Buying guide · 2010 to 2021 · Updated Oct 1, 2026

The Evora is a mid-engined, Toyota-powered Lotus built from 2010 to 2021, and most of its known faults depend on build date, so check that first.

## The Evora as a used buy

Loose gear linkage cables on early manual cars are a known fault on the Lotus Evora, so the build date and the linkage's history come before anything else on a used one. Every Evora is a mid-engined sports car with a supercharged 3.5-litre Toyota V6. Most are 2+2s, with a 160-litre boot, but a 2+0 version with more luggage space was also offered.

The chassis is bonded extruded aluminium and the bodywork is aluminium and fibreglass, so [PistonHeads](https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-buying-guides/lotus-evora-2009---ph-pocket-buying-guide/33875) says rust is not an issue. [RAC Drive](https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/car-reviews/lotus/evora/evora-2009-2021/) adds that the V6 has proved pretty reliable, with no serious engine or gearbox faults found.

## Evora years and versions

At launch there was only a 280hp car with a 6-speed manual. In 2010 the Evora S arrived with 350hp, and an IPS automatic became an option that adds 54kg. [Parkers](https://www.parkers.co.uk/lotus/evora/review/interior/) says interior quality improved with the 2012 model year update.

Build date matters. Cars from after September 2011 have an improved gearshift and a low inertia flywheel. The short ratio gearbox was a £1,495 option on early cars and is standard on the S. It is desirable but hurts CO2 and fuel consumption.

The Evora 400 arrived in 2015 with 400hp at 7,000rpm, a 4.2-second 0-62mph time with the manual and a 186mph top speed. Browse [used Evora 400 for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/lotus/evora-400) or read the [Evora 400 price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/lotus/evora-400) before you shop.

In 2017 the standard and S models gave way to the GT410 and GT430, with 410 and 430hp. The GT430 ended in 2019, the GT410 in 2021. Parkers calls the GT410 the more compliant car, with softer suspension and more sound insulation. [PistonHeads](https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-buying-guides/lotus-evora-400--ph-used-buying-guide/43940) says the GT430 is 47 percent stiffer at the front and 20 percent at the rear, and calls the GT410 Sport a neat halfway house with most of the GT430's thrills. RAC Drive rates the GTE the most wanted special edition, with six made in right-hand drive and 16 in left-hand drive. See [used Evora GT for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/lotus/evora-gt) and the [Evora GT market](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/lotus-evora-gt).

## Common Evora problems

Most of the known faults are tied to early cars, so the build date narrows your search before the inspection does.

### Gear linkage cables

Early manual cars had cable-operated shift problems, and Lotus replaced the cables under warranty. [Parkers](https://www.parkers.co.uk/lotus/evora/review/mpg-running-costs/) also lists loose linkage cables, particularly on early cars, as a known Evora issue.

### Clutch master cylinder

The pedal dropping to the floor is the sign that the clutch master cylinder has failed, and [CarChecker](https://www.carchecker.pro/reports/lotus_evora_mk1_3.5_v6.html) says it happens most often on pre-2012 cars.

### Rear control arm cracks

The rear upper control arm can crack at the casting seam, and TSB 2011/19 covers it. Clunks under braking are the sign to chase.

### Engine wiring harness

On cars built before late 2013, the engine wiring harness is a weak point.

### Supercharger failures

Odd supercharger failures have hit 400s, mostly an early batch of US cars, according to PistonHeads.

### Air-con condenser

Early condensers were troublesome, and road debris striking the unit often kills one. Misrouted condenser pipes can also leave the passenger footwell damp.

### Early door handles

Door handles were weak on early cars, so work the ones on the car in front of you.

## What to check on a used Evora

- Work the gear lever through every gate, because hesitation or slack points to cable adjustment or replacement.
- Ask when the timing belt was last changed, since the V6 has a belt rather than a chain.
- Press the clutch pedal repeatedly on a pre-2012 car and watch that it returns each time.
- Look at the casting seam of the rear upper control arms for cracks, then listen for clunks under braking.
- Ask the build date, and whether the engine wiring harness was dealt with if it falls before late 2013.
- Feel the passenger footwell carpet for damp, which can point to misrouted condenser pipes.
- Shine a torch at the air-con condenser for impact damage from road debris.
- Look for bubbling or lifting of the dash, and listen for grinding as each window moves.
- Test the parking sensors, which are near-essential given the tiny rear window.

## Evora running costs

RAC Drive gives a service interval of every 9000 miles, with minor services about £500 and major services around £800, the latter due every four years. Those are UK figures. The same source puts a manual clutch at around 50,000 miles.

