Buying guide · 2013 to 2017 · Updated Oct 1, 2026

Widely seen as the last naturally aspirated Ferrari V12 berlinetta, the F12 is a used buy decided by the brake cap recall, a gearbox worth inspecting and the paperwork.

## The F12 as a used buy

A used Ferrari F12berlinetta is bought on specification and paperwork more than on year, because the 2013 to 2017 cars changed little mechanically. The limited F12tdf is the exception.

It replaced the 599 GTB. Its 6,262cc V12 makes 730 bhp and drives the rear wheels through a 7-speed twin-clutch gearbox, in an aluminum two-seater styled by Pininfarina. In the view of [Carcollectorinternational](https://www.carcollectorinternational.com/research/buyers-guides/ferrari/f12), it is the last naturally aspirated V12 berlinetta Ferrari built before the 812 Superfast. About 4,500 standard cars were made.

[Carbuyer](https://www.carbuyer.co.uk/ferrari/f12-berlinetta) lists a 350-litre boot, growing to 500 litres with the rear divider removed, and over 370 miles from the 90-litre tank. On dependability, [Exoticcarhacks](https://www.exoticcarhacks.com/buyers-guides/ferrari-f12-buyers-guide/) and [Motorbiscuit](https://www.motorbiscuit.com/3-ferrari-f12-common-problems-reported-real-owners/) rate it among the most dependable V12 grand tourers while still insisting on a pre-purchase inspection, and Carbuyer found few things to go wrong.

## F12 years and versions

The standard berlinetta barely changed. Exoticcarhacks says 2013 and 2014 cars had no significant mechanical changes, the Tailor Made personalization program arrived in 2014, and 2016 brought mostly options, interior trim and infotainment updates. So on an ordinary car the options decide it. [Octane Files](https://www.octanefiles.com/cars/ferrari-f12berlinetta) points to the suspension lifter, carbon trim and a heritage colour as what separates a well-specified car from a bare one. The lifter earns its keep every day, because the long, low nose meets each ramp first. Carbon-ceramic brakes were standard, so you will not find one with iron discs.

The F12tdf is the version Octane Files ranks first. Only 799 were built from 2015 to 2017. It makes 780PS at 8,500rpm and weighs 110kg less than the berlinetta. It has wider front tires, and its gearchanges are 30 percent faster on the way up and 40 percent faster on the way down. Virtual Short Wheelbase rear-wheel steering debuted on it. It lapped Fiorano two seconds faster than the standard car, and Exoticcarhacks quotes 769 hp against 730 hp.

The 70th Anniversary cars of 2017 come next in Octane Files' order. Only 70 were made, they mark the end of F12 production, and each wears one of seventy heritage liveries. Carcollectorinternational's advice cuts across all of this: take the best-documented car in the most desirable specification over a tired example of a rarer derivative. You can browse [every berlinetta for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/ferrari-f12berlinetta) or [every tdf for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/ferrari-f12tdf) to compare specifications.

## Common F12 problems

### Brake cap recall

The reservoir cap can fail to vent, which builds a vacuum, lets brake fluid leak out and can cost you some or all of your braking. The recall covers berlinettas and tdfs built 2013 to 2017; the remedy is a new cap and a software update that adds a low-fluid warning.

### Airbag recalls

Three airbag problems are on record: a Takata passenger inflator, an airbag ECU on 2015 to 2017 cars, and a driver's airbag module fitted rotated on berlinettas built December 2014 to April 2015. Each needs confirming for the car in front of you.

### Gearbox seals and sensor

Oil can seep from the 7DCL750 dual-clutch gearbox seals, and a failing speed sensor gives rough shifts at low speed and on downshifts. [Kicktyres](https://kicktyres.com/inspections/ferrari/f12), a New Zealand site, puts gearbox faults at $1,500 to $9,000 to put right.

### Starter motor trouble

Some F12s have starter motor problems, showing up as difficulty restarting after a drive and electrical warnings.

### Paint corrosion

Paint can peel or corrode around the rear mesh and the rear wing vents, and Octane Files tells buyers to check the vents closely.

### Leather shrinkage and creaks

Leather on the dashboard and rear sunscreen can shrink and crack. Creaking from the torque bolts in the rear driveshaft has also been reported.

