The second-generation Ford GT splits into early 647 hp cars with cooling worries and a recall history, and 2020-on cars with 660 hp and fixes, so paperwork matters most.

## The second-generation Ford GT as a used buy

The second-generation Ford GT is a Multimatic-built supercar with a carbon-fiber tub and a twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, built from December 2016 through 2022. Before you look at a car, decide whether you want an early 647 hp example or a 2020-on 660 hp one, because [Octane Files](https://www.octanefiles.com/cars/ford-gt-2nd-gen) treats them as different specifications.

Production was first capped at 500 cars and later expanded to 1,350. The same source says 6,506 people applied for the first 500. Ford vetted buyers and imposed a 24-month no-resale agreement, which [Car Collector International](https://www.carcollectorinternational.com/research/buyers-guides/ford/ford-gt-2017-2022) says shaped the secondary market and each car's provenance. Ask for the history of both the application and the delivery.

The two issues that matter most are the 2017 and 2018 rear wing recall and thermal management on early cars. Both are covered below. You can browse [used Ford GT listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/ford/gt) to see what is on offer now, or check [every Ford GT for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/ford-gt-gen-ii) and its market.

## second-generation Ford GT years and versions

Power is 647 hp in 2017 to 2019 cars, with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, per Car Collector International. From 2020 it is 660 hp, with revised cooling, a stiffer track mode and an Akrapovič titanium exhaust. Octane Files adds gallery-cooled pistons, higher-energy ignition coils, larger intercoolers and new buttress ducts that move about fifty percent more air. Torque on the later engine is 550 lb-ft, according to [Model Year Matters](https://modelyearmatters.com/ford/gt/).

[CarsCounsel](https://carscounsel.com/ford-gt-best-worst-years/) calls 2020 to 2022 the best late-generation choice, thanks to the extra power and improved cooling, and says 2017 to 2019 cars deserve careful handling because of early thermal management concerns. It rates 2017 the most challenging year, with teething issues and track cooling limits. Octane Files says earlier cars are not lesser, only a different specification, and the 660 hp cars carry a premium. The market treats that split differently, and our price guide shows how.

The special editions complicate things. Octane Files lists a Heritage edition for each year, in small runs: 27 cars in 2017 (styled as '66), 39 in 2018 ('67), 50 in 2019 (Gulf-liveried '68), 50 in 2020 ('69) and 50 in 2021 ('66 Daytona). For 2022 there was a '64 Heritage, a Holman Moody edition and an Alan Mann edition capped at 30. The LM Edition, the final twenty cars built in 2022, tops the range.

For drivers, Octane Files picks the Carbon Series: around 50 cars in 2019 with carbon wheels and titanium lug nuts and exhaust, roughly 40lb lighter. The Competition Series lost roughly 140lb, and fewer than 15 were made in 2017 and 2018. Track-only Mk II (45 cars) and Mk IV (67) models are a separate matter.

## Common second-generation Ford GT problems

The record is short, but it contains a fire risk and a cooling issue on early cars.

### Rear wing valve block leak

Pressure in the rear wing hydraulic valve block can push fluid onto the exhaust on 2017 and 2018 cars built from 20 December 2016 to 31 July 2018, 176 in the US. Octane Files reports one car burned in Germany, and a leak near an ignition source can cause a fire. The fix is FIVC software revision R201 or later, plus a check valve, filter and hydraulic pump o-rings where needed.

### Incomplete recall repairs

A second recall covers two 2017 US-spec cars that did not get the correct software update the first time, according to [Astro Ford](https://www.astroford.com/recalls/ford-gt-recalls.htm). A car with a recall stamp can still need proof the right work was done.

### Overheating on track

CarsCounsel says early 2017 to 2019 cars can overheat in sustained track sessions, because the intercoolers and oil coolers struggle with the twin-turbo V6's thermal loads. If you plan track days, this is the weak point of the early cars.

### Early engine failures

Some owners reported engine failures on early cars that needed replacement under warranty, CarsCounsel says. Ford replaced several engines and added cooling updates, so an early car's service history should say which engine it has.

### Electrics and active aero

CarsCounsel warns of electrical gremlins, and the complex active aerodynamic systems need specialized diagnostic equipment. Diagnosis is not a job for a general garage.

