Buying guide · 2016 to 2023 · Updated Oct 1, 2026

The AMG GT's twin-turbo V8 gets good marks from the specialists we read, but the dual-clutch gearbox, the driveshaft recall and the pricey dampers decide which one to buy.

## The AMG GT as a used buy

The Mercedes-AMG GT (C190 coupe, R190 roadster) ran from the 2016 through 2023 model years, and the early cars need more checking than the late ones. A carbon-fiber driveshaft recall covers the first cars, so completed recall paperwork matters before you buy.

It was the first Mercedes-AMG designed in-house by AMG from scratch. Under the long hood of every one sits the M178, a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 mounted behind the front axle, driving the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. There are only two seats and 11.3 cubic feet of trunk, so it suits someone who wants a weekend car more than a grand tourer.

[CarScout](https://usecarscout.com/blog/used-mercedes-benz-amg-gt-c190-buying-guide) rates the engine as bulletproof when serviced on schedule, and says the recurring complaint is the gearbox. That split between a strong engine and a gearbox to inspect runs through the whole guide. ## AMG GT years and versions

The GT S arrived first, and a lesser GT followed at the end of 2015, according to [RAC Drive](https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/car-reviews/mercedes-benz/mercedes-amg-gt-coupe-c190/mercedes-amg-gt-coupe-[c190]-2015-2023/). The GT R came for 2017, the GT C for 2018, the GT R Pro for 2020 and the 720-horsepower Black Series for 2021 and 2022. The roadster body ran 2018 through 2020 by CarScout's count, though RAC Drive says the roadster was offered from 2017 to 2023, so check the exact year of any roadster you look at. A mild facelift with updated styling and more power across the lineup came for 2020 and 2021.

On years, the sources agree. CarScout calls 2019 the cleanest for recall history, with 2020 close behind. [CarsCounsel](https://carscounsel.com/mercedes-benz-amg-gt-best-worst-years/) names 2020 and 2021 as the best choices and says 2016 and 2017 need careful inspection. That fits the driveshaft recalls, which hit the early cars. The current facelift coupes are covered on our [AMG GT Coupe page](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/mercedes-benz-amg-gt-post-facelift-base-coupe).

Among versions, CarScout picks the GT S as the best balance of daily usability against price, and says the GT R Pro only makes sense if you track the car regularly. The Pro uses the same 577-hp tune as the GT R but adds a roll cage, four-point harness, manual coilovers and a carbon roof panel. The GT C Edition 50 is cosmetic and interior extras with no mechanical changes. See the [GT S](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/mercedes-benz-amg-gt-pre-facelift), [GT R](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/mercedes-benz-amg-gt-gtr) and [Black Series](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/mercedes-benz-amg-gt-black-series) pages for each one's market. The Black Series makes 720 hp and 590 lb-ft, and its own recall is a wrong-length wheel speed sensor harness.

## Common AMG GT problems

Most of the trouble sits in the gearbox, the driveshaft on early cars, the dampers and the electronics.

### Carbon driveshaft bonding

The bond between the carbon-fiber driveshaft and its flange can be insufficient, and if the driveshaft separates at speed, the rear wheels abruptly lose their drive. The recall began in 2019 for 2016-2017 GT S and 2017 GT cars and widened in 2021 to 2016-2018 models. The repair was free.

### Dual-clutch gearbox

The 7-speed DCT can be jerky or hesitant at low speeds and in stop-and-go traffic, most noticeably in early years, says CarsCounsel. CarScout cites one owner whose transmission failed at 26,000 miles with an $18,000 bill after warranty, which it describes as an outlier.

### GT C neutral drop

GT C owners have reported the car dropping into neutral at highway speed with a rear differential lock warning. CarScout describes these reports as not widespread.

### Adaptive damper struts

The electronic struts of the adaptive dampers can leak or fail, and replacing them is expensive. Both CarsCounsel and carchecker.pro flag this.

### Turbo oil feed line

GT models built from May 2018 to the end of October 2019 were recalled for a possible leak from the turbo oil feed line, according to RAC Drive. Confirm the work was done on any car from that window.

### Infotainment lag

Early COMAND systems can lag, freeze or fail to pair with smartphones. CarsCounsel says later software largely fixed this.

### Software and other recalls

RAC Drive lists further recalls for ECU software on cars built up to March 2017, ESP and radio control unit software, and front seat belts. It also mentions a Lane Assist fault that is hard to pin down.

## What to check on a used AMG GT

Start with the paperwork, then the gearbox, then signs of hard use.

- Ask for recall completion paperwork, especially for the driveshaft campaigns.
- Book a pre-purchase inspection that includes a transmission health check.
- Drive a GT C for a sustained stretch at highway speed to see whether it drops into neutral.
- Feel the gearbox in stop-and-go traffic for jerky or hesitant shifts.
- Check for oil around the rear of the engine near the transmission bellhousing.
- Listen for wastegate rattle on start-up and under load.
- Test the exhaust flaps in both Comfort and Sport+.
- Look for leaks or warning messages from the adaptive damper struts.
- Run the infotainment and phone pairing for lag or freezing.
- Scan for track use: front splitter scraping, feathered rear tires, Alcantara shine, and roll cage mounts or harness bar holes.
- Check the alloy wheels for scratches and nicks, plus panel gaps, paint, electrics, air conditioning and the service book.

