The L405 Range Rover is a big, complex aluminum SUV where the engine you pick and the paperwork behind it decide whether ownership is tolerable or expensive.

## The L405 Range Rover as a used buy

The L405 Range Rover is the fourth-generation car, on sale from 2013 and covered here through the 2022 model year. Deliveries began in January 2013. It has an aluminum-intensive body, standard electronic air suspension, an eight-speed automatic and permanent four-wheel drive. No manual was offered.

It suits someone who wants the size, the 3,500kg tow rating and the long-wheelbase option, and who will budget for upkeep. [Auto Express](https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/land-rover/range-rover/107204/used-range-rover-mk4-l405-2012-2021-review-and-buyers-guide) says plainly that the Mk4 is costly to maintain and insure, uses a lot of fuel and cannot be run on a tight budget.

Two things matter most. Know which engine you are buying, because the worst faults are tied to specific ones. And buy on documents: the service history, the recall work and, on V8s, proof the coolant pipes were replaced. ## L405 Range Rover years and versions

Launch engines were a 254bhp 3.0 TDV6 and a 334bhp 4.4 SDV8 diesel, plus a 503bhp supercharged 5.0-litre V8 petrol. A long-wheelbase body arrived in March 2014 with an extra 186mm of rear legroom. A supercharged 335bhp petrol V6 followed in late 2016. November 2017 brought the SVAutobiography, the P400e plug-in hybrid and a redesigned interior with dual-screen infotainment. The facelift added new front and rear fascias and LED matrix headlights. [Autocar](https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/used-cars/recent-range-rover-fiat-panda-money-its-time-buy-l405) says it improved infotainment usability and connectivity a lot, which is a reason to look at post-facelift cars if you will use the screens. Pre-facelift MOST optical-ring infotainment can fail as a whole when one node goes, according to [Budget Parts](https://www.roverparts.eu/blogs/news-land-rover-parts/range-rover-l405-problems-fixes).

For the 2020 US model year a 395hp 3.0L Ingenium inline-six mild hybrid replaced the supercharged V6. [What Breaks](https://what-breaks.com/land-rover/range-rover-l405) calls the Ingenium sixes the most refined and mature engines and the most rational pick. CarScout considers the SC380 V6 the more sensible choice than the V8 for most buyers.

The 5.0 supercharged V8 is magnificent, says Auto Express, but its running costs can be crippling. The same publication prefers the regular TDV6, SDV6 or TDV8 diesels over the non-plug-in diesel-electric hybrid. CarScout warns that SVAutobiography cars carry the most complex electronics and the highest part replacement costs. Later special editions include the Fifty, Westminster and Westminster Black.

## Common L405 Range Rover problems

The serious faults depend on the engine, so match this list to the car in front of you.

### Coolant crossover pipe

On the supercharged V8, the plastic coolant crossover pipe under the supercharger can crack and empty the cooling system fast, possibly destroying the engine. Several sources recommend an aluminum replacement. [CarScout](https://usecarscout.com/blog/used-land-rover-range-rover-l405-buying-guide) puts the job at $2,100 to $2,600 at an independent specialist.

### Timing chain wear

On the 5.0 supercharged V8 the timing chain guides and tensioner can wear, which you hear as a rattle when the engine starts cold. [Fault File](https://faultfile.co.uk/cars/range-rover) says it mostly shows from around 50,000 miles. Guide failure costs $3,500 to $5,500 at an independent, per CarScout.

### TDV6 crankshaft failure

The 3.0 TDV6 diesel has a history of crankshaft and bearing failures. The sign is a deep knock from low in the engine, worst when cold. The repair is a used replacement engine at $8,000 to $15,000 installed, according to CarScout.

### Transmission shudder

The ZF eight-speed can shudder at around 80,000 miles, often cured by a fluid change. Neglect can lead to a rebuild at $4,000 to $6,000, CarScout says.

