## The Gallardo as a used buy

The biggest bills on a used Gallardo are the E-gear clutch and, on the earliest cars, the engine's weaker conrod bearings. The 2004 to 2014 run covers coupes and Spyders, a 5.0-litre V10 that grew into a 5.2, and a choice of six-speed manual or the automated E-gear.

Production reached 14,022 cars before the Huracan took over, and [Magneto](https://www.magnetomagazine.com/articles/2003-2013-lamborghini-gallardo-buying-guide-from-magneto/) calls the Gallardo the best-selling Lamborghini ever. Budget for a specialist to measure E-gear clutch wear with diagnostic equipment, because it cannot be judged by feel. Then have the panels examined for repaired accident damage, since aluminum chassis and body repairs are expensive.

## Gallardo years and versions

The first coupe arrived for the 2004 model year with a 5.0-litre V10 making 493bhp, driving all four wheels. The Spyder debuted in 2006, and a limited-edition SE carried a 520-hp version of the V10. The 2007 Superleggera made 530hp and reached 60mph in 3.8 seconds. In 2008 the engine grew to 5.2 litres with direct injection, and power topped out at 562bhp.

Magneto says the later cars, especially post-2008, are the ones to have because of continual refinements. The engine history fits that: the original V10 used an odd-firing crankshaft, the 5.2 an even-firing 72-degree layout, and the earliest 2004-2005 engines have weaker conrod bearings than the ones that followed.

Manual cars are rarer, mechanically simpler and command a premium, according to several of the sources we read. E-gear was specified on around 80 percent of cars, so a manual takes some finding. [Hagerty](https://www.hagerty.com/media/market-trends/your-handy-2004-13-lamborghini-gallardo-buyers-guide/) calls the rear-drive LP550-2 Valentino Balboni, limited to 250 cars, the most desired limited run and the most focused and rewarding. Magneto adds that the LP570-4 Spyder Performante and both Superleggera variants command big prices. ## Common Gallardo problems

Most of the serious faults sit in the early cars and the E-gear transmission.

### E-gear clutch wear

Early E-gear cars can wear clutches quickly, and their hydraulic pumps can tire while the actuator seals fail. Clutch life depends on the driver and can be as short as 5000 miles, according to Magneto.

### Early engine weaknesses

The 2004-2005 5.0-litre V10s have weaker conrod bearings than later engines. Early cars were also plagued by oil-pump trouble, so ask what has been done.

### Sticking throttle bodies

An uneven idle and a snatchy throttle point to sticking throttle bodies. [Hagerty](https://www.hagerty.co.uk/articles/lamborghini-gallardo-buyers-guide/) describes them as easy to fix.

### Anti-roll bar bushes

Early cars wore out anti-roll bar bushes prematurely, and [WhichCar](https://www.whichcar.com.au/features/lamborghini-gallardo-buyers-guide) says updated units cured it. The optional nose-lift system can also fail if it goes unused.

### Weak handbrake

The handbrake is a known weak spot on the Gallardo, so test that it holds before you sign.

### Heat damage and mirror leaks

[Ed Bolian](https://edbolian.com/lamborghini-gallardo-pre-purchase-inspection-ppi-checklist/) says heat damage to the rear bumper and lights is extremely common. Windshield-mounted auto-dimming mirrors are prone to leaking.

## What to check on a used Gallardo

Most of these checks follow from the faults above, and a few need diagnostic gear.

- Have a specialist read E-gear clutch wear with diagnostic equipment, because feel will not tell you.
- Ask for proof that the E-gear software updates have been applied.
- Confirm the dry-sump oil is not overfilled, since too much can damage the engine.
- Run your eye along the panel gaps for uneven shut lines that hint at repair, as aluminum chassis and body repairs are expensive.
- Be wary of a wrapped car and ask to see the paint beneath, since a wrap can hide bodywork problems.
- Listen for the exhaust valves opening at 4000 rpm.
- Turn to full lock at low speed; loud grinding suggests the front differential oil is overdue.
- Compare the oil pressure with Ed Bolian's figures: at least 4-6 bar under acceleration and not below 1 bar at idle.
- Match the tires to Pirelli or an equal rolling diameter, because aftermarket wheels or other tires can cause differential problems.
- Inspect the rear bumper and lights for heat damage, and the rear view mirror for leak marks.

## Gallardo running costs

The clutch is the big item. Hagerty and Ed Bolian both put an E-gear clutch replacement at $5000 to $8000, and Ed Bolian says a shift actuator replacement runs about $15k. UK quotes are lower, at £3000 in one guide and £2500 in another.

[Autocar](https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/lambo-gallardo-used-buying-guide) puts servicing at £1200 annually and £2500 every two years. Ed Bolian says tires cost $1,500 to $2,500 a set, and that brake pads and rotors last about 30k miles and cost around $3k. ## Gallardo recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 4 recall campaigns for 2004 to 2014 Gallardos. One covers 2004 to 2006 Coupe and Spyder cars, where high pressure steering pipes near the power steering pump might leak. Another, for 2006, covers suspension double wishbone bolts that may come loose. A third covers 2007 to 2009 cars with carbon ceramic brake discs, where the screws securing the rotors may fail after exposure to salt. The fourth, for 2011 to 2014, involves ECU software that may erase trouble codes after the ignition is turned off, so warning lamps do not light.

Owners have filed 6 complaints with NHTSA, one each for components including the engine, fuel system and brakes. Three of them mention fires. They are reports, not proven faults. Check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup to see whether the work was done.

Buy a post-2008 5.2-litre car, and a manual if you can find one. Skip the 2004-2005 cars unless the engine history is documented. Hagerty and WhichCar both rate the V10 as durable, so the money goes on the transmission and the bodywork.
