The 958 Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S are fast, well-equipped V8 SUVs, but 2011 cars need their recall paperwork and every V8 needs cooling, chain and transfer case history.

## The 958 Cayenne as a used buy

The 958 Cayenne Turbo is a V8 SUV whose 2011 cars carry a recall for aluminum cam adjuster bolts that can shear, and one 2011 Turbo repair bill came to $35,199. The second-generation Cayenne ran from 2011 to 2018.

It split into the 958.1 (2011 to 2014) and the facelifted 958.2 (2015 to 2018). Against its predecessor it uses more aluminum and has no low-range transfer case, a change that saved 400 lbs. From 2011 every version came with an 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic.

The Turbo suits a buyer who wants a very fast V8 SUV and can afford specialist upkeep. [pcarwise.com](https://www.pcarwise.com/local-help/used-porsche-buyers-guide/porsche-cayenne-buying-guides/porsche-cayenne-buyers-guide-11-thru-18/) calls the 958 rewarding and dependable but says the maintenance is expensive and must be done on time, and [PistonHeads](https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-buying-guides/porsche-cayenne--958----ph-used-buying-guide/42634) agrees that most of the original mechanical problems were resolved. [CarScout](https://usecarscout.com/blog/used-porsche-cayenne-2nd-gen-958-buying-guide) is blunter: the Turbo is spectacular to drive and just as spectacular to own at high mileage. Browse [used Cayenne Turbos for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/porsche/cayenne/turbo) with that in mind.

## 958 Cayenne years and versions

The 958.1 Turbo has a 4.8L twin-turbo V8 making 500 hp. The facelift for 2015 raised that to 520 hp and added LED headlights, updated infotainment, revised bodywork and active cooling flaps. The S and GTS moved to a 3.6L twin-turbo V6 at the same time, while the Turbo and Turbo S kept the V8. We track four versions: the [958 Turbo](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-cayenne-gen-ii-turbo-pre-facelift), the [facelift Turbo](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-cayenne-gen-ii-turbo-facelift), the [Turbo S](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-cayenne-gen-ii-turbo-s-pre-facelift) and the [facelift Turbo S](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-cayenne-gen-ii-turbo-s-facelift).

The Turbo S tops the range at 550 to 570 hp, depending on the year. Stuttcars quotes the 2016 car at 570 hp and 0-60 in 3.8 seconds, with ceramic brakes and PDCC. Both Turbos come with air suspension, PASM and torque vectoring as standard, plus heated front and rear seats.

[Carsniffer](https://www.carsniffer.com/buyers-guides/cars/porsche/cayenne-92a/) lists PDCC as an option that cuts body roll dramatically. Autocar recommends air suspension for the way it tightens the car up in corners, and both Turbos already have it.

A 2011 Turbo is the one to check hardest, because the cam bolt recall and the oil separator campaign both apply to it (details below). The hybrid 958s are another matter: pcarwise.com calls them a significant financial risk used and advises avoiding them.

## Common 958 Cayenne problems

The V8 and the drivetrain carry the serious risks.

### Cam adjuster bolt failure

Early 2011 V8s used aluminum Variocam adjuster bolts that can shear, stalling the engine and removing brake assist. In the worst case the answer is a new engine. Porsche recalled 2011 Cayenne S and Turbo models to fit steel bolts.

### Oil separator on 2011 Turbos

A defective air oil separator made 2011 Turbos burn excessive oil. Workshop Campaign WC-55 applies to cars under 70,000 miles.

### Coolant pipe leaks

Coolant crossover pipe joints on the 4.8L V8 can separate, letting coolant migrate and possibly enter the oil. ForPorsche adds that the coolant bridge is prone to failure too, and that the thermostat housing was redesigned after 2014, so older cars should get the new part.

### Timing chain tensioners

Four timing chains drive the V8, and their tensioners can lose pressure. A cold-start rattle is the early warning, typically at 80,000 to 120,000 miles according to CarScout.

### Transfer case failure

Gasoline cars can lose the transfer case, in some cases by 15,000 miles, and it shows as lurching under acceleration in 2nd or 3rd gear plus uneven tire wear. Moisture pulled in through a low-routed vent hose corrodes the clutch packs. Hybrid and diesel Cayennes use a different unit that appears unaffected.

