Buying guide · 2012 to 2016 · Updated Oct 1, 2026

The Ferrari FF is a four-seat, four-wheel-drive V12 that owners used hard, so a good used one comes with full service records and proof of what has been done to its front-drive unit.

## The FF as a used buy

A used Ferrari FF stands or falls on its front-drive power transfer unit, so ask for proof it has been rebuilt or checked before you discuss anything else. Ferrari built the FF from 2011 to 2016 and sold 2291 of them; we cover the 2012 to 2016 model years.

It was the first Ferrari with four-wheel drive and the first able to carry four full-sized adults and their luggage, in a shooting-brake body with 450 litres of boot space (800 with the rear seats folded). A 6.3-litre V12 making 651 hp drives through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and the car is rear-driven most of the time. The 4RM system adds a two-speed gearbox at the front of the engine with two slipping clutches.

Ferrari's long options list means two FFs of the same year can be very different cars, and the paperwork matters as much as the badge. You can see what is on offer now in [used FF listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/ferrari/ff), or study [every FF for sale and its market](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/ferrari-ff).

## FF years and versions

The FF has one engine, one gearbox and one body for the whole run, with no factory derivative. Mechanical differences between model years are minimal, and [CarsCounsel](https://carscounsel.com/ferrari-ff-best-worst-years/) says no year is strictly bad. It suggests 2014 to 2016, with 2015 and 2016 the most refined, and advises care with 2012 cars because of first-year production risks and recalls.

Apple CarPlay arrived as an option in 2015, so a later car may have it and an earlier one will not. Optional equipment from new included an LCD display on the passenger side and TV screens in the rear headrests.

Specification counts for more than mileage, since the options list also took in a glass roof, carbon trim and forged wheels. FFs were bought to be used, so high mileage is normal, and [Octane Files](https://www.octanefiles.com/cars/ferrari-ff) rates a documented, regularly driven car above a low-mileage one that has sat. Check what a car was ordered with and whether the screens, roof and wheels are in good order.

## Common FF problems

The power transfer unit comes first below because it is the best-documented weak point.

### Power transfer unit failure

Fluid gets into the PTU, typically past a faulty crankcase seal, and the unit fails. [KickTyres](https://kicktyres.com/inspections/ferrari/ff) says one sign is a '4WD failure' message with the manettino stuck in Wet. A recall covered around 2,650 PTUs because spline wear could disconnect the front drive and lose Park.

### Dual-clutch gearbox faults

On early cars the dual-clutch box might stumble at low speed, take a moment to pick up first gear after reversing, and fight the shift from sixth into seventh. Most of these cars have since been sorted. Autocar's reliability page adds that the gearbox can leak and develop sensor faults, and either may mean a rebuild or replacement.

### Carbon-ceramic disc bolts

On carbon-ceramic Ferraris built after 2009, bolts that rust have been a genuine headache. Replacement discs are dear, so the bolts and the wear records deserve attention.

### Lithium battery damage

A lithium battery left idle can be damaged for good, and a replacement is expensive. A trickle charger is the advice for any FF that sits for long periods.

### Brake fluid cap recall

One recall concerns a brake fluid reservoir cap that fails to vent. The result can be a leak and a loss of braking.

### Radiator and oil pan leaks

Past about 100,000 miles the plastic radiator tank tends to start weeping, and the oil pan may drip as well, according to [Autocar](https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/ferrari/ff-2011-2016/reliability).

### Switch and sensor glitches

[Exotic Car Hacks](https://www.exoticcarhacks.com/buyers-guides/ferrari-ff-buyers-guide/) calls manettino switch failure and tire pressure sensor errors common. The plastic coating on interior buttons and switches can also turn sticky.

### Uneven brake wear

Because of the traction control system, the rear brakes can wear faster than the fronts.

## What to check on a used FF

A pre-purchase inspection by a Ferrari dealer or specialist is strongly advised, and these are the points to put to whoever does it.

