Buying guide · 2015 to 2019 · Updated Oct 1, 2026

The F86 X6 M pairs a 575 hp twin-turbo V8 with a body shared with the X5 M, and its costliest risks sit in the engine bay, so a specialist inspection matters.

## The F86 X6 M as a used buy

The BMW X6 M (F86) is the high-performance version of the F16 X6, engineered by BMW M GmbH and sharing most of its mechanical parts with the F85 X5 M, according to [BMW M Registry](https://bmwmregistry.com/model_faq.php?id=71). North American cars were built from December 2014 through May 2019, with final assembly in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Production for North America was 3,792 cars.

It suits someone who wants the S63 B44T2, a 4,395-cc twin-turbo V8 rated at 575 hp (DIN) and 553 lb-ft, in a coupe-style body. There is one gearbox, a ZF eight-speed automatic, and xDrive all-wheel drive calibrated to feel rear-driven.

The faults to check for are a turbo coolant pump that can fail unnoticed, rod bearing wear, ignition coils, oil consumption and sump leaks. Our [used X6 M listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/bmw/x6-m) show what is for sale now.

## F86 X6 M years and versions

BMW changed almost nothing during the run. The main exception was iDrive 5.0, fitted from August 2016 production. The one special edition was the Black Fire Edition, sold in the USA as the Black Sapphire Edition with slightly less special content.

[BimmerBench's buyer's guide](https://bimmerbench.com/buyers-guide/f86/) says the 2015 to 2018 cars are the years to buy. Exotic Car Hacks notes that a later 2019-on X6 M was given 600 horsepower against the F86's 575. The 2019 model year also carries a suspension recall (see below).

[Exotic Car Hacks](https://www.exoticcarhacks.com/car-reviews/bmw-x6-m-buyers-guide/) lists a good color combination, carbon interior trim and the upgraded sound system as desirable. Wheels were 21-inch as standard, with 20-inch a no-cost option. Brakes are steel only: carbon ceramic rotors were never offered.

Our [F86 market page](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/bmw-x6-m-gen-ii) shows every example for sale, which helps when you want to compare cars by year and options.

## Common F86 X6 M problems

### Turbo coolant pump failure

The auxiliary pump that feeds coolant to the turbos after shutdown can fail unnoticed, and [PistonHeads](https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-buying-guides/bmw-x5-6-m-f85-f86--ph-used-buying-guide/42997) says a faulty pump lets the turbos cook the oil. Confirm it works before you buy.

### Rod bearing wear

Rod bearing wear is a common S63 problem according to [Bimmerly](https://bimmerly.com/bmw-s63-reliability/), and the cure means opening the bottom of the engine. New bearings every 60K miles are suggested.

### Ignition coil and plug wear

Coil failure is common, even below 30k miles, and Bimmerly advises renewing all coils and plugs between 30k and 50k miles. Stock plugs last about 40,000-50,000 miles, and less on tuned cars, per BimmerBench.

### Oil use and valve seals

Smoke at start-up or under hard acceleration and deceleration, plus oil-fouled plugs, points to oil consumption or worn valve stem seals. BMW's bulletin requires a full oil-consumption test before seals are replaced when high oil use is the only complaint.

### Turbo line leaks

Around 60K miles, the O-rings and rubber parts on the turbo oil return and coolant lines can start to leak, Bimmerly says.

### Sump leaks

The sump is a two-part upper and lower item, so a leak can be expensive to fix: many drive parts must come out first, PistonHeads warns.

### Battery condition

The X6 M has two batteries, and the turbo pump and cooling fans that run on after shutdown depend on them.

## What to check on a used F86 X6 M

Start under the engine cover and around the sump, then move to the batteries and the paperwork.

- Lift the small plastic plate on the engine cover and feel the left-hand hose for vibration, which shows the turbo coolant pump is running.
- Test both batteries, since the turbo pump and fans rely on them after shutdown.
- Start the car cold and listen for rattles or a rough idle, and watch the exhaust at start-up and under hard throttle for smoke that points to valve seals or oil use.
- Plug in a BMW-capable scanner to read stored fault codes rather than trusting the dash.
- Look for aftermarket intakes, downpipes and charge pipes, which indicate tuning, and ask for oil-change records.
- Inspect around the sump and the turbo lines for oil or coolant weeping.
- Run the VIN for open recalls and ask a BMW dealer about warranty extensions.
- Book an independent specialist inspection, since BimmerBench says cars can hide 20k worth of issues under the under-shields.

## F86 X6 M running costs

[BimmerBench's maintenance guide](https://bimmerbench.com/maintenance/f86/) says oil service is due when the CBS display asks for it, with about 10,000 miles or 12 months as BMW's example. On M models plugs fall due every third oil service and rear differential fluid every fifth, plus a 1,200-mile break-in service.

BimmerBench puts a differential fluid service at $176-$265 at an independent shop and $260-$450 at a dealer. Brake pads start at $257 per axle at a dealer, or $522 per axle for pads and rotors.

Budget as well for the engine items above: Bimmerly suggests replacing coils and plugs every 30k to 50k miles and rod bearings every 60K miles, and PistonHeads flags the sump as costly to reach. The [BMW X6 M price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/bmw/x6-m) shows fair values to set against any repair bill.

## F86 X6 M recalls and complaints

[NHTSA](https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) lists four recall campaigns for the 2015 to 2019 X6 M. 19V823 covers the rear seat lower anchor bars used for child seats on 2015 to 2019 cars. 18V614 covers wheel bolts that may not have been properly tightened on 2018 to 2019 cars.

The other two concern suspension bolts: 17V727 on 2018 cars for front suspension bolts that may not have been properly tightened, and 18V680 on 2019 cars for rear upper control arm pivot bolts that may have been improperly hardened and could break. A campaign for one model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. NHTSA holds no owner complaints for these model years.

## NHTSA recalls for the F86 X6 M

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2015 to 2019 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 19V823000 | Nov 18, 2019 | 2015 to 2019 | Child seat | Damaged lower anchor bars may increase the child's risk of injury in the event of a crash. |
| 18V680000 | Sep 28, 2018 | 2019 | Suspension | If a rear upper control arm breaks, it can affect vehicle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 18V614000 | Sep 12, 2018 | 2018 to 2019 | Wheels | The improperly tightened wheel bolts may loosen and break, affecting vehicle handling and control and increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 17V727000 | Nov 17, 2017 | 2018 | Suspension | Loose bolts can affect the performance of the suspension, thereby increasing the risk of a crash. |

## Our verdict

Aim for a 2015 to 2018 car, and make full oil-change records, an untuned engine and a proven coolant pump the conditions of the sale. Tuning shortens plug and coil life, so ask what was fitted and who did it.

Have an independent specialist look at the turbo pump, the sump and both batteries.
