## The 991 as a used buy

Check the engine history first if the 991 you are eyeing is a 991.1 GT3: early cars were recalled for engine fires, and many had their engines replaced. The generation runs from 2012 to 2019. The 991.1 Carrera has a naturally aspirated engine, while the 991.2 facelift turbocharged the whole Carrera range.

Electric power steering replaced the hydraulic setup, and the car has a longer wheelbase and wider track than the 997. Reliability gets good reviews: [Stuttcars](https://www.stuttcars.com/porsche-buyers-guides/porsche-911-991-buyers-guide/), [PCARWise](https://www.pcarwise.com/local-help/used-porsche-buyers-guide/porsche-911-buying-guides/porsche-911-991-buyers-guide/) and [carchecker.pro](https://www.carchecker.pro/checklists/porsche_911_991_carrera.pdf) all describe a strong record and a reputation as a solid everyday car, and no 991 variant has an IMS bearing concern.

The risk sits in specific places: the GT3 engine replacement paperwork, PDK servicing, and a handful of leaks that the sections below cover.

## 991 years and versions

The 991.1 Carrera has a 3.4L engine with 350 hp, and the Carrera S a 3.8L with 400 hp. The 991.2 Carrera has a 3.0L twin-turbo with 370 hp, and the S makes 420 hp. The facelift also added Apple CarPlay. The 991 brought a seven-speed manual alongside a seven-speed PDK, and PCARWise calls the early manual cumbersome and unpopular, though it was improved for the 991.2.

Even so, PCARWise considers the 991.1 the pick for manual cars. [FlatSixFinder](https://flatsixfinder.com/guides/porsche-991-buyers-guide.html) goes further and regards the 991.1 Carrera S manual as the last great naturally aspirated Carrera. Compare them on our [991.1 Carrera S page](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-911-991-1-carrera-s) and the [991.2 Carrera page](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-911-991-2-carrera).

[PistonHeads](https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-buying-guides/porsche-911-carrera-991-2--ph-used-buying-guide/45890) calls the 991.2 Carrera T the last narrow-body 911. It has the 370 hp engine, a seven-speed manual, reduced sound insulation and no rear seats as standard, and its 20kg weight saving over the S leaves it feeling not far short of that car. PistonHeads adds that the GTS is a regular nomination as the pick of a Porsche range, with PDK or manual. [Porsche Club GB](https://www.porscheclubgb.com/regions-registers/registers/modern/991/porsche-911-(991)-buyers-guide) lists 430 hp for the 991.1 GTS and 450 hp for the 991.2, and says plain cast iron brakes are plenty for everyday driving, so there is no need to hold out for ceramics.

At the top, the 991.2 GT3 has a 4.0-litre 500 hp engine that revs to 9,000 rpm, with PDK or a six-speed manual. The 991.2 GT3 RS makes 520 hp and is PDK only, and the GT2 RS has 700 hp, rear-wheel drive and PDK only. The 911 R paired a 500 hp 4.0-litre with a six-speed manual. Our pages for the [991.1 GT3](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-911-991-1-gt3), [991.2 GT3 RS](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-911-991-2-gt3-rs) and [991 GT2 RS](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-911-991-gt2-rs) cover each market. The Targa is all-wheel drive only with an automatic roof, and the last 991 was a 2019 Speedster, of which Porsche built 1,948.

## Common 991 problems

### Early GT3 engine fires

Defective valve springs on 991.1 GT3s could break and let oil reach hot exhaust parts, which led to a recall, and many cars had their engines replaced. [Renndriver](https://renndriver.com/guides/porsche-991/) reports that the first 785 GT3s were recalled and re-engined after two fires.

### PDK maintenance and faults

A PDK that has not been serviced correctly can become a weak point, and PCARWise puts the cost of replacing one north of $20K. On the 991.1, mechatronic and solenoid faults appear at 120,000 to 220,000 km and cost €800 to €2,000, according to [VIN Service Planner](https://vin-service-planner.com/en/porsche-911-991-1/). A [consumer-magazine used-car review](https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/911/coupe/used-review/n18062/reliability) also reports dual-clutch trouble on earlier cars.

### Transfer case issues

PCARWise lists known transfer case problems on the four-wheel-drive models. Targas are all-wheel drive too, so they belong in that group.

### Coolant and thermostat leaks

Coolant pump leaks occur mainly on 2017-18 991.2 cars. On the 991.1 the thermostat housing can leak, and carchecker.pro gives a repair figure of up to €1,800.

### PASM damper leaks

PASM dampers typically start leaking at 80,000-120,000 km. Repairs can reach €3,500, by carchecker.pro's estimate.

