief, and a specialist inspection is the way to find them before you pay.

## first-generation Continental GT years and versions

The coupe came first, launched in 2003 as the first Bentley built under VW ownership. The GTC convertible followed at the end of 2006, badged as a 2007 model and sharing the coupe's drivetrain. [Petrolicious](https://petrolicious.com/articles/2003-2011-bentley-continental-gt-buying-guide) says GTCs usually carry a premium over coupes while performing much the same.

The 600bhp GT Speed and GTC Speed arrived in 2007, according to Petrolicious and [Classic Trader](https://www.classic-trader.com/en/magazine/bentley-continental-gt-buying-guide). Octane Files says the GT Speed was the first Bentley to top 200mph, with the GTC Speed arriving in 2009. The Supersports came in 2009 with 621bhp, no rear seat, carbon fibre trim, a 110kg weight saving and carbon-ceramic brakes. It can also run on E85. A convertible was added in 2010.

Petrolicious and Classic Trader call the Supersports the most desirable of the generation, but say the less compromised Speed models from 2009 may suit grand touring better. [Octane Files](https://www.octanefiles.com/cars/bentley-continental-gt-1st-gen) argues that condition matters more than specification, and that most buyers are best served by a coupe or GTC in good order with the Mulliner pack. That pack added diamond-quilted seats and unique alloys. Limited runs include the 2007 Diamond Series of 400 cars and the 2011 Supersports Convertible ISR of 100.

[MDM Technik](https://www.mdmtechnik.co.uk/buying-a-bentley-continental-gt/) advises avoiding cars with bodykits, wheels of 20 inches or more, wraps and speed or supersport body conversions. ## Common first-generation Continental GT problems

The faults below come from several specialist sources, and none of them says every car suffers from all of them.

### Turbo and engine faults

Blue smoke can signal a pending turbo failure. Coil packs fail on occasion, and Petrolicious reports a small number of head-gasket failures, with a damaged or corroded radiator core a contributing factor. The repair is an engine-out job.

### Brake and parking brake

The electronic parking brake unit tends to give problems. Carbon-ceramic cars have their own recall history for loose rear rotor screws, and replacement discs cost far more than steel ones.

### Electrical gremlins

Corroded switches and damaged wiring cause many electrical faults, and damp footwells point to trouble ahead. Classic & Sports Car says weak batteries often trigger random faults, since there is one for starting and another for everything else. Wet control modules under the scuttle can also cause odd behavior.

### Heat-related early faults

Early cars can suffer from vacuum hoses and boost control failing through heat. Classic & Sports Car is the source for this, and it applies to early cars only.

### Air suspension struts

Air struts can fail, and replacements need coding and set-up. Listen for knocking over bumps too, which points to worn rubber bushes.

### Water pump

Water pumps can fail, and replacing one means taking the front end off. Ask whether it has been done and what the invoice shows.

### Tyre-pressure sensors

The sensors have integrated batteries that run flat, so they last about five years according to several sources. Budget to replace them on an older car.

### Gearbox electrics

The gearbox itself is sturdy. Problems usually trace to faulty electrical connectors or cheap sensors and control units, so a fault is not automatically a rebuild.

## What to check on a used first-generation Continental GT

Pay for a specialist inspection, then add these checks at the viewing.

- Get a specialist to scan the car with diagnostic equipment, because faults show as stored codes.
- Ask for invoices showing the spark plugs were replaced every four years, since they are expensive and hard to reach.
- Look for blue smoke on a cold start and under load, which can mean a turbo on its way out.
- Check the radiator core for damage or corrosion, given its link to head-gasket failure.
- Ask whether the water pump has been replaced and what it cost.
- Check the footwells for damp and the scuttle area for wet control modules.
- Test the electronic parking brake several times, applying and releasing it.
- Listen for knocking over bumps that suggests worn rubber bushes, and check the air struts hold the ride height.
- Check the date on the tyre-pressure sensors and the state of both batteries.
- On a GTC, operate the fabric hood and check its hydraulics and ECU, as faults mean big bills.
- Check the headlining for sagging.
- Ask which recall work has been done, including the fuel filter and brake pipe clip, and on carbon-ceramic cars the rear rotor screws.