### Grille shutter actuators

On the 958.2 the active grille shutter actuators can fail. Expect a check engine light and cooling fans that run after shutdown.

### Electrics and infotainment

A failing PCM 3.1 hard drive gives a reboot loop, black screen or frozen navigation. Bose amplifiers are reported to fail with a muffled popping at startup, and driver door actuators tend to break.

## What to check on a used 958 Cayenne

- Ask for paperwork proving the 2011 cam bolt recall and the oil separator campaign were done, on any car of that year.
- Inspect the coolant delivery pipes and header tank for traces of earlier leaks, especially on a Turbo.
- Request transfer case service or repair records along with the transmission service history.
- Start the engine cold and listen for a rattle from the timing chains.
- Accelerate gently in 2nd and 3rd gear and feel for lurching, then examine the tires for uneven wear.
- Watch the mirrors on a test drive for white exhaust smoke, which points to a failing turbocharger.
- Insist on a Porsche-specific OBD scan, and look for oil pressure of at least 3 bar at 5500 rpm, as ForPorsche advises.
- Check the inner edges of the wheels for buckling if the car runs ultra-low-profile tires.
- On a 958.2, cycle the PCM screen and audio from startup, and ask whether the check engine light has come on.

## 958 Cayenne running costs

CarScout puts transfer case replacement at $4,500 to $6,300 at an independent shop, while Carsniffer quotes about $4,000 at a Porsche dealer outside warranty. For the V8, CarScout gives $5,500 to $10,000 for a timing chain job and $1,500 to $3,500 for a coolant crossover pipe repair at independents.

Independent specialists can typically save 20% against dealer service, per pcarwise.com. Our [Cayenne price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/porsche/cayenne) covers what to pay.

## 958 Cayenne recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 9 recall campaigns for the 2011 to 2018 Cayenne. They include 17V368000, an engine recall for 2011 Cayenne S and Turbo; 12V329000, where the turbine wheel of a 2012 Turbo's turbocharger may fracture from a casting defect; 16V169000, covering brake pedal pivot pins that may lack a circlip on 2011 to 2016 Cayennes; and 12V065000, for headlamps that may detach from the fender on 2011 to 2012 cars. A recall covers only the cars named in its campaign, so check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 280 complaints with NHTSA, most about the power train (82) and the engine (66), along with 5 crashes, 2 fires and 5 injuries. Those are reports, not proven faults.

## Our verdict

Buy a 958.2 Turbo or Turbo S with service records that cover the transfer case. The cam bolt recall and oil separator campaign were filed for 2011 cars, and the 958.2 also has the later thermostat housing and 520 hp or more. If you take a 2011 Turbo, insist on proof of both.

Skip any car with no transfer case history or with signs of a coolant leak, since the chain, transfer case and crossover pipe repairs quoted above could all land on one V8 Turbo. Start with [used Cayennes for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/porsche/cayenne) and ask each seller what has already been replaced.

## 958 Cayenne: common questions

### What is the best 958 Cayenne to buy?

A 958.2 Turbo or Turbo S (2015 to 2018) with documented service history. It makes more power and falls outside the 2011 cam bolt recall and oil separator campaign. Ask for records on the transfer case, cooling system and timing chains.

### What goes wrong with the 958 Cayenne?

The V8 brings coolant crossover pipe leaks, timing chain tensioner wear and, on early 2011 cars, sheared cam adjuster bolts. Gasoline models can also lose the transfer case, and the PCM 3.1 hard drive and Bose amplifiers cause electrical trouble. The 958.2 adds grille shutter actuator failures.

### Is the 958 Cayenne reliable?

Mostly, according to PistonHeads and pcarwise.com, which call it dependable once the early faults were fixed. CarScout warns that Turbo ownership at high mileage is costly, and pcarwise.com says maintenance is expensive and must be timely.

### How much does it cost to run a 958 Cayenne?

Servicing aside, the known repairs are the big items. CarScout quotes $4,500 to $6,300 for a transfer case at an independent shop, $5,500 to $10,000 for V8 timing chains and $1,500 to $3,500 for a coolant crossover pipe repair. Pcarwise.com says independents can typically save 20% against a dealer.

### How much is a used 958 Cayenne?
