The W463A G-Class has a costly G63 oil separator fault and a 2019 model year with the heaviest recall load, so year and engine matter more than trim.

## The W463A G-Class as a used buy

Buying a used W463A G-Class means checking the G63's oil separator and avoiding the worst of the 2019 model year. [CarScout's buyer's guide](https://usecarscout.com/blog/used-mercedes-benz-g-class-w463a-buying-guide) says 2019 carries the heaviest recall load and most early-production complaints.

The generation was introduced in 2018, with the redesign on sale from 2019 (the earlier truck has its own [W463 buying guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/mercedes-benz/g-class-w463)). The ladder frame, live rear axle and three locking differentials stayed. The front axle did not: independent double wishbones replaced the solid one, according to CarScout and [CarsCounsel](https://carscounsel.com/mercedes-benz-g-class-best-worst-years/). The body panels are aluminium, and [RAC Drive](https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/car-reviews/mercedes-benz/g-class/g-class-[w463a]-2018-2020/) reports a weight saving of 170kg and hand assembly by Magna-Steyr in Graz, Austria.

Both V8s get a 9-speed automatic and return about 14 mpg combined through 2024. RAC Drive lists up to 241mm of ground clearance and a proper low-range gearbox. If a Range Rover is also on your list, our [G-Wagon versus Range Rover comparison](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/compare/mercedes-benz-g-class-vs-land-rover-range-rover) sets them side by side.

## W463A G-Class years and versions

From 2019 to 2024 the G550 has a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 (M176) with 416 hp and 450 lb-ft. The AMG G63 uses the M177 version of that engine, with 577 hp and 627 lb-ft. CarScout treats them as two different vehicles on one body, so research [G 550 cars](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/mercedes-benz/g-class/g-550) and [AMG G 63 cars](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/mercedes-benz/g-class/amg-g-63) separately.

For 2025 the G550 lost its V8 and took a 3.0L turbo inline-six with 48-volt mild hybrid, 443 hp and 413 lb-ft, rated at about 18 mpg combined. The G63 kept the V8 and gained mild-hybrid assist and a new hydraulic suspension. MBUX infotainment also debuted that year. Earlier cars use the older COMAND-based system, with a 12.3-inch central screen and a digital instrument display of the same size.

Sources disagree on the best year. CarsCounsel calls 2019 through 2023 the best run and names the 2021 G550 top pick. CarScout prefers a 2024 V8, on the strength of the cleanest recall history among the pre-refresh years. The [G-Class price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/mercedes-benz/g-class) shows how each year is priced.

The G63 4x4 Squared is a separate, very low-volume vehicle with its own recall population, so none of the regular G63 advice here applies to it.

## Common W463A G-Class problems

The G63's oil separator is the fault buyers talk about most, but it is not the only one.

### Oil separator and rear main seal

If the crankcase-ventilation oil separator clogs, internal pressure rises and can roll the rear main seal lip, which leaks oil. The part is cheap, yet the transmission has to come out to reach it. CarScout calls it the most-discussed G63 problem, worse on the M177 because that engine runs closer to its limits, with failures clustering around 40,000 miles.

### Early G550 oil use

Early 2019 G550 production had documented heavy oil consumption and misfires. Mercedes revised the ignition coils and reflashed the ECU on some cars.

### Intake valve carbon

Direct injection on the M177 lets carbon build up on the intake valves. Specialists recommend cleaning them every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.

### Steering pull and linkage

One G63 kept pulling to one side after several dealer repair attempts. The steering linkage and damper are flagged as more failure-prone than typical for the brand.

### Broken springs

Springs are known to break after heavy off-road use. A loud thump over speed bumps can point to a faulty one, says RAC Drive.

### Early software and electrics

Early 2019 cars can suffer software glitches, sensor failures, infotainment freezes and the occasional parasitic battery drain, according to [Autojunket](https://autojunket.com/vehicles/2019-mercedes-benz-g-class).

## What to check on a used W463A G-Class

CarScout says a pre-purchase inspection should catch the oil separator and rear main seal problem.

