## The fourth-generation Viper as a used buy

The fourth-generation Viper punishes a car with gaps in its history: some owners report overheating, and others have had the rear differential fail at around 40,000 miles.

The ZB II ran from 2008 to 2010 as a Coupe and a Convertible (the Roadster), with an 8.4-liter V10 making 600 hp and 560 lb-ft, and a manual gearbox only. There was no 2007 model. The 2006 car carried on through that year while the factory retooled for this heavily updated one. It suits a driver who wants a manual-only car with no electronic safety net and will take care in the wet.

Stability and traction control are absent, as [Exotic Car Hacks](https://www.exoticcarhacks.com/buyers-guides/dodge-viper-fourth-generation-buyers-guide/) and [The Cobra Magazine](https://cobramagazine.com/dodge-viper-fourth-generation-buyers-guide/) both note, and [Kelley Blue Book](https://www.kbb.com/dodge/viper/2008/) confirms there is no automatic option. [AutoTrader.ca](https://www.autotrader.ca/editorial/expert-reviews/dodge/viper/used-vehicle-review-dodge-viper-srt-10-2003-2010/) calls the powertrain primitive but says it has made a largely reliable car, with fussy doors and windows.

## fourth-generation Viper years and versions

The 2008 car got heads that flow better and carry larger valves. Mechadyne's cam-in-cam system varies the timing on the exhaust side, and a pair of electronic throttle bodies feeds the V10. The gearbox is a Tremec TR-6060 six-speed with improved synchronizers, backed by a limited-slip differential that senses speed. A twin-disc clutch cuts pedal effort, and the shifter throw is shorter. Outside, the hood gained a bigger scoop with working vents, and there are new front fenders.

Changes for 2009 were small, according to [Kelley Blue Book's 2009 page](https://www.kbb.com/dodge/viper/2009/): new paint colors and wheels, plus slight revisions to the frame, fuel tank and filler. AutoTrader.ca adds that an upgraded window regulator was available from 2009.

The special editions are small runs. 2009 brought the VOI-10 (100 units) and the Hurst 50th Anniversary (50 units). 2010 brought the Voodoo (10 units), the 1:33 (33 units) and the Final Edition cars, 20 coupes, 18 roadsters and 12 ACRs. [CarBuzz](https://carbuzz.com/features/the-dodge-viper-is-the-all-american-hero-you-need-to-buy/) names the ACR as the version to have for track use, with aggressive aero, racing tires and stiffer suspension.

For a road car, AutoTrader.ca advises a well-maintained example that is as close to stock as possible. If you are weighing generations, our [third-generation Viper guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/dodge/viper-gen-3) and [fifth-generation Viper guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/dodge/viper-gen-5) sit either side of this one.

## Common fourth-generation Viper problems

### Overheating

Some owners report it in high heat and sustained heavy-throttle driving, while many have had no trouble, says [Driving.ca](https://driving.ca/reviews/used-vehicle-guide/used-guide-1996-2010-dodge-viper). The cause can be as minor as an air bubble in the cooling system or as serious as a failing head gasket.

### Rear differential failure

Some owners have had the rear differential fail at around 40,000 miles. Ask what fluid is in it, since it wants specific gear oil and a friction modifier.

### Leaking power steering and oil lines

Power steering return hoses and oil cooler lines deteriorate and leak. Braided steel lines are the recommended upgrade.

### Degraded engine and gearbox mounts

Heat from the exhaust manifolds can wear out the engine and transmission mounts early. You feel it as vibration and shifting problems.

### Harmonic balancer bolt

Over time the bolt can loosen, which causes vibration and can damage the engine. Ask whether anyone has checked its torque.

### Windows and doors

Window regulators on cars of this era are weak, with failures reported by countless owners. Door hinges can sag, so the door rides low and lets water past the seals. If the window pre-drop computer loses its settings after a dead battery, the glass can smash onto the roof as the door closes.

### Cabin heat

Exhaust routing and minimal insulation can leave the cabin uncomfortably warm on long drives.

## What to check on a used fourth-generation Viper

- Have a Viper-trained technician in a dealer setting inspect the car, which Driving.ca advises and AutoTrader.ca says typically costs $200 or less.
- Check the cooling system for coolant condition, hoses, the water pump area, thermostat, fans and radiator, and look for oil and coolant cross-contamination.
- On the test drive the temperature needle should settle around mid-gauge, and the heater should blow plenty of hot air.
- Listen for scraping or grinding as the clutch is released, which can point to a worn throw-out bearing.
- Rear differential binding, whining or heavy clunks are bad signs, and the seller should say which gear oil and friction modifier it holds.
- Look under the car for leaks from the transmission, differential and engine, especially at the front timing cover.
- Make sure the car has not been crashed, and ask the seller directly about its history.
- Rocker panels and exhaust covers need a look for paint damage and rust, since they are expensive to replace.
- Work every window and door, watching for sag and water leaks at the seals.
- On a Convertible, inspect the top and its seals for wear and leaks, and look for leather that is dry and crispy.
- Ask for records of fluid changes in the differential and transmission, with proof that only factory-prescribed fluids went in.

## fourth-generation Viper running costs

AutoTrader.ca suggests assuming any car needs tires, brakes and a clutch, and is overdue for fluid changes until the records show otherwise. Some fluids need changing as often as every 20,000 kilometres, and only factory-prescribed fluids belong in the differential and transmission.

A dealer oil change runs $120 to $200 and four high-performance tires $1,500 to $2,500, according to Exotic Car Hacks. The Cobra Magazine gives the same figures, adding $1,500 to $2,000 for brake pads and rotors and $2,000 to $3,000 for a clutch, both at a dealership. Dodge's schedule calls for spark plugs every 30,000 miles and clutch hydraulic fluid every 12 months.

The car needs premium fuel, and Kelley Blue Book lists the EPA rating as 13/22/16 mpg city/highway/combined.

## fourth-generation Viper recalls and complaints

NHTSA's records show no recall campaigns for 2008 to 2010 Vipers as of October 31, 2026. One source lists airbag inflator recalls as applying to these years, so run any car's VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup before you buy.

Owners have filed 3 complaints with NHTSA, one each about the electrical system, engine and engine cooling, and suspension. Two involved crashes and one a fire. They are reports, not proven faults.

## Owner complaints to NHTSA about the fourth-generation Viper

Owners filed 3 complaints with NHTSA for the 2008 to 2010 model years (2 crashes and 1 fire reported). A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

| Component | Complaints |
| --- | --- |
| Electrical system | 1 |
| Engine and engine cooling | 1 |
| Suspension | 1 |

## Our verdict

Buy a 2008 to 2010 car whose owner can show differential and transmission fluid changes with the factory-prescribed products, and whose cooling system passes a specialist's inspection. CarBuzz calls third and fourth-generation Viper models performance bargains, and you can see what is listed in our [used Viper listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/dodge/viper) and the [Viper price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/dodge/viper). Our [used Dodge listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/dodge) and the [best used sports cars](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/best/used-sports-cars) list offer a wider view.

Skip a car with overheating the seller cannot trace to a cause, since the range runs from an air bubble to a failing head gasket, and skip one that whines or clunks at the rear. Choose the ACR only if you will use it on a track. The car has no stability control, so it asks a lot of its driver in the rain.
