The F8 is the last non-hybrid mid-engined V8 Ferrari, and a used one comes down to the brake-cap recall, the service history and, on a Spider, a roof that works.

## The F8 as a used buy

On a 2020-2022 Ferrari F8, find out whether the brake fluid reservoir cap was replaced. Those Tributos and Spiders were recalled over a cap that can lead to loss of braking, and 2023 cars fall outside that campaign.

The Tributo was unveiled at the 2019 Geneva show as the successor to the 488 GTB, and the Spider with its retractable hardtop followed in September 2019. Both use a 3,902cc twin-turbo V8 derived from the 488 Pista, rated at 710 hp, with power going to the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The F8 is the last non-hybrid mid-engined V8 Ferrari berlinetta, ahead of the plug-in hybrid 296 GTB.

## F8 years and versions

The model years run 2020 to 2023, with few mid-run changes. The 2021 model year had no significant updates. From March 2022, Apple CarPlay became standard and ADAS with back radar was added across the range. Ferrari also stopped taking orders for both body styles that month, according to [Marque](https://marquecars.com/journal/ferrari-f8-used).

Production was uneven at the end. A Ferrari spokesperson told Marque that one Tributo was built for the 2023 model year, while Spider production carried on past the coupé, so a 2023 car is almost certainly a Spider. The Spider weighs about 70 kg more than the coupé, and its hardtop takes 14 seconds to open or close. [Cartimeline.com](https://cartimeline.com/ferrari-f8-spider-f142mfl-710hp-specs/) lists carbon-ceramic brakes as standard on the Spider, and says a coherent, tasteful specification usually beats an expensive but mismatched build. Original paint, interior, wheels and carbon trim are preferred, while extreme tuning, aftermarket exhausts and lowering can narrow the buyer pool.

[Octane Files](https://www.octanefiles.com/cars/ferrari-f8) singles out the raised front axle (40mm) and the surround-view camera as options worth finding, and advises against paying again for carbon trim that was costly when new. Genuine Maintenance coverage lasts seven years, so it runs out a year sooner on a 2020 car than on a 2021 car. ## Common F8 problems

### Brake fluid cap recall

On 2020-2022 Tributos and Spiders the reservoir cap can fail to vent, building a vacuum that may leak brake fluid and leave the car with partial or complete loss of braking. The remedy is a new cap, plus on some cars an instrument panel software update that changes the low-brake-fluid warning, at no cost to the owner.

### Driveshaft bolt recall

Some 2023 F8 Spiders were recalled over driveshaft bolts. NHTSA's summary says the screws may not have been tightened during production and could loosen.

### Turbocharger failures

Some cars have lost a turbo even at relatively low mileage, according to Exotic Car Hacks. A low odometer reading is no reassurance, so ask to see the dealer service record and a current Ferrari diagnostic report.

### Flat battery

A car that is not kept on a trickle charger can drain its battery, leading to hard starting and dashboard error messages.

### Engine control warnings

Owners report an Engine Control System Failure message that drops the car into limp mode, often traced to sensors or wiring.

### Panel corrosion

Bubbling under the paint on aluminum panels such as the bonnet points to corrosion underneath. Reports of it exist, so look along the edges and curves of each panel in daylight.

## What to check on a used F8

- Ask for a complete dealer service record, and favor a car that had an annual oil change whatever the computer prompted.
- Check that the brake fluid reservoir cap recall was carried out, by giving the chassis number to a Ferrari dealer or specialist.
- Run a Spider's roof through a full open and close cycle, and watch for hesitation or noise.
- Inspect the Spider's roof seals, drains, latching and trim alignment for signs of water entry.
- Test the battery on any car that has been sitting, and ask whether it lived on a trickle charger.
- Request a current authorized Ferrari diagnostic report showing clutch wear percentage, gearbox control unit fault history and carbon-ceramic disc condition.
- Have a specialist measure carbon-ceramic rotor wear, surface condition, pad life and heat damage, since the eye alone cannot judge them.
- Look over the bonnet and other aluminum panels for bubbling under the paint.
- Verify the window sticker or build sheet, options and warranty status, including whether Genuine Maintenance and Power15 cover remain.
- Book a pre-purchase inspection with an authorized dealer or experienced mechanic.

## F8 running costs

Ferrari's seven-year Genuine Maintenance programme passes to the next owner, so a young car may still have servicing covered. The original warranty ran three years, and Octane Files says the transferable Power15 programme can cover the engine, gearbox and major components after that.

Exotic Car Hacks gives $500 to $800 for a dealer oil change and $300 to $500 at an independent. A dealer major service is $5,000 to $7,500, or $3,500 to $5,000 at an independent.

The same source quotes $6,000 to $10,000 for carbon-ceramic pads and rotors at all four corners at a dealer. A clutch replacement runs $7,000 to $10,000 at a dealer or $5,000 to $8,000 at an independent.

## F8 recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 2 recall campaigns for the F8. One covers 2020-2022 Tributos and Spiders over the hydraulic brake system, which is the reservoir cap issue. The other covers 2023 F8 Spiders over driveshaft screws that may not have been tightened in production. A recall for a model year doesn't mean every car of that year was affected, so enter the car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

As of October 31, 2026, NHTSA holds no owner complaints for these model years.

Buy a car with a full service record, then check how much Genuine Maintenance and Power15 cover is left, since both transfer to you. A 2021 car keeps its Genuine Maintenance a year longer than a 2020 car. Pick a Spider only if the roof cycles cleanly and the cabin is dry, and if it is a 2023, confirm the driveshaft recall. The best F8 is a well-documented car in original specification, with the brake cap recall done if it is a 2020-2022 car. Cartimeline.com says original paint, interior and wheels are preferred, and Octane Files recommends the front axle lift and surround-view camera. Choose the Spider only if you want the open roof and are ready to check it carefully.

### What goes wrong with the F8?

The main issues are two recalls, plus owner reports of turbo failures, battery drain, limp-mode warnings and aluminum panel corrosion.