- Ask for a pre-purchase inspection that specifically covers the oil separator and rear main seal on any G63.
- Ask M177 sellers for records showing when the intake valves were last cleaned.
- Question any G63 approaching 40,000 miles about the separator and seal, since that is where reported failures cluster, and ask for invoices if work was done.
- Confirm the rear door latch recall was closed on 2019-2022 cars, and check recalls on 2019-2021 cars even if the seller says it was done.
- Test steering feel on the drive, and note any pull to one side.
- Cross some speed bumps and listen for a loud thump, then look for signs of over-enthusiastic off-roading.
- Check that all the digital instrument screens work as they should.
- On a 2019 car, check for infotainment freezes and see whether the battery holds a charge after standing.
- Ask whether the ignition coil and ECU updates were done on any 2019 G550.

## W463A G-Class running costs

Brake pads and rotors wear quickly on this heavy truck, and Autojunket singles out the G63. [Haynes](https://uk.haynes.com/pages/maintenance-plans-car-mercedes-benz-g-class-iii-2019-2024) lists brake fluid every 24 months and spark plugs every 80,000 km or 48 months for the G 63.

The biggest figure in the sources is the separator job. CarScout quotes one repair on a comparable M177-powered AMG at 27 labor hours and $9,300, because the separators are replaced along with the seal. Budget for the recurring intake cleaning on the M177 as well.

## W463A G-Class recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 12 recall campaigns for 2019 to 2027 cars. Among them are a front-axle wiring harness that can chafe against the oil cooler and cause loss of ABS and ESC (2019-2021), a fuel pump that may shut down and cut drive power (2021-2023, a campaign spanning many Mercedes models), and rear door latches that may not latch or open (one campaign expanded in 2024). A 2025 AMG G63 campaign covers a front radar board that can fail and disable automatic emergency braking. CarScout adds a differential-locking module recall for 2019-2020, where a failing resistor can deactivate ESP and ABS.

[NHTSA](https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) also holds 32 owner complaints, seven each about the electrical system and the engine. These are reports, not proven faults, and a campaign for one model year does not mean every car of that year was affected. Run the VIN of any car you are considering through NHTSA's recall lookup.

## NHTSA recalls for the W463A G-Class

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2019 to 2027 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

## Our verdict

Look for a 2021 G550. CarsCounsel rates it the best G-Class, it sits inside the 2019-2023 run that source favors, and it sidesteps the early-2019 oil consumption and software problems. A 2024 V8 is the other route, for the clean recall record CarScout reports. Browse [used G-Class listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/mercedes-benz/g-class) for either one, or see [G 550 cars on the market](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/mercedes-benz-g-class-gen-ii-g-550).

Pick a G63 if you want the one RAC Drive says suits those wanting to impress (our [AMG G 63 market page](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/mercedes-benz-g-class-gen-ii-g-63-amg) shows every one for sale), but only with invoices covering the oil separators and rear main seal, since the quoted repair was $9,300. On a 2019 car, insist on proof that the latch recall was closed.

## W463A G-Class: common questions

### What is the best W463A G-Class to buy?

The 2021 G550 is the one to find, since CarsCounsel names it the best G-Class. CarScout prefers a 2024 V8 for its clean recall history among pre-refresh cars and flags 2019 for its recall load.

### What goes wrong with the W463A G-Class?

The most-discussed fault is the G63's oil separator, which can roll the rear main seal and leak. Early 2019 G550s had oil consumption and misfires, and early cars can have software and electrical glitches. Steering linkage wear and springs breaking after hard off-roading are also reported.

### Is the W463A G-Class reliable?

Not consistently. The 2019 cars have the most recalls, and the G63's M177 has a known separator weakness, with failures clustering around 40,000 miles. Owners have filed 32 complaints with NHTSA, which are reports rather than proven faults.

### How much does it cost to run a W463A G-Class?

Expect quick brake wear, especially on the G63, and brake fluid every 24 months. The largest quoted bill is the separator repair, at $9,300 and 27 labor hours on a comparable M177 AMG. Specialists also advise intake cleaning every 30,000 to 50,000 miles.

### How much is a used W463A G-Class?

Asking prices for the 1,368 cars we track for sale right now run from $68,251 to $600,680, with a median of $149,683. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the W463A G-Class been recalled?

NHTSA lists 12 recall campaigns filed for the 2019 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for wheels. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
