The 550 Maranello is a manual-only, front-engined V12 Ferrari, and the one to find is a regularly used car with proof of its fuel-line work and a specialist's sign-off.

## The 550 as a used buy

On a used Ferrari 550 Maranello, start with the fuel system: tanks leak, especially on 1997-'98 cars, and a recall covers the fuel pipe ferrule on cars built from January 1997 to August 1998. Ask what was done and who did it.

The 550 ran from 1997 to 2001 and put a front-engined V12 in place of the mid-engined Testarossa/512TR range, according to [Classic Trader](https://www.classic-trader.com/en/magazine/ferrari-550-maranello-buying-guide) and [Car Collector International](https://www.carcollectorinternational.com/research/buyers-guides/ferrari/550-maranello). A six-speed manual was the only gearbox. Most cars were coupes, and the Barchetta Pininfarina roadster arrived in 2000 for Pininfarina's 70th anniversary.

Very little changed until the updated 575M arrived in 2002, so you are choosing between cars on their wheels, their service records and which fixes they have had. Our [used 550 listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/ferrari/550) show what is for sale now, and the [550 market page](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/ferrari-550) covers each car on offer.

## 550 years and versions

The 550 Barchetta Pininfarina is the most collectible version, per [Targa](https://www.usetarga.app/models/12), with 448 built as open roadsters with a temporary cloth top. Its aerodynamics are less slippery than the coupe's 0.33Cd, so its top speed is 186mph, according to [PistonHeads](https://www.pistonheads.com/features/ph-buying-guides/ph-buying-guide-ferrari-550-maranello/26596).

The WSR cars were built after the 1998 speed records. Thirty-three were made, with the Fiorano handling pack, a roll cage, carbon-fibre bucket seats and a numbered plaque. [Octane Files](https://www.octanefiles.com/cars/ferrari-550-maranello) says authenticity must be verified with Ferrari documents, so don't take a seller's word for it.

The Fiorano pack lowers and stiffens the suspension by 10mm and adds a thicker anti-roll bar. The [Ferrari Owners Club](https://www.ferrariownersclub.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Ferrari-550_575-Buying-Guide.pdf) says most people don't need it on a 550, though collectors may see a car without it as lesser. Ferrari Classiche certification is a real plus but rarely seen on 550s, according to [Classic & Sports Car](https://www.classicandsportscar.com/features/buyers-guide-ferrari-550-maranello).

Against the later car, some owners find the 550 more engaging than the 575M, and the manual-only layout and handling make it the preferred choice of many enthusiasts. If you are weighing it against newer Ferraris, our [360 guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/ferrari/360) and [F430 guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/ferrari/f430) cover the next two generations.

## Common 550 problems

The serious items are mostly leaks, wheels and rotating parts, and several are covered by recalls.

### Fuel tank and line leaks

Fuel tanks leak, especially on 1997-'98 cars, and Targa agrees with Classic & Sports Car on that. A recall also covers a fuel pipe clamping ferrule that can leak on all 550s built between January 1997 and August 1998, so confirm the work was done.

### Cracking wheels

The original Speedline alloys were recalled for cracking and replaced with BBS wheels. Magnesium wheels fitted from 1997 to 1999 could crack at the bolt inserts, and Ferrari replaced those with hollow-spoke aluminium wheels.

### Camshaft oil seals

The camshaft seals weep oil, which can reach the timing belt if left alone. [Petrolicious](https://petrolicious.com/blogs/articles/ferrari-550-buying-guide-1) flags it too.

### Cracked radiator hoses

Hoses under the intake manifold are prone to cracking from heat, which causes coolant leaks in the engine vee.

### Crank pulley delamination

Engine vibration is probably a delaminating crank pulley. [R&D Automotive](https://rd-automotive.com/ferrari-550-maranello-buyers-guide/) names it as the likely cause.

### Gearbox and oil cooler

Early cars can be notchy or reluctant going into 1st, 3rd and 5th. Separately, a recall covers gearbox oil cooler pipes that may leak and leave the transaxle short of lubricant.

### Steering rack wear

Racks last about 30,000 miles, and play around the mid-point suggests a rebuild. A recall on 1997-1998 cars also covers steering stiffening from overheated power steering fluid.

### Sticky plastics and warning lights

Door handles and switches turn sticky, and fixes exist. Alarm or airbag lights that stay on may only mean a failed internal battery, which is cheap to fix.

## What to check on a used 550

Run through these yourself at a viewing, then pay a specialist for a proper inspection.