Clutch replacement is expensive because the rear clamshell must come off, and CarChecker says specialists charge €4,000-6,000. RAC Drive prices a replacement condenser at about £175 before fitting, and AP Racing brake pads at around £200 for the fronts and the same for the rears.

## Evora recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 6 recall campaigns for 2010 to 2021 Evoras. Three cover 2011 cars and engine oil: an oil cooler hose that may detach from its fitting (a campaign that also takes in certain Elise and Exige models), an oil cooler hose that may chafe and rupture on supercharged manual cars, and a three-piece oil feed pipe that can rupture. The other three cover 2018 steering column collapse, a 2017 to 2018 passenger footwell toe board that lacks stiffness, and a temporary airbag exemption on certain 2013 cars built from September to November 2012.

Check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup to see whether it falls inside any of these. Owners have filed 15 complaints with NHTSA, which are reports and not proven faults. Seven concern the engine and six the suspension. One mentions a crash, and none mention fires, injuries or deaths.

## NHTSA recalls for the Evora

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2010 to 2021 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 19V263000 | Apr 2, 2019 | 2017 to 2018 | Structure | In the event of a crash, if the occupant's knee contacts the rigid structure, there may be an increased risk of injury. |
| 18V781000 | Nov 6, 2018 | 2018 | Steering | If the steering column does not collapse as intended in a crash, it can increase the risk of injury. |
| 14V280000 | May 27, 2014 | 2011 | Engine and engine cooling | A detached oil hose could spray oil on a tire, increasing the risk of a crash, or it could spray oil throughout the engine compartment, increasing the risk of a fire. |
| 13V314000 | Jul 16, 2013 | 2011 | Engine and engine cooling | Engine oil may be ejected onto the road or rear wheels which could cause a reduction in vehicle control and potential engine failure, increasing the risk of a crash. Engine oil sprayed onto a heat source may also lead to a vehicle fire. |
| 13V216000 | May 21, 2013 | 2013 | Equipment | An incorrect certification label may prevent the owner from determining recall applicability, potentially increasing the risk of a crash or injury. |
| 12V477000 | Oct 1, 2012 | 2011 | Engine and engine cooling | The ruptured pipe can result in oil loss and engine damage, and oil sprayed onto hot engine components may result in a fire. |

## Owner complaints to NHTSA about the Evora

Owners filed 15 complaints with NHTSA for the 2010 to 2021 model years (1 crash reported). A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

| Component | Complaints |
| --- | --- |
| Engine | 7 |
| Suspension | 6 |
| Power train | 3 |
| Electrical system | 2 |
| Steering | 2 |
| Air bags | 1 |

## Our verdict

Treat build date as your first filter. Sources tie the clutch master cylinder to pre-2012 cars and the wiring harness to cars built before late 2013, and cars from after September 2011 got the better gearshift and low inertia flywheel. Among the later cars, the GT410 is the softer, more compliant Evora, and the GT410 Sport gives most of the GT430's thrills. The GT430 is much stiffer, so drive one before you commit.

Whichever you choose, have the casting seams of the rear upper control arms inspected for cracks, and on a manual, check how the gear lever slots home.

## Evora: common questions

### What is the best Evora to buy?

The GT410 is the one to find if you want the softer, more compliant Evora, with extra sound insulation and a reversing camera. The GT410 Sport is the pick if you want most of the GT430's thrills. The GT430 is much stiffer, so drive one first.

### What goes wrong with the Evora?

The main faults are tied to early cars: gear linkage cables, a clutch master cylinder that can fail, cracked rear upper control arms and the engine wiring harness. Air-con condensers and door handles were also weak on early cars. Some 400s, mostly an early US batch, have had supercharger failures.

### Is the Evora reliable?

Mostly. RAC Drive says the Toyota V6 has proved pretty reliable, with no serious engine or gearbox faults found. The known problems cluster on early cars: linkage cables, the clutch master cylinder and the wiring harness. NHTSA lists 6 recall campaigns and 15 owner complaints.

### How much does it cost to run an Evora?

RAC Drive gives UK figures of about £500 for a minor service and £800 for a major one, with intervals every 9000 miles. A manual clutch lasts around 50,000 miles, and CarChecker says specialists charge €4,000-6,000 to replace it. Brake pads are about £200 for the fronts and the same for the rears.

### How much is a used Evora?

Asking prices for the 33 cars we track for sale right now run from $38,772 to $97,925, with a median of $83,925. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the Evora been recalled?

NHTSA lists 6 recall campaigns filed for the 2010 to 2021 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for structure. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
