Buying guide · 2022 on · Updated Oct 1, 2026

The 296 is young enough that the checks are about paperwork, hybrid-system records and one fuel-pipe recall, not worn engines, and the GTB and GTS differ little in character.

## The 296 as a used buy

The Ferrari 296 is a plug-in hybrid V6 mid-engined two-seater, and the first thing to check on a used one is its recall and hybrid-system paperwork. Ferrari revealed it on 24 June 2021, and sales began in 2022, with the F8 as its predecessor. No Ferrari road car had used six cylinders since the Dino.

The engine is a 2,992cc twin-turbo V6 making 654 hp, with an electric motor between engine and gearbox adding 165 hp. Combined output is 819 hp, sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic. The GTB is the coupé and the GTS has a retractable hardtop.

Because the car is so new, most of what matters is condition, specification and records. The hybrid system and its warranty cover are the unfamiliar part for anyone coming from an F8 or a [430](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/ferrari/f430), and our [SF90 comparison](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/compare/ferrari-sf90-stradale-vs-ferrari-296-gtb) shows the other Ferrari hybrid.

## 296 years and versions

The GTB came first. The GTS followed several months later, with a roof that takes 14 seconds to fold and works at speeds up to 45 km/h. [The Car Expert](https://www.thecarexpert.co.uk/ferrari-296-2022/) says the GTS driving experience is almost unchanged despite the lost roof. Ferrari's dry weights are 1,470 kg for the GTB and 1,540 kg for the GTS.

Assetto Fiorano is the track package: revised suspension, extra carbon-fiber bodywork and a polycarbonate rear screen. Ferrari quotes 1,458 kg dry for a GTB with it. [Car Collector International](https://www.carcollectorinternational.com/research/buyers-guides/ferrari/296) expects specification, the Assetto Fiorano pack and the Speciale derivatives to separate the most collectible cars over time, so confirm any pack against delivery documents.

From mid-2025 the touch-sensitive steering wheel controls can be swapped for conventional buttons. The 296 Speciale was revealed on 29 April 2025 with 868 bhp combined, and the Speciale A is its open version. Both are a separate, newer car from the GTB and GTS covered here.

Our listings show which cars carry the track pack.

## Common 296 problems

The record is short, which fits a car this young, but it includes two recalls and a few hybrid-related complaints from reviews.

### Fuel pipe corrosion

A recall covers certain 2022-2023 GTB and GTS cars. The aluminum fuel tank connecting pipe can corrode through contact with the high-voltage battery protective cover, which can cause a hole, a fuel leak and a fire risk. The fix replaces the pipe with a sleeved one, takes about two hours and is free.

### Turbo oil feed leak

A separate recall covers certain 2025 cars, where the nut securing the oil filter connection to the turbocharger oil feed pipes was tightened incorrectly and may leak oil. Check that the work has been done on any 2025 car.

### Hybrid software glitches

Automonitor lists early software glitches in the hybrid system among known issues. Ask for the software update record from a Ferrari dealer.

### Front tire wear

The same source says the aggressive factory alignment wears the front tires faster. Look at the inner edges of the fronts when you view the car.

### Fast battery drain

Some reviews reported the battery drains quickly, so the car runs mostly on gasoline power. That affects the electric range more than the driving, but ask how the car has been used and charged.

## What to check on a used 296

Paperwork and hybrid-system history matter more here than mileage.

- Confirm the chassis number, specification and options against dealer records and the delivery paperwork.
- Ask for the Ferrari digital service record and for any outstanding recalls, software campaigns and service campaigns.
- Ask whether the high-voltage battery has ever been replaced and whether a state-of-health report exists.
- Request the hybrid-system service history and the software update record through an authorized Ferrari dealer.
- Check that the fuel tank connecting pipe recall was carried out on 2022-2023 cars, and the oil feed recall on 2025 cars.
- Inspect the carbon-ceramic brake discs for glazing and uneven wear, and compare with the service book.
- Check the inner edges of the front tires for accelerated wear.
- Look for mismatched panel gaps and overspray in the engine bay and trunk.
- On a GTS, cycle the roof and check the other electronic systems and retractable elements.
- Match any Assetto Fiorano pack to the delivery documents.
- Book a pre-purchase inspection at an authorized Ferrari dealer.

