## The 992 as a used buy

Every 992.1 model year from 2020 through 2024 has had at least one recall, so a used Porsche 911 (992) should come with proof that the work was done. The engines are the strong point: [CarScout](https://usecarscout.com/blog/used-porsche-911-992-buying-guide) and [FlatSixFinder](https://flatsixfinder.com/guides/porsche-992-buyers-guide.html) rank the 992 as the most reliable 911 Porsche has built, with no IMS bearing or bore scoring issues.

The 992 is the eighth-generation 911, on sale from the 2020 model year. Every one is wider than the 991 (see [our 991 buying guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/porsche/911-991)), rear-drive Carreras included. Power runs from the 379 hp Carrera through the Carrera S and GTS to the Turbo and Turbo S, with the GT3 and GT3 RS above them.

[911Finder](https://www.911finder.de/en/kaufberatung-porsche-992-mk1-carrera-und-carrera-s) reckons the engines are dependable and the electronics are the challenge, naming early software glitches, the lithium starter battery and some wiring and injector faults. Our [used Porsche 992 listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/porsche/911/992) let you narrow by trim and year to fit the advice below.

## 992 years and versions

The 992 arrived for 2020. The 992.1 ran through 2024, and the 992.2 facelift for 2025 added more power, a hybrid GTS and ended the manual on S-trim cars. The twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six makes 379 hp in the Carrera, 443 hp in the Carrera S and 473 hp in the GTS, which was added for 2022. The Turbo and Turbo S make 572 hp and 640 hp and come only with PDK.

The [992.1 GT3](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-911-992-1-gt3) has a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter making 502 hp and revving to 9,000 rpm, with double-wishbone front suspension, a first for the 911. The GT3 RS followed for 2023 with 518 hp, and the Dakar and Sport Classic were 2023 limited runs. The GT3 Touring drops the fixed wing, and manual GT3s carry a significant premium.

For the road, [Squeezed](https://squeezed.app/cars/porsche/911/2020), [Stuttcars](https://www.stuttcars.com/porsche-buyers-guides/porsche-911-992-buyers-guide/) and FlatSixFinder all favor the [Carrera S](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-911-992-1-carrera-s). FlatSixFinder and CarScout also call the [GTS](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-911-992-1-carrera-gts) the smart buy, with 473 hp and PASM Sport standard. 911Finder goes a step further and picks a manual Carrera S as the best long-term holding, since manuals are rare used.

CarScout's forum read is that 2022 and later cars suit buyers who can do without warranty cover, as the early wiring-harness and injector troubles were largely sorted by then. It rates 2023 the strongest 992.1 year, and puts 2021 at caution. Rear-axle steering and Sport Chrono are options worth seeking, and 911Finder lists Sport Chrono, sports exhaust and Bose or Burmester audio as essential for resale.

## Common 992 problems

The faults sources describe are mostly electrical or software, with a few mechanical wear points.

### Injector and wiring faults

Early Carrera and Carrera S cars have seen injector failures and harness faults that trigger a reduced-power warning and limp mode. Early Turbo S owners reported an injector misfire, which Porsche handled with a technical service bulletin instead of a recall.

### Infotainment glitches

Black screens, dropped connections and failed CarPlay were the complaints with early PCM software. Check that the update to PCM 6.0 has been done.

### Lithium battery lockout

A deeply discharged lithium starter battery can drop into a protection mode and often cannot be woken. 911Finder puts a new one at €1,500 to €2,000 at Porsche, plus coding.

### Active engine mounts

When a sensor fails on a Sport Chrono car, the active mounts can lose damping. Expect a harsher ride and clunking.

### PDK clutch wear

Track use or skipped fluid services can wear PDK clutches faster.

### GT3 RS glass

Lightweight glass on the GT3 RS is more fragile than the standard item, and windshields have cracked from stone chips.

### Interior rattles

CarScout calls rattles from the door cards, dashboard and parcel shelf a common complaint on 992.1 Carreras.

