Buying guide · 1999 to 2005 · Updated Oct 1, 2026

The 996 GT2 is a rear-drive turbo car with no electronic aids and a Mezger engine that carries no IMS bearing, so the driver and the bills matter more than the engine.

## The 996 as a used buy

The 996 GT2 asks two things of a buyer: the skill to drive a rear-wheel-drive turbo car with no electronic traction aids, and the budget for a car where many jobs mean engine removal. It covers 2002 to 2005 and uses the 3.6-litre twin-turbo Mezger engine, which [FlatSixFinder](https://flatsixfinder.com/guides/porsche-996-buyers-guide.html) lists at 462 hp. [Autocar](https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/used-cars/used-car-buying-guide-porsche-911) gives 456 bhp and calls it the rare version.

It is a 996 Turbo with more boost and none of the electronic safety nets. [Porsche Club GB](https://www.porscheclubgb.com/regions-registers/registers/classic/996/porsche-911-(996)-buyers-guide) describes the result as the GT3's raw chassis with extreme turbo power. FlatSixFinder is blunt that the GT2 is not for inexperienced drivers.

[CarsCounsel](https://carscounsel.com/porsche-996-years-to-avoid/) counts the Mezger-engined cars among the most reliable 996s. [Hagerty](https://www.hagerty.com/media/market-trends/your-handy-porsche-996-buyers-guide/) says maintenance on the related Turbo and GT3 can be costly because so much needs the engine out. Our page of [every 996 GT2 for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-911-996-gt2) shows what is listed now.

## 996 years and versions

We track one version here, the GT2. It tops the Mezger-engined range of GT3, Turbo and GT2, according to Autocar. [Carsniffer](https://www.carsniffer.com/buyers-guides/cars/porsche/911-996/) gives the engine designation as M96.70, and FlatSixFinder says it descends from the 911 GT1 race car and has dry-sump lubrication.

Elsewhere in the 996 range, Hagerty notes that the 2002 facelift swapped the 3.4-litre engine for a 3.6 and replaced the fried-egg headlights with teardrop units. The GT2 is listed for 2002 to 2005 and has its own Mezger engine, so those changes tell you little about it.

CarsCounsel calls any 2001 through 2005 Turbo or GT model the best enthusiast choice. No source we read ranks one GT2 model year above another. Let the DME printout and the service record decide, since the year will not.

Porsche Club GB says the GT2 demands expert driving skills, being very fast and able to catch you out when you least expect it. If that is more car than you want, our [911 (997) buying guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/porsche/911-997) covers the next generation.

## Common 996 problems

Several faults sources link to 996 engines are reported as absent on Mezger cars, and a few other things are worth watching.

### IMS bearing absent

The Mezger engine has no IMS bearing at all, which removes a failure risk found on the standard M96 cars. Porsche Club GB adds that rear main seal and bore scoring problems have not touched Mezger-engined 996s.

### Coolant pipe bond failure

Hagerty says the factory bonded the coolant pipes together on Turbo and GT3 models, and under hard use the bond can let go, sending coolant out at extreme pressure. The cure is to pin or weld the pipes. The source names the Turbo and GT3, so ask a specialist whether a GT2 has the same pipes.

### Radiator rot

Mud and leaves packed into the front air intakes will rot out the radiators, Magneto warns. Rusty brown or murky coolant points to a neglected cooling system.

### Costly access

Hagerty calls Turbo and GT3 models shockingly reliable, yet many items need the engine out to reach them. Each job can be a big one.

### Clutch wear

Carsniffer says clutches on the 996 last about 50,000 miles. Test take-up and slip on any GT2 you view.

## What to check on a used 996

Porsche Club GB, 996Value.com and FlatSixFinder all advise a specialist pre-purchase inspection on a 996, and that applies to a GT2 too.

- Ask for a DME printout and read the over-rev ranges and stored faults before anything else.
- A solid service history, ideally with annual services, is the minimum; find out what was done and by whom.
- Take the undertrays off and look for oil and coolant leaks.
- Examine the coolant, since rusty brown or murky fluid suggests neglect.
- Ask whether the coolant pipes have been pinned or welded, and get the invoice.
- Look into the front air intakes for packed mud and leaves, then inspect the radiators behind them.
- Test the clutch and gearbox cold and hot, noting the take-up point, slip under load and synchro behavior.
- Brake discs should be free of rust and warping, with no shaking or pulling under braking.
- Look under the car for a misshapen floorpan, and over the bodywork for dents and repair, both signs of accident damage.
- Read the sticker under the front lid and match its option codes to the car as described.

