## The F90 M5 as a used buy

The BMW F90 M5 has a plastic coolant expansion tank that can split, and a leak can reach the fuel injectors sitting beneath it. It is the sixth-generation M5, the first with an automatic gearbox only and the first with all-wheel drive, and it runs from 2018 to 2024 in the US.

Every US car has a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, an 8-speed automatic and M xDrive, with a driver-selectable 2WD mode. The manual that North America used to get was dropped, according to [BimmerBench](https://bimmerbench.com/buyers-guide/f90/), so a stick-shift car is not on the table.

[BMWBlog](https://www.bmwblog.com/2024/10/01/bmw-f90-m5-used-performance-bargain/) calls the F90 a compelling used performance car and a one-car solution, though it warns that parts are expensive. If you want to see what is out there, start with [used F90 M5 listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/bmw/m5/f90).

## F90 M5 years and versions

The base M5 arrived for 2018 with 600 hp and 553 lb-ft. The Competition followed for 2019 with 617 hp, stiffer suspension tuning and no engine hardware changes. It sits 7mm lower and adds gloss black grilles, black chrome tailpipes and unique 20-inch wheels.

[CarScout](https://usecarscout.com/blog/used-bmw-m5-f90-buying-guide) finds the Competition's stiffer chassis matters more near the limit than in daily driving, and a well-kept base car gives up little on the road. For [What Breaks](https://what-breaks.com/bmw/m5-f90), the standard car is softer and the better all-rounder, while the Competition is noticeably firmer on bad asphalt.

The facelift came for 2021 with new headlights, LED taillights, revised bumpers, a 12.3-inch central display and a Track mode. The Competition got new shock absorbers with recalibrated damper control. Sources prefer post-facelift cars because the revised dampers make a real difference, and CarScout adds that the newer infotainment with wireless CarPlay is a genuine step up for everyday use. Those cars also command a premium.

The M5 CS was a one-year model, for 2022, with 627 hp, carbon-fiber bucket seats and bronze wheels and grille trim. CarScout warns that parts supply is thin and body shops know its carbon panels poorly. For 2023 the Competition became an option package and the CS was gone. A limited Edition 35 Years, based on the Competition, had 35 units for the US. Current CS cars are tracked on [our CS market page](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/bmw-m5-f90-m5-cs). CarScout and What Breaks both say carbon-ceramic brakes only make sense on track, and cost a lot to replace if abused on the street.

## Common F90 M5 problems

The coolant tank has a recall behind it, so start there.

### Coolant expansion tank

The plastic tank can split at the cap threads or seam, anywhere from 11,000 miles to past 100,000, according to CarScout. BMW issued emissions recall 24E-A01 to replace it on sedans built November 7, 2017 to September 9, 2022.

### Fuel injector damage

A leaking tank can damage the injectors on cylinders 5 to 8, which sit directly beneath it. Replacing injectors costs $1,500 to $1,820 out of pocket, CarScout says.

### Rod bearing wear

Wear is documented on the S63 V8 but is reduced on the F90 compared with the F10 M5, per several of the sources we read. CarScout cites injectors leaking fuel into the oil as a leading cause.

### Oil use and valve stem seals

Smoke on start-up or on hard acceleration and deceleration, plus oil-fouled plugs, point to oil consumption and valve stem seal trouble, BimmerBench reports.

### Front subframe clunk

Loose front subframe bolts produce a clunk from the front end.

### Adaptive damper failure

The adaptive dampers can leak oil or fault and lock into their hardest setting, according to What Breaks.

## What to check on a used F90 M5

- Inspect the coolant expansion tank cold, looking for dried coolant crust and residue on the injectors below it.
- Ask for the full oil change record and look for intervals shorter than the onboard indicator would allow, which sources recommend.
- Start the car cold and watch the exhaust for smoke as it fires up.
- Plug in a BMW-capable diagnostic tool and read out any stored fault codes.
- Ask a BMW dealer whether recall 24E-A01 and every other campaign is closed, and whether any warranty extensions apply.
- Listen over bumps for a front-end clunk that could mean loose subframe bolts.
- Look at the dampers for oil weeping, and see whether the ride is stuck at its firmest.
- Ask how a car with carbon-ceramic brakes was used, and inspect the discs.
- Walk away from modified or tuned cars, and book a pre-purchase inspection on one you like.