## 296 running costs

[Automonitor](https://automonitor.io/blog/buy-a-ferrari-296-gtb/) puts an annual service at $3,000 to $5,500, and the major service due between 25,000 and 30,000 miles at $5,000 to $15,000. It quotes a full set of carbon-ceramic brakes at $12,000 to $20,000, lasting 50,000 to 80,000 miles. Pirelli P Zero tires run $400 to $600 each, and a pre-purchase inspection at a Ferrari dealer $500 to $1,200.

New Ferraris come with seven years of scheduled servicing, which passes to the next owner, according to [Kelley Blue Book](https://www.kbb.com/ferrari/296-gtb/2023/maintenance-schedules/) and The Car Expert. Factory warranty is three years in the US. Ferrari will replace the hybrid battery after eight years and again after 16, says [Unwildered](https://www.unwildered.co.uk/legal-blog/ferrari-296-hybrid-warranty-guide), but the year-eight replacement depends on the Warranty Extension Hybrid staying active and continuous. Ask whether it has lapsed.

The Car Expert says the 296 will inevitably be expensive to own and run, with limited trunk space. Compare current prices in our [296 GTB price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/ferrari/296-gtb) and [296 GTS price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/ferrari/296-gts), or see [how much a Ferrari costs](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/ferrari).

## 296 recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists two recall campaigns for the 296. One covers the fuel tank connecting pipe on certain 2022-2023 cars, which may corrode through contact with the high-voltage battery cover and leak fuel. The other covers certain 2025 GTB and GTS cars, where an incorrectly tightened nut on the turbo oil feed pipes may cause an oil leak.

Check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup, since a campaign for a model year does not mean every car of that year was affected. NHTSA holds no owner complaints for these model years as of 31 October 2026.

## NHTSA recalls for the 296

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2022 to 2027 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 25V716000 | Oct 21, 2025 | 2025 | Engine and engine cooling | An oil leak near a combustible source increases the risk of a fire. |
| 23V329000 | May 8, 2023 | 2022 | Fuel system, gasoline | A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire. |

## Our verdict

Buy the 296 on records, not mileage. A GTB or GTS with a clean service history, a documented hybrid-system software record and proof the relevant recall was done is the car to find. Pay for the Assetto Fiorano pack only if the delivery documents back it, as Car Collector International expects the pack to matter to collectors. Choose between coupé and GTS on whether you want the roof, since The Car Expert says the driving is almost unchanged.

Skip a car where the battery history is vague or the extended hybrid warranty has lapsed, as the battery replacement offers depend on it. Our [used 296 GTB listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/ferrari/296-gtb) and [used 296 GTS listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/ferrari/296-gts) are the place to start. Insist on a dealer inspection before you pay.

## 296: common questions

### What is the best 296 to buy?

Pick the GTB or GTS with the cleanest records, since the driving differs little. The Car Expert says the GTS experience is almost unchanged despite the lost roof. Assetto Fiorano cars may become more collectible, but confirm the pack against delivery documents.

### What goes wrong with the 296?

Known issues are a fuel tank pipe that can corrode on 2022-2023 cars, an oil leak recall on certain 2025 cars, early hybrid software glitches and faster front tire wear. Some reviews also reported the battery draining quickly.

### Is the 296 reliable?

Too early to say definitively, but the record so far is short. NHTSA lists two recalls and no owner complaints. Check recalls were done and ask for the hybrid software and battery records.

### How much does it cost to run a 296?

Automonitor quotes $3,000 to $5,500 for an annual service and $5,000 to $15,000 for a major service. Carbon-ceramic brakes are $12,000 to $20,000 and tires $400 to $600 each. New cars include seven years of scheduled servicing that passes to the next owner.

### How much is a used 296?

Asking prices for the 67 cars we track for sale right now run from $289,395 to $630,313, with a median of $370,120. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the 296 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 2 recall campaigns filed for the 2022 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for engine and engine cooling. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