- Ask for evidence that the PTU has been rebuilt or checked, and look for oil seepage at the nose of the engine, around the joint between PTU and block.
- Run the manettino through every position and read each message on the dash, since a 4WD warning can point to the PTU.
- Drive it in both manual and automatic modes, noting any hesitation at low speed, a slow first gear after reverse and reluctance on the sixth to seventh shift.
- Examine the carbon-ceramic disc bolts for flaking rust and ask for disc wear measurements.
- Check beneath the radiator and oil pan for weeps, especially on a car with high mileage.
- Press every interior button and switch, and feel for tackiness in the coating.
- Ask for a dealer stamp for each year of Ferrari's seven-year maintenance programme.
- Confirm that the lithium battery holds its charge, and ask how the car was kept between drives.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and ask for proof that any open campaign has been closed.

## FF running costs

Octane Files quotes in pounds, putting a PTU rebuild at around £8,000 and a new Ferrari unit at about £30,000. Autocar's reliability page gives about £30k for a replacement and about £10,000 for a specialist repair and upgrade.

Octane Files reckons a gearbox rebuild at around £5,000, and replacement carbon-ceramic discs through a dealer at £20,000 or more. [Giallo Modena](https://www.giallomodena.com/post/the-ultimate-ferrari-ff-buyer-s-guide) says magnetic damper replacement can cost £4,000 per corner, and advises oil changes every 7,000 miles or annually. For wider context on ownership, see [how much a Ferrari costs](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/ferrari).

## FF recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 5 recall campaigns for the FF across 2012 to 2016. Four are for air bags, filed separately for 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2014 to 2016 cars, and Takata passenger inflator recalls apply to FFs. The fifth covers the hydraulic service brakes on 2012 to 2016 cars.

NHTSA holds no owner complaints for these years. A campaign filed for a model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before you buy.

## NHTSA recalls for the FF

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2012 to 2016 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 22V536000 | Jul 26, 2022 | 2012 to 2016 | Service brakes, hydraulic | A loss of brake function can increase the risk of a crash. |
| 19V006000 | Jan 9, 2019 | 2014 to 2016 | Air bags | An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death. |
| 18V381000 | Jun 7, 2018 | 2012 | Air bags | An inflator explosion may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death. |
| 18V040000 | Jan 9, 2018 | 2013 | Air bags | An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death. |
| 15V433000 | Jul 7, 2015 | 2015 | Air bags | In the event of a crash, the deployment of the driver's air bag in a rotated orientation increases the risk of injury. |

## Our verdict

Buy on paperwork, not on year or odometer. An FF with PTU evidence, a stamped seven-year maintenance record and a documented history of regular use is a better bet than a quiet, low-mileage car with gaps. Among the years, 2014 to 2016 is where CarsCounsel points, and the [Ferrari FF price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/ferrari/ff) shows how the market treats each one.

Walk away from a car showing a 4WD failure message or oil at the front of the engine until the fault is diagnosed and quoted, and have a Ferrari dealer or specialist inspect any car you are serious about. What Car Should I Buy? calls the FF practical and all-weather but costly to maintain, and the PTU is where that cost shows up first.

## FF: common questions

### What is the best FF to buy?

Aim for a 2014 to 2016 FF, with 2015 and 2016 the most refined according to CarsCounsel. Treat 2012 cars with extra care because of first-year production risks and recalls, and weigh service history above the model year.

### What goes wrong with the FF?

The power transfer unit is the best-documented weak point, usually failing after fluid gets in through a faulty crankcase seal. Early dual-clutch gearboxes could hesitate, and rusting carbon-ceramic disc bolts, a lithium battery left idle and a leaking radiator tank are also reported.

### Is the FF reliable?

The sources give no single reliability verdict. They describe the FF as a practical all-weather V12 with significant running and maintenance costs, and say service history and a proper inspection matter more than model year.

### How much does it cost to run an FF?

Repairs cost far more than routine servicing. Octane Files gives about £8,000 for a PTU rebuild, about £30,000 for a new unit and around £5,000 for a gearbox rebuild. Giallo Modena advises oil changes every 7,000 miles or annually.

### How much is a used FF?

Asking prices for the 13 cars we track for sale right now run from $144,515 to $269,799, with a median of $189,900. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the FF been recalled?

NHTSA lists 5 recall campaigns filed for the 2012 to 2016 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for service brakes, hydraulic. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