## What to check on a used 992

- Have a scan tool run over the car during the pre-purchase inspection, looking for stored injector and wiring faults.
- Ask for documentation that recalls 21V157000 and 21V467000, both from 2021, were carried out on the specific car.
- Find out whether the battery has ever been deeply discharged and whether the owner used a suitable tender.
- Confirm the PCM 6.0 update is installed, then work the screen, Bluetooth and CarPlay for dropouts.
- On the test drive, listen for clunking over bumps and note a harsh ride, which can point to failed active engine mounts.
- On a Targa, have the seller demonstrate the full open-and-close cycle of the roof.
- Look over every wheel and the underside of the nose for curb and scrape damage.
- Measure pad and rotor wear, since carbon-ceramic rotors are expensive, and read the tire date codes.
- On a GT3 RS, ask for the windshield's full history.
- On a Turbo or Turbo S, inspect paint depth and finish, and ask whether the dealer did the injector bulletin work.
- On a manual car, ask for an over-rev report, which a factory scan tool can read.

## 992 running costs

The PDK fluid service falls due every 40,000 miles, and [askkestrel.com](https://www.askkestrel.com/vehicles/porsche-911-carrera-s-992-2020) puts it at $800 to $1,500. Clutch packs run $8,000 to $15,000. [PCARWISE](https://www.pcarwise.com/local-help/used-porsche-buyers-guide/porsche-911-buying-guides/porsche-911-992-buyers-guide/) adds that the 2 and 4 year services stay expensive whatever the mileage.

CarScout says a GT3 tire set runs $1,500 or more, and the glass alone for a GT3 RS windshield costs roughly $2,500 to $3,000. It also warns that a $3,500 to $5,000 fender repair is not hypothetical, given the aluminum and steel body. For where trims sit in the market, see the [Porsche 911 price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/porsche/911).

## 992 recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 20 recall campaigns for these model years, as of October 31, 2026. Among them are a windshield and rear window that may detach (24V155000, 2020-2024 911s), center-lock wheel bolts that may fracture (24V809000, 2021-2024 911s, plus a further 2024 campaign, 26V682000), and missing body welds on certain 2020 Carrera S and 2022 Carrera cars (23V313000).

Others cover a loose brake booster rod on 2020-2021 Carreras and a dashboard console that may break in an airbag deployment on 2022-2023 cars. A campaign for one model year doesn't mean every car of that year was affected, so check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Owners have filed 36 complaints with NHTSA, most about the fuel and propulsion system (14) and the engine (7). These are reports, not proven faults; one mentions a fire, none a crash, injury or death.

## Our verdict

Our pick is a 2022 or later 992.1, as a [Carrera S](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/porsche/911/carrera-s) or GTS if the car is for the road. If you can find a manual Carrera S, 911Finder rates it the best long-term holding. PCARWISE and askkestrel.com both name a certified pre-owned car as the best purchase.

Insist on proof that the recalls were done and a clean scan for injector and wiring faults. Ask for the PDK fluid service record too, particularly if the car has been tracked.

## 992: common questions

### What is the best 992 to buy?

Our pick is a Carrera S or GTS from 2022 or later. Squeezed, Stuttcars and FlatSixFinder favor the Carrera S for street driving, and forum owners call the GTS the smart buy with 473 hp. 911Finder rates a manual Carrera S the best long-term holding.

### What goes wrong with the 992?

The main problems are electrical rather than mechanical. Early cars had injector and wiring harness faults causing limp mode, plus infotainment glitches and lithium battery lockouts. Active engine mounts can fail, and PDK clutches wear faster with track use or missed fluid services.

### Is the 992 reliable?

Yes on the engines, less so on the electronics. CarScout and FlatSixFinder rank the 992 as the most reliable 911 Porsche has built, with no IMS bearing or bore scoring issues. Every 992.1 model year has had at least one recall, though.

### How much does it cost to run a 992?

Budget for a PDK fluid service every 40,000 miles at $800 to $1,500, and $8,000 to $15,000 if the clutch packs need replacing. Porsche's 2 and 4 year services stay expensive regardless of mileage. A fender repair can cost $3,500 to $5,000.

### How much is a used 992?

Asking prices for the 1,359 cars we track for sale right now run from $95,293 to $799,085, with a median of $211,192. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the 992 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 20 recall campaigns filed for the 2020 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for wheels. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
