Buying guide · 2002 to 2006 · Updated Oct 1, 2026

The 575M is a front-engined V12 Ferrari that is best bought with the handling pack and a clean service history, and the F1 gearbox needs a careful look.

## The 575M as a used buy

The Ferrari 575M Maranello is the 2002 revision of the 550 Maranello, and the sources favor a car with a handling pack, since some felt the 575 was too soft. It ran to 2006, when the 599 GTB Fiorano replaced it. The M stands for Modificata.

The V12 grew from 5,474 cc to 5,748 cc, and the 575M was the first Ferrari V12 offered with an F1 automated manual gearbox. The 550 was manual only. Inside, there is a new dashboard with a large central rev counter, plus new seats and a new steering wheel. Outside the changes are subtle: color-coded headlights, a revised front intake and larger round exhausts.

The engine is tough, according to [PistonHeads](https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-buying-guides/ferrari-575m--ph-used-buying-guide/47172). What costs money is the gearbox history, the service record and whether the car has the right suspension and brake package. Buy on those, then look at the [575Ms for sale now](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/ferrari/575m).

## 575M years and versions

The standard 575M makes 515 metric horsepower, with its torque peak of 434 lb-ft arriving at 5,250 rpm. It also gained electronic throttle bodies and individual ignition coils, where the 550 had throttle cables and two sets of six coils. Eight out of ten 575s were ordered with the F1 gearbox, according to PistonHeads, so a manual is the rarer car. Sources disagree on total production: some say 2,056 cars, another 2,064. Most count 246 manuals. PistonHeads and the [Ferrari Owners Club](https://www.ferrariownersclub.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Ferrari-550_575-Buying-Guide.pdf) both note that manual cars carry a big premium, though the F1 may gain favor as younger buyers arrive.

Two handling packs matter. The Fiorano Handling Package has shorter, stiffer springs, a lower ride height, a thicker rear anti-roll bar, a new steering ECU and red calipers with uprated pads. The Ferrari Owners Club and PistonHeads see it as unnecessary on a 550 but worthwhile on a 575, which some felt was too soft. Red calipers were also a separate option, so they do not prove a car has the pack. Ask for the build paperwork.

The Handling GTC pack, announced in late 2004, goes further: carbon ceramic brakes, much stiffer springs and a stiffer anti-roll bar. It brought the first carbon brakes on a front-engined Ferrari, 398mm/360mm with six-pot front calipers, replacing 330mm/310mm iron discs. Ferrari claimed it cut lap times by 1.5sec on its test track. [RAC Drive](https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/car-reviews/ferrari/575m-maranello/575m-maranello-2002-2005/) calls the 575M a good but not great Ferrari, best with the GTC pack and the F1 gearshift, and says that without the GTC pack a low-mileage 550 is the more satisfying car. The Ferrari Owners Club agrees the 575M is not automatically better than the 550, as some owners find the earlier car more engaging.

The Superamerica arrived in 2005 as a drop-top with a Revocromico rotating electrochromic glass roof, according to [Fully Sorted](https://fullysorted.com/research/models/ferrari/575m-maranello). Its engine is rated at 540 metric horsepower, and 559 were built. More than nine in ten had the F1 gearbox. Its market is tracked on the [Superamerica page](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/ferrari-superamerica), and the standard car's on the [575M page](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/ferrari-575m).

## Common 575M problems

The sources describe an engine that rarely troubles owners; the faults to find are mostly in the ancillaries, the gearbox and the chassis.

### Cambelt and tensioner

Cambelts need replacing every five years regardless of mileage, or the tensioner bearing can seize. PistonHeads also says whirring from the front of the crankcase points to worn bearings between the crank pulley and timing gears, a £1,000 job including cambelts.

### F1 gearbox wear

Higher-mileage F1 cars often show major transmission work in their history, and clutch and sensor assemblies are often renewed together. RAC Drive says the gearbox can smell of hot clutch during low-speed maneuvers and clonk on poorly timed downshifts.

### Manual clutch behavior

On manual cars, the clutch and release bearings can get grumpy, especially if the car is rarely used. A low-mileage example that has sat is not automatically a safe one.

### Suspension bushes and springs

Bushes, especially the upper wishbone ones, tire and clonk over bumps. A broken spring makes one corner sit low.

### Misfires from HT leads

The engine is very tough, says PistonHeads, but a misfire could be down to dying HT leads. Fix those before assuming something worse.

### Minor electrics and weeps

Exchange and Mart and RAC Drive report minor electrical problems, including spurious warning lights, and the cam cover may weep.

## What to check on a used 575M

Pay for a specialist inspection, and take this list with you as well.

- Ask for a full service history from a recognized specialist, and check that the chassis number in the service book matches the car.
- Book a Ferrari specialist inspection before you buy, as the Ferrari Owners Club advises.
- Check the cambelt date, since the interval is five years regardless of mileage.
- Check that the 18,750 miles or 3 year service has been done.
- Listen with the engine warm for a loud metallic tap at the top of the engine, which means the tappets need adjusting.
- Listen at the front of the crankcase for whirring that suggests worn bearings.
- Ask for the gearbox history on an F1 car, including any clutch and sensor assembly renewals.
- Drive over bumps listening for clonks from the suspension bushes, and look for a corner sitting low.
- Check the inner edges of the tires, where wear is easy to miss.
- Ask for proof of the Fiorano or GTC pack, since red calipers alone prove nothing.
- On a Superamerica, check the roof's five tint levels and its full rotation.

## 575M running costs

[Exchange and Mart](https://www.exchangeandmart.co.uk/reviews/ferrari/575m-maranello/2002/207779) and RAC Drive give a £2000 figure for tappet adjustment. RAC Drive prices parts at £270 for front brake pads, £270 for a clutch assembly plus £80 extra, around £170 for a starter motor and nearly £5,000 for a new exhaust. These are UK figures. PistonHeads puts the cambelt and bearing job at £1,000.

The Fiorano pack cost £2,215 in the UK when new and the GTC pack over £15,000, which is worth knowing if you find carbon brakes that need replacing. For what to expect to pay for the car itself, see [how much a Ferrari costs](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/ferrari).

## 575M recalls and complaints

NHTSA holds no recall campaigns for 2002 to 2006 575Ms and no owner complaints, as of October 31, 2026. Still, check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before you buy.

## Our verdict

Find a 575M with the Fiorano or GTC handling pack, the F1 gearbox with a documented transmission history, and a full specialist service record with a recent cambelt change. If you want the manual, expect to compete for a rare car. Skip any example without paperwork for its suspension and brake package.

If the pack is missing and the price is the same, a low-mileage 550 may suit you better. On a Superamerica, run the roof through all five tint levels before you sign anything. Browse [used Ferraris for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/ferrari) to compare.

Mostly, as far as the sources go, since PistonHeads describes the engine as very tough. NHTSA holds no recalls or complaints for these years. The risks are age-related: overdue cambelts, worn F1 clutches and suspension bushes.

### How much does it cost to run a 575M?

Specialists put the cambelt and bearing job at £1,000 and tappet adjustment at £2000, both UK figures. RAC Drive lists front brake pads at £270, a clutch assembly at £270 plus £80 extra and a new exhaust at nearly £5,000. Budget for a service at 18,750 miles or three years.