- Ask for the full service history and walk away from a car without one.
- Book a pre-purchase inspection with a Ferrari specialist.
- Check the camshaft covers and the engine top and rear for oil weeping, and look for coolant leaks in the engine vee.
- Look under the car for leaks from the power steering rack, the fuel tanks and the transmission oil cooler.
- Ask for paperwork showing the fuel pipe ferrule, wheel and gearbox cooler recall work was carried out.
- Find out whether the wheels are the original Speedlines, magnesium or later replacements.
- Press the clutch pedal and note whether it bites high up, and listen for a noisy release bearing.
- Listen for a metallic rattle over rough surfaces, which can mean failing upper A-arm bushes.
- Inspect the engine undertray and the oil drain plug for damage.
- Make sure the red controller fob comes with the two black alarm fobs, because a missing red one makes coding a new alarm expensive.
- Feel for play at the steering mid-point on the road.
- Look at the aluminium panels for corrosion, and on a Barchetta check the footwells for water.

## 550 running costs

Classic & Sports Car puts annual servicing at £2,500 to £3,000 (a UK figure) and suggests keeping up to £10,000 aside for unexpected bills. Classic Trader says cambelts and lambda sensors are due every 45,000 miles or three years.

[PistonHeads](https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-buying-guide-contents/ferrari-550-maranello-buying-guide-powertrain/26597) says a gearbox rebuild could cost £9,000. Clutch life is disputed: Classic & Sports Car says 40,000 to 50,000 miles unless abused, while another source says under 10,000 to 20,000. Classic & Sports Car expects 10,000 to 15,000 miles from a set of tires, and the correct Pirelli P Zero 225/40 and 295/35 ZR18 can be hard to find.

Fuel use is heavy, with PistonHeads giving an average of 11.6mpg. Our [price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/ferrari/550) shows what cars are listed at.

## 550 recalls and complaints

NHTSA holds six recall campaigns for 1997 to 2001 cars. The main ones cover fuel supply and return lines that can leak at the ferrule on 1997 to 1999 cars, magnesium wheel bolt inserts that can crack on 1997 to 1999 cars, and transmission oil lines that can leak and starve the gearbox of lubricant on 2001 cars. The others cover steering stiffening from overheated fluid (1997 to 1998), seat rails on 2001 Barchettas, and the handbrake ratchet on 2001 cars. A campaign for a model year doesn't mean every car was affected.

Owners have filed two complaints with NHTSA, one about air bags and one about the fuel or propulsion system. They are reports, not proven faults. Run the car's VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup to see which campaigns are still open.

## NHTSA recalls for the 550

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 1997 to 2001 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| 99V166000 | Jun 30, 1999 | 1997 to 1998 | Steering | THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE DECREASED STEERING ABILITY DURING PARKING PROCEDURES. |
| 98V268000 | Oct 23, 1998 | 1997 to 1999 | Fuel system, gasoline | FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE CAN RESULT IN FIRE. |

## Owner complaints to NHTSA about the 550

Owners filed 2 complaints with NHTSA for the 1997 to 2001 model years. A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

| Component | Complaints |
| --- | --- |
| Air bags | 1 |
| Fuel/propulsion system | 1 |

## Our verdict

Buy a regularly used car with a full specialist history. Classic Trader says high-mileage cars with good histories can be the most cost-effective way into ownership, and Classic & Sports Car and PistonHeads both prefer used cars to very low-mileage or idle ones. On a 1997-'98 car, insist on proof of the fuel line and tank work.

Skip any car with gaps in its service record, and any WSR claim that Ferrari documents don't back up. Then have a specialist look at the camshaft seals, cooling hoses and gearbox oil cooler before any money changes hands. If you are still comparing options, our [used Ferrari listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/ferrari) cover the wider range.

## 550: common questions

### What is the best 550 to buy?

A regularly used 550 with a full specialist service history is the one to buy. Classic Trader says high-mileage cars with good histories can be cost-effective, and the Barchetta is the most collectible version. Verify any WSR claim with Ferrari documents.

### What goes wrong with the 550?

Documented faults include fuel tank and line leaks, cracking wheels, camshaft seal weeps and cracked radiator hoses. Sources also list a delaminating crank pulley, a notchy gearbox on early cars and steering rack wear. Several of these are covered by recalls.

### Is the 550 reliable?

The sources we read give no single verdict on reliability, but they do document specific weak points: fuel leaks, wheels, cam seals, hoses and the steering rack. NHTSA lists six recall campaigns, and owners have filed two complaints. Classic & Sports Car says to keep up to £10,000 aside for unexpected bills.

### How much does it cost to run a 550?

Classic & Sports Car puts servicing at £2,500 to £3,000 a year (UK figures), plus up to £10,000 for surprises. PistonHeads says a gearbox rebuild could cost £9,000. Fuel use averages 11.6mpg, and tires last 10,000 to 15,000 miles.

### How much is a used 550?

Asking prices for the 14 cars we track for sale right now run from $270,411 to $700,411, with a median of $360,203. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the 550 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 6 recall campaigns filed for the 1997 to 2001 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for seats. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