## AMG GT running costs

Servicing is due every 12,500 miles, says RAC Drive. [Dr. Vin](https://drvin.ai/vehicles/mercedes-benz/amg-gt) puts oil changes at $400 to $600, steel-rotor brake jobs at $2,000 to $3,000 and annual maintenance at $3,000 to $5,000. Carbon-ceramic brake replacement on equipped cars runs $12,000 to $18,000, it says.

CarScout says a full set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires on the GT R runs well over $2,000, and front brake pads begin near $230 an axle set, labor extra. [carchecker.pro](https://www.carchecker.pro/checklists/mercedes_amg_gt_s_c190.pdf) quotes European figures of up to €3,000 for wastegate rattle repair, up to €15,000 for the Getrag DCT and up to €2,000 for the oil separator. Budget for the dampers too, since replacement is expensive. Our [price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/mercedes-benz/amg-gt) covers what cars sell for.

## AMG GT recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 14 recall campaigns for 2016 to 2023 AMG GTs. The most serious are the carbon-fiber driveshaft campaigns for 2016-2018 cars, which warn of separation, and two air bag campaigns: a driver inflator housing made with defective steel on 2018 cars, and passenger occupant sensing on cars with Performance Seats. Others cover seat belts binding, a Black Series wheel speed sensor harness, headlights aimed too high on 2020 cars and several electrical and emergency-call software fixes, some over the air. A campaign for one model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so run any car's VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 30 complaints with NHTSA, with no crashes, injuries or deaths and one fire. Eight concern the power train and six the electrical system. These are reports, not proven faults.

## NHTSA recalls for the AMG GT

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2016 to 2023 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 22V365000 | May 20, 2022 | 2019 to 2021 | Electrical system | A disabled eCall system would prevent a vehicle occupant from contacting the emergency services call center in an emergency, potentially delaying emergency responders and increasing the risk of injury. |
| 22V042000 | Jan 28, 2022 | 2021 | Electronic stability control (esc) | A damaged speed sensor wiring harness can impair dynamic control functions, such as stability and traction control, and anti-lock brakes, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 21V478000 | Jun 25, 2021 | 2016 to 2018 | Power train | A separated driveshaft may cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 21V058000 | Feb 5, 2021 | 2017 to 2020 | Electrical system | Failure of the eCall system may result in emergency responders being dispatched to the wrong location, increasing the risk of injury following a crash. |
| 20V775000 | Dec 11, 2020 | 2020 | Exterior lighting | Incorrectly aimed headlights can reduce the visibility of oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 20V227000 | Apr 21, 2020 | 2020 | Communication | An inaccurate vehicle location or the inability to communicate with the call center may delay emergency responders, increasing the risk of injury in the event of an emergency. |
| 19V787000 | Nov 1, 2019 | 2016 to 2017 | Communication | An inaccurate vehicle location may delay emergency responders, increasing the risk of injury. |
| 19V457000 | Jun 14, 2019 | 2016 to 2017 | Power train | If the driveshaft separates, there may be a loss of drive, increasing the risk of crash. |
| 18V724000 | Oct 15, 2018 | 2018 | Electrical system | If the air bags do not deploy as intended, it can increase the risk of injury. |
| 18V208000 | Mar 29, 2018 | 2018 | Air bags | In the event of a crash involving driver air bag deployment, an improperly inflated air bag and/or an inflator rupture with sharp metal fragments might result in serious injury or death to the driver or to occupants. |
| 17V818000 | Dec 18, 2017 | 2017 | Air bags | A passenger air bag that is incorrectly activated or deactivated in the event of a crash increases the risk of injury due to potential incorrect airbag deployment or non-deployment. |
| 17V826000 | Dec 18, 2017 | 2018 | Seat belts | If the seat belt binds, slack may develop through occupant movement which may lead to increased personal injury in the event of a crash. |
| 17V177000 | Mar 14, 2017 | 2016 | Electrical system | If the air bags do not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, there would be an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash. |
| 16V308000 | May 17, 2016 | 2016 | Power train | If the adhesive bond fails and results in a loss of torque to the rear wheels, the vehicle operator may be unable to move the vehicle, or may experience deceleration if the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. |

## Owner complaints to NHTSA about the AMG GT

Owners filed 30 complaints with NHTSA for the 2016 to 2023 model years (1 fire reported). A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

| Component | Complaints |
| --- | --- |
| Power train | 8 |
| Electrical system | 6 |
| Service brakes | 4 |
| Unknown or other | 4 |
| Wheels | 4 |

## Our verdict

Aim for a 2020 or 2021 car, as CarsCounsel does, or a 2019 for its clean recall record per CarScout. Choose the GT S if you want one to use regularly, and skip the GT R Pro unless you track it. Treat 2016 and 2017 cars as ones to inspect hard.

Insist on completed driveshaft and turbo oil line recall paperwork where they apply, and a transmission health check from a specialist. Then check the dampers for leaks before you sign.

## AMG GT: common questions

### What is the best AMG GT to buy?

A 2020 or 2021 car is the best choice, according to CarsCounsel, and CarScout rates 2019 as cleanest for recalls. The GT S suits regular use, while the GT R Pro only makes sense if you track the car.

### What goes wrong with the AMG GT?

The main issues are the dual-clutch gearbox, the carbon driveshaft on early cars and the adaptive damper struts. Early infotainment can lag, and some cars had a turbo oil feed line recall. Check each against paperwork and a specialist inspection.

### Is the AMG GT reliable?