## What to check on a used second-generation Ford GT

Paperwork and a specialist inspection count for more here than the usual walk-round.

- Verify the original application status, delivery paperwork and any no-resale-clause history against Ford's records.
- Confirm the exact model year and any special-edition specification against the delivery documents.
- Check the recall history for the rear wing valve block recall, and ask for proof the correct software and parts were fitted.
- Demand service records that show if an early car's engine was swapped or received the newest cooling-related parts.
- Ask whether any structural carbon repair was done to Ford specification, since [OwningSupercars](https://owningsupercars.com/article/1873d48e-61ff-4a49-8405-33e787240247) says other repairs make it a different car.
- Test the rear wing hydraulics and active suspension fully during the inspection, because they are calibrated as a system.
- Inspect the carbon bodywork for structural cracks or misaligned panels.
- Scan the car for diagnostic codes before you agree to buy.
- Book a pre-purchase inspection from an outside specialist who is a certified Ford GT technician.

## second-generation Ford GT running costs

The sources give few figures. Octane Files calls the tires a serious running cost. OwningSupercars says Ford states the service intervals and oil specifications, and the work requires Ford Performance certification, so budget for dealer or certified-technician labor rather than a local shop.

No source we read gives a repair bill for the engine, the rear wing system or the carbon structure. Get quotes from a certified technician before you buy, particularly on an early car with an unknown engine history.

## second-generation Ford GT recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists two recall campaigns for the 2017 to 2022 GT, both filed under Structure. Campaign 18V707000 covers certain 2017 to 2018 cars, where the rear wing valve block may leak hydraulic fluid. Campaign 25V443000 covers certain 2017 cars previously repaired incorrectly under that recall, for the same leak. A campaign for a model year does not mean every car was affected, so check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

As of October 31, 2026, owners have filed no complaints with NHTSA for these model years.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 25V443000 | Jun 27, 2025 | 2017 | Structure | A hydraulic fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire. |
| 18V707000 | Oct 9, 2018 | 2017 to 2018 | Structure | A hydraulic fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire. |

## Our verdict

Look for a 2020 to 2022 car if you can. CarsCounsel rates them the best late-generation choice with 660 hp and better cooling, though it says long-term ownership data is limited because so few were built. Choose a 2017 to 2019 car only with proof of the recall work and of the latest thermal management parts, and treat 2017 with the most caution.

Insist on the Ford paperwork, a certified Ford GT technician's inspection and a fully working rear wing and active suspension. Compare [Ford GT prices by year](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/ford/gt) and the [cheapest Ford GT for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cheapest/ford/gt) pages before you commit to a specification, and see [used Ford models](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/ford) if you are still cross-shopping.

## second-generation Ford GT: common questions

### What is the best second-generation Ford GT to buy?

A 2020 to 2022 car is the best choice for most buyers. CarsCounsel rates those years best for their 660 hp and improved cooling. The Carbon Series is Octane Files' pick for drivers, and the LM Edition tops the special editions.

### What goes wrong with the second-generation Ford GT?

The main issues are the 2017 and 2018 rear wing valve block leak, which led to a recall, and overheating on early cars in sustained track use. CarsCounsel also reports early engine failures replaced under warranty, plus electrical problems and active aero systems that need specialist diagnostics.

### Is the second-generation Ford GT reliable?

It is hard to say, because the evidence is thin. CarsCounsel says long-term data on 2020 to 2022 cars is limited, and it warns about early thermal and engine problems on 2017 to 2019 cars. Owners have filed no complaints with NHTSA, but there are two recall campaigns.

### How much does it cost to run a second-generation Ford GT?

The sources give no firm running-cost figures. Octane Files calls tires a serious cost, and OwningSupercars says servicing follows Ford's intervals and oil specifications and needs Ford Performance certification. Get quotes from a certified technician before buying.

### How much is a used second-generation Ford GT?

Asking prices for the 10 cars we track for sale right now run from $749,000 to $3,000,975, with a median of $1,198,510. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the second-generation Ford GT been recalled?

NHTSA lists 2 recall campaigns filed for the 2017 to 2022 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for structure. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