## What to check on a used F12

- Confirm the brake reservoir cap recall was done, and have the recall history checked against the chassis number, especially on an imported car.
- Get underneath and look for any weep from the gearbox oil seals.
- Listen for rough shifts at parking speeds and on downshifts, which is how a failing speed sensor shows itself.
- Start the car cold, then again after a drive, and watch for slow restarts or electrical warnings that point to the starter.
- Inspect the paint around the rear wing vents and rear mesh for bubbling, the first sign of corrosion there.
- Run a paint-depth gauge over every panel to find refinished areas and accident repairs.
- Read the service book for gaps in the Ferrari dealer history and proof that Ferrari Genuine Maintenance was used.
- Have each of the three airbag campaigns confirmed separately, since they cover different build dates and years.
- Examine the dashboard and rear sunscreen leather for shrinkage and cracks.
- Specify ECU diagnostics, compression testing and underbody photos in the pre-purchase inspection, and add a long road test.

## F12 running costs

The gearbox is the big variable. A replacement speed sensor runs about $1,000 according to Motorbiscuit, while a full 7DCL750 replacement costs tens of thousands of dollars. Kicktyres' New Zealand figure of $1,500 to $9,000 covers gearbox faults generally.

Every new F12 came with seven years of scheduled servicing, which sets the standard for the dealer history you should expect to find in the book. ## F12 recalls and complaints

NHTSA holds five recall campaigns for 2013 to 2017 F12s. One covers the brake fluid reservoir cap (2013 to 2017, berlinetta and tdf), filed under hydraulic service brakes. The other four are airbag campaigns: 2013 cars sold or registered in certain states, 2015 berlinettas built between December 2014 and April 2015, 2015 to 2017 cars, and 2014 to 2017 cars including the tdf.

Because one campaign is tied to a build window and another to states, a given F12 can fall under some of the five and not others. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup to see which apply, then ask for proof of each repair. NHTSA holds no owner complaints for these model years.

## NHTSA recalls for the F12

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2013 to 2017 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 22V536000 | Jul 26, 2022 | 2013 to 2017 | Service brakes, hydraulic | A loss of brake function can increase the risk of a crash. |
| 19V411000 | Jun 4, 2019 | 2015 to 2017 | Air bags | In the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners that do not deploy as intended can increase the risk of injury. |
| 19V006000 | Jan 9, 2019 | 2014 to 2017 | Air bags | An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death. |
| 18V040000 | Jan 9, 2018 | 2013 | Air bags | An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death. |
| 15V433000 | Jul 7, 2015 | 2015 | Air bags | In the event of a crash, the deployment of the driver's air bag in a rotated orientation increases the risk of injury. |

## Our verdict

Buy the F12tdf if you can find one, with the 70th Anniversary cars next, as Octane Files ranks them. For a standard berlinetta, pick the car with the best paper trail and the suspension lifter fitted, and filter the [used F12berlinetta for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/ferrari/f12berlinetta) accordingly.

Insist on a completed brake cap recall, a full Ferrari dealer or Genuine Maintenance history, and a road test long enough to expose any rough low-speed shifting. Then look under the gearbox: a weep at the seals needs a repair quote before you agree a price.

## F12: common questions

### What is the best F12 to buy?

The F12tdf is the version Octane Files rates most highly, followed by the 70th Anniversary cars of 2017. Among standard berlinettas, buy the best-documented car with the options you want, especially the front suspension lifter.

### What goes wrong with the F12?

The brake fluid reservoir cap recall is the most serious item, alongside several airbag recalls. Gearbox oil seal leaks and speed sensor failures are reported too, as are starter problems, peeling paint around the rear vents and cracking leather.

### Is the F12 reliable?

Yes, by V12 grand tourer standards. Exoticcarhacks and Motorbiscuit rate it among the most dependable, and Carbuyer says its dual-clutch gearbox has proved sturdy. A pre-purchase inspection is still essential, and the five NHTSA recalls need checking.

### How much does it cost to run an F12?

Gearbox work is the main bill. Kicktyres, a New Zealand site, puts gearbox faults at $1,500 to $9,000, and Motorbiscuit says a speed sensor is about $1,000 while a replacement gearbox costs tens of thousands of dollars. New cars came with seven years of scheduled servicing.

### How much is a used F12?

Asking prices for the 45 cars we track for sale right now run from $300,020 to $4,001,293, with a median of $529,948. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the F12 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 5 recall campaigns filed for the 2013 to 2017 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for service brakes, hydraulic. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