## 996 running costs

The cost figures we found mostly cover ordinary 996s and Turbo models, not the GT2. [Hagerty's 996 buying guide](https://www.hagerty.co.uk/articles/buying-guides/buying-guide-porsche-911-996-1997-to-2004/) suggests £1,500 to £2,000 a year for servicing and repairs on a regular car, a UK figure. It also calls the Turbo complex and costly to run, and warns that an example two decades old could turn into a serious money pit.

Carsniffer puts a clutch replacement at $2,000 to $3,000, and says a set of tires can top $1,000 on cars with 18-inch wheels. Rear tires, it says, last only about 10,000 miles. Brake fluid should be flushed every two years, per FlatSixFinder.

Magneto says the rear main seal itself is cheap but hard to reach, so the labor is the expense. Hagerty says engine removal for access is what pushes up maintenance bills on Turbo and GT3 models.

## 996 recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists three recall campaigns for 1999 to 2004 cars. Two cover the 2001 911 Turbo: a fuel line that could leak from chafing against the intake manifold or a clamp, and a clutch pressure line that could leak at the clutch cylinder on manual cars. The third, on 1999 to 2000 911 and 911 Carrera models, concerns incorrect programming of the electronic logic unit that gives a wrong fuel level. None names the GT2, but check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 164 complaints with NHTSA across these years, 88 of them about the engine and 29 about engine and engine cooling. Those reports cover every 996, and the GT2 is just one of them.

## NHTSA recalls for the 996

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 1999 to 2004 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 01V016000 | Jan 23, 2001 | 2001 | Fuel system, gasoline | THE LEAKING FUEL COULD COME INTO CONTACT WITH THE EXHAUST SYSTEM, INCREASING THE RISK OF A FIRE. |
| 01V015000 | Jan 23, 2001 | 2001 | Power train | A REDUCTION, OR COMPLETE LOSS, OF THE CLUTCH AND STEERING POWER ASSISTANCE COULD RESULT. IF LEAKING FLUID CONTACTS THE EXHAUST SYSTEM, THERE IS A RISK OF FIRE. |
| 00V109000 | Apr 10, 2000 | 1999 to 2000 | Fuel system, gasoline | THE VEHICLE COULD RUN OUT OF FUEL CAUSING A LOSS OF POWER. |

## Owner complaints to NHTSA about the 996

Owners filed 164 complaints with NHTSA for the 1999 to 2004 model years (10 crashes and 2 fires reported). A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

| Component | Complaints |
| --- | --- |
| Engine | 88 |
| Engine and engine cooling | 29 |
| Air bags | 16 |
| Power train | 13 |
| Electrical system | 8 |

## Our verdict

Buy a GT2 if you can handle a rear-drive turbo car with no electronic aids and can pay for engine-out maintenance. The Mezger engine carries no IMS bearing, and CarsCounsel says the Turbo-engined and GT cars have a significantly lower risk of catastrophic engine failure than the rest of the 996 range. FlatSixFinder's label for the car is the ultimate widowmaker. Check our [Porsche 911 price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/porsche/911) for the wider market before you view one.

Insist on a readable DME printout, a documented service record and proof the cooling system has been looked after. ## 996: common questions

### What is the best 996 to buy?

CarsCounsel rates any 2001 through 2005 Turbo or GT model as the best enthusiast choice, and the GT2 is the most extreme of them. It has the Mezger engine and is not for inexperienced drivers. Pick on condition and service history, since the sources do not favor one model year.

### What goes wrong with the 996?

The sources name no GT2-specific fault, but a few things need checking. Hagerty says the Turbo and GT3 coolant pipe bond can fail under hard use, and Carsniffer says 996 clutches last about 50,000 miles. Access is the other burden, because many jobs need the engine out.

### Is the 996 reliable?

Mostly yes, by 996 standards. Hagerty says the Mezger engine earned a reputation as one of the most bulletproof Porsche engines. Maintenance is still expensive because many jobs need engine removal.

### How much does it cost to run a 996?

Expect high bills. Hagerty puts a regular 996 at £1,500 to £2,000 a year for servicing and repairs, and Carsniffer quotes $2,000 to $3,000 for a clutch. Hagerty also says the related Turbo is complicated and expensive to run.

### How much is a used 996?

Asking prices for the 6 cars we track for sale right now run from $325,699 to $500,558, with a median of $394,995. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the 996 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 3 recall campaigns filed for the 1999 to 2004 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for fuel system, gasoline. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