## F90 M5 running costs

CarScout puts preventive rod bearing replacement at about $4,500 at BMW specialist shops, and injector replacement at $1,500 to $1,820.

BimmerBench says owners paid $176 to $265 at an independent shop and $260 to $450 at a dealer for an M differential fluid service. Staggered wheel widths mean two different tire sizes, CarScout notes, and carbon-ceramic brakes are costly to replace.

## F90 M5 recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 6 recall campaigns for 2018 to 2024 M5s. The most serious for a buyer are emissions recall 24E-A01 (built November 2017 to September 2022), which replaces the coolant tank, 19V513, a 2019 high pressure fuel pump that may not be properly attached, with a flange that can crack and leak fuel, and 19V883, a transmission wiring harness that can become damaged and short circuit (2019 to 2020). Two 2018 campaigns cover engine software that may stop the fuel pump (18V323) and a fuel level sensor that can misread the gauge (18V473). Check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup to see which apply.

Owners have filed 19 complaints with NHTSA, most about the engine (9), then the power train (5), with one fire reported and no crashes, injuries or deaths. They are reports, not proven faults.

## NHTSA recalls for the F90 M5

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2018 to 2024 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 20V598000 | Sep 30, 2020 | 2020 to 2021 | Back over prevention | If the driver relies on only the rearview camera image, the reduced rearview image view can increase the risk of a crash or injury. |
| 19V883000 | Dec 11, 2019 | 2019 to 2020 | Power train | An electrical short circuit can cause the transmission to shift to neutral resulting in a loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 19V684000 | Sep 28, 2019 | 2018 to 2020 | Back over prevention | The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash. |
| 19V513000 | Jul 3, 2019 | 2019 | Fuel system, other | A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire. |
| 18V473000 | Jul 17, 2018 | 2018 | Fuel system, gasoline | An incorrect fuel reading may lead to the vehicle stalling and increase the risk of a crash. |
| 18V323000 | May 16, 2018 | 2018 | Electrical system | If the fuel pump stops, the vehicle will stall, increasing the risk of a crash. |

## Owner complaints to NHTSA about the F90 M5

Owners filed 19 complaints with NHTSA for the 2018 to 2024 model years (1 fire reported). A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

| Component | Complaints |
| --- | --- |
| Engine | 9 |
| Power train | 5 |
| Unknown or other | 4 |
| Fuel/propulsion system | 3 |
| Electrical system | 2 |
| Engine and engine cooling | 2 |

## Our verdict

Buy a 2021 or later Competition. Sources favor the post-facelift cars for their dampers and infotainment, and the Competition is the car that gets the recalibrated damper control. If you mostly drive on rough roads, the softer base M5 is the better all-rounder and gives up little on the road. Skip the CS unless you accept thin parts supply and body shops unfamiliar with its carbon panels. Our [BMW M5 price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/bmw/m5) shows where each version sits.

Insist on proof the coolant tank was replaced under the recall, plus an oil change record. If you are weighing older cars, see our [F10 M5 buying guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/bmw/m5-f10) and [E60 M5 buying guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/bmw/m5-e60). Walk away from tuned examples.

## F90 M5: common questions

### What is the best F90 M5 to buy?

A 2021 or later Competition is the pick, since most sources prefer post-facelift cars for the dampers and infotainment. The base M5 gives up little on the road and rides softer. Get a full service history whichever you choose.

### What goes wrong with the F90 M5?

The coolant expansion tank is the main one, as it can split and damage the injectors beneath it. Other reported issues include oil consumption, front subframe clunks and adaptive damper failure. Rod bearing wear is documented but reduced compared with the F10.

### Is the F90 M5 reliable?

Mostly. One source calls the F90 one of the more reliable BMWs, with no major serious issues. Still, confirm the coolant tank recall is done and that oil changes were frequent.

### How much does it cost to run an F90 M5?

Expect expensive parts. Preventive rod bearings run around $4,500 and injectors $1,500 to $1,820, and an M differential fluid service cost owners $176 to $450. Tires come in two sizes because of the staggered fitment.

### How much is a used F90 M5?

Asking prices for the 173 cars we track for sale right now run from $34,398 to $189,999, with a median of $64,498. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the F90 M5 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 6 recall campaigns filed for the 2018 to 2024 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for back over prevention. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