### Air suspension faults

The air suspension can sag or fail to hold height from leaking springs, a weak compressor or a sticking valve block. Budget Parts adds that the compressor is prone to thermal cutout when an air spring seeps.

### Electronics and parking brake

Auto Express says electronic faults are common, so confirm everything works. The electronic parking brake can stick on or fail to release.

### Keyless latches

On 2013 to 2016 cars the keyless door and tailgate latches could release on their own, which led to a recall. Check that the recall work was done and done properly.

## What to check on a used L405 Range Rover

Bring a specialist if you can, and go through these on a viewing.

- Ask for documents proving the aluminum coolant pipe replacement on any supercharged V8.
- Listen to the engine from cold for a rattle, which points to timing chain wear on the 5.0, or a deep knock on a TDV6.
- Cycle the air suspension several times and watch that the car rises and holds its height.
- Check the footwells, the boot and the sunroof drains for damp.
- Feel for juddering at low speeds and ask when the transfer box oil was last changed, since Auto Express suggests every 30,000 miles.
- Drive at speed and note any vibration, as buckled wheels and failing rear differentials are not unknown and high-speed vibrations may be costly.
- Ask for evidence of a transmission fluid change on cars near 80,000 miles.
- Test every switch, screen and the parking brake, and look for infotainment that drops out.
- Confirm the recall history and that the work was carried out, including the door latch campaigns on 2013 to 2016 cars.
- Ask for a full service record showing annual or 16,000-mile intervals.

## L405 Range Rover running costs

Auto Express says every model needs a service every 12 months or 16,000 miles, from £425 on a 3.0 TDV6, with the 10th service possibly over £1,600. Those are UK figures. Only the TDV6 has a cambelt, due every seven years or 112,000 miles.

Fuel is a big line on the V8. CarScout reckons the 5.0L supercharged V8 returns about 15 mpg combined, roughly $3,000 to $4,500 a year in fuel. The big repair figures are in the faults above.

## L405 Range Rover recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 40 recall campaigns for these model years. The more serious ones cover a front suspension upper knuckle joint that may crack and let a suspension arm detach (2014 to 2017), a possibly blocked engine cam carrier oil channel that can cause an oil leak (2020 to 2022), and a water pump drive belt on the plug-in hybrid that may detach and let the engine overheat (2019 to 2021). Others cover keyless door latches that may appear closed but be unlatched (2013 to 2016) and a fuel pump bolt that may be too long on one 2017 car.

Recall N785, reported by [Australian Car.Reviews](https://www.australiancar.reviews/recalls-faults-land-rover-l405-range-rover-2013-21/), covers 2017 to 2021 cars where the engine can overheat and rupture a plastic coolant elbow, with a fire risk. Owners have filed 523 complaints with NHTSA, most about steering (136), then suspension (92) and the electrical system (89). Those are reports, not proven faults. A recall on one model year does not mean every car was affected, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

## Our verdict

Look for a post-facelift car with the Ingenium six, or the SC380 V6 if the budget points that way. Both are rated more sensible than the V8 by the sources we read. Skip a supercharged V8 unless it has proof of the aluminum coolant pipes, and be wary of a TDV6 that knocks from cold. Treat an SVAutobiography as a car with the highest repair bills.

Insist on a full service history, recall work confirmed and a pre-purchase inspection that includes the air suspension. Most buyers should look at a post-facelift car with the Ingenium inline-six, which What Breaks calls the most refined and mature engine. CarScout also prefers the SC380 V6 to the V8. Avoid the supercharged V8 without proof of coolant pipe replacement.

### What goes wrong with the L405 Range Rover?

Known faults include cracking coolant crossover pipes and timing chain wear on the 5.0 V8, and crankshaft failures on the 3.0 TDV6. Air suspension faults, electronic glitches, a sticking parking brake and transmission shudder are also reported.

### Is the L405 Range Rover reliable?