## first-generation Continental GT running costs

Petrolicious says carbon-ceramic replacement brakes cost far more than steel discs, and steel ones can be pricey too. Classic & Sports Car warns that alloy wheels are expensive to replace, so check them for damage.

Spark plugs are expensive and hard to access, and four-year intervals mean a service bill that lands whatever the mileage. Head-gasket repair needs the engine out, and a water pump needs the front end off, so labor drives both bills. The facts we have give no firm figures for these, so ask a specialist to quote before you buy.

Petrolicious and Classic Trader suggest a high-mileage car with good maintenance can be a better choice than a pampered one that rarely moves. ## first-generation Continental GT recalls and complaints

NHTSA holds four recall campaigns for 2004 to 2011 cars. One covers 2004 Continental GTs for insufficient clearance between a brake pipe and an engine-mounted hose clip, which could lead to brake pipe failure. Another covers 2004 to 2008 GT, GT Speed and GTC cars where road salt could corrode the fuel filter and cause a fuel leak.

A third covers 2007 to 2011 GT and GTC cars built from July 2006 to June 2010 with carbon-ceramic brake discs. The fourth concerns incorrect airbag cover tether lengths on a small number of 2004 and 2006 GTs. A campaign for a model year does not mean every car was affected, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Owners have filed 7 complaints with NHTSA, one involving a crash and none fires, injuries or deaths. They cover air bags, engine, engine and engine cooling, fuel and propulsion, structure and suspension. These are reports, not proven faults.

## NHTSA recalls for the first-generation Continental GT

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2004 to 2011 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 13V484000 | Oct 17, 2013 | 2007 to 2011 | Service brakes, hydraulic | Failure of the securing screws may result in a reduction of braking ability, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 08V217000 | May 15, 2008 | 2004 to 2008 | Fuel system, gasoline | A FUEL LEAK IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE. |
| 08V072000 | Feb 15, 2008 | 2004 to 2006 | Air bags | IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THIS COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE AIR BAG ITSELF DURING DEPLOYMENT INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURIES. |
| 06V313000 | Aug 17, 2006 | 2004 | Service brakes, hydraulic | THIS FAILURE COULD RESULT IN AN INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCE WHEN BRAKING INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH AND ALSO A RISK OF FIRE DUE TO BRAKE FLUID ESCAPING INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. |

## Owner complaints to NHTSA about the first-generation Continental GT

Owners filed 7 complaints with NHTSA for the 2004 to 2011 model years (1 crash reported). A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

## Our verdict

Buy a well-maintained coupe or GTC, ideally with the Mulliner pack, and put the money into a car with a full service history over a lower-mileage one that sat. The 2009-on Speed models are the better grand tourer if you want more performance without the Supersports' missing rear seat. Supersports cars are the most desirable but the least practical. Skip bodykits, big wheels and wraps.

Insist on a specialist inspection with diagnostics, proof of plug changes, and recall work done. If you want a later or newer car, compare with the [second-generation guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/bentley/continental-gt-gen-2).

## first-generation Continental GT: common questions

### What is the best first-generation Continental GT to buy?

For most buyers, a coupe or GTC in good order with the Mulliner pack is the one to find. Octane Files says condition matters more than specification. The Supersports is the most desirable, and the 2009-on Speed models make a less compromised grand tourer.

### What goes wrong with the first-generation Continental GT?

Expect electrical and ancillary faults more than drivetrain failures. Sources list turbo wear, coil packs, air struts, water pumps, the parking brake, flat sensor batteries and weak car batteries. A small number of head-gasket failures have been reported.

### Is the first-generation Continental GT reliable?

Mostly, if it has been looked after. Sources say neglected or little-used cars have more issues than regularly serviced ones. The gearbox is sturdy, and many faults trace to electrics.

### How much does it cost to run a first-generation Continental GT?

Servicing is not cheap, and sources flag the plugs as expensive and hard to reach. Carbon-ceramic brake replacements and alloy wheels cost a lot, and head-gasket and water pump jobs need heavy labor. Get a specialist quote before buying.

### How much is a used first-generation Continental GT?

Asking prices for the 116 cars we track for sale right now run from $20,149 to $77,899, with a median of $37,883. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the first-generation Continental GT been recalled?

NHTSA lists 4 recall campaigns filed for the 2004 to 2011 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for service brakes, hydraulic. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