### High-pressure fuel pump

A fault here may cause hesitation, power loss or stalling. Budget up to €2,500, says carchecker.pro.

### Paint and wheel damage

Earlier cars drew owner complaints about paintwork quality. The same review says curb damage to the alloys is costly to put right.

## What to check on a used 991

Begin with the paperwork on any GT3 and a diagnostic read on everything else.

- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and ask for proof that any open campaigns were completed.
- Ask a 991.1 GT3 seller for documents showing the engine replacement.
- Request a PIWIS diagnostic read, which shows fault codes and over-revs and compares the DME mileage with the dash.
- Cycle through every PDK mode on the drive, then ask to see records of the transmission oil and clutch fluid services.
- Test PASM in both Normal and Sport, and look under the car for leaks at the dampers.
- Listen as the rear spoiler rises and lowers, and walk away from grinding or warning lights.
- Operate the roof on Cabriolets and Targas, and look for damage or noise.
- Measure tire tread, which should be at least 3mm, and confirm the correct Porsche N-ratings.
- Examine ceramic brake discs for a fully glossy working surface and chips at the edges.
- Look over each alloy wheel for curb damage.

## 991 running costs

Servicing follows a schedule. VIN Service Planner has engine oil and filter due every 15,000 km or 12 months on the 991.1. Carchecker.pro's PDK schedule has the gearbox oil changed at 120,000 km or after 4 years, with the clutch fluid following at 180,000 km or after 12 years.

FlatSixFinder says rear tires can wear out in as little as 10,000 to 15,000 miles under spirited use, at $600 to $1,000 per tire. It puts ceramic brake replacement at $10,000+ per axle, a reason to consider the cast iron setup Porsche Club GB finds adequate. Our [Porsche 911 price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/porsche/911) covers what the cars themselves cost.

## 991 recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 15 recall campaigns across 2012 to 2019 cars. They include a 2014 GT3 connecting rod that may come loose and damage the crankcase, a 2012 Carrera S fuel line that may disconnect at the quick connector, and air bag control unit capacitor defects on 2016 to 2017 cars that can deactivate the air bags or deploy them inadvertently. A campaign filed for one model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check each car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Other campaigns cover the 2012 to 2013 Carrera exhaust tail pipe, the 2014 to 2015 hood latch, a loose rear axle upper control arm screw on the 2019 Speedster and loose driveshaft bolts on the 2019 GT2 RS. Owners have filed 41 complaints with NHTSA, most about the engine (10), then the electrical system (8) and exterior lighting (7). Four mention fires. These are reports, not proven faults.

## NHTSA recalls for the 991

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2012 to 2019 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

## Our verdict

If you want a manual, the sources point to the 991.1: PCARWise prefers it, and FlatSixFinder rates the Carrera S manual as the last great naturally aspirated Carrera. If you want the turbo car in its purest form, PistonHeads makes the case for the 991.2 Carrera T, which has a seven-speed manual and saves 20kg over the S. PistonHeads also nominates the GTS as the pick of a Porsche range.

Skip any PDK car with gaps in its service history, and any 991.1 GT3 that cannot show paperwork for its engine replacement. Among the [991s for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/porsche/911/991), spend your inspection time on the dampers, where carchecker.pro puts leak repairs at up to €3,500, and check that the rear spoiler works smoothly.

## 991: common questions

### What is the best 991 to buy?

The 991.1 Carrera S with the manual is the car the sources single out. FlatSixFinder calls it the last great naturally aspirated Carrera, and PCARWise prefers the 991.1 for manuals. PistonHeads favors the 991.2 Carrera T and the GTS if you want something different.

### What goes wrong with the 991?

The main faults are PDK trouble if it is poorly maintained, transfer case issues on four-wheel-drive cars, and coolant and thermostat leaks. PASM damper leaks and high-pressure pump faults also appear in the sources. 991.1 GT3s were recalled for engine fires.

### Is the 991 reliable?

Mostly yes. Stuttcars, PCARWise and carchecker.pro all describe a strong reliability record, and no variant has an IMS bearing concern. The weak points are PDK maintenance and the 991.1 GT3 engine recall.

### How much does it cost to run a 991?

Rear tires cost $600 to $1,000 each and can wear out in 10,000 to 15,000 miles under hard use, per FlatSixFinder. The same source puts ceramic brakes at $10,000+ per axle, and PCARWise says a PDK replacement is north of $20K. Budget for damper and coolant leaks as well.

### How much is a used 991?

Asking prices for the 702 cars we track for sale right now run from $44,336 to $2,000,084, with a median of $140,594. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the 991 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 15 recall campaigns filed for the 2012 to 2019 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for suspension. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
