The 9Y0 Cayenne's main used-buy risk is a vacuum-operated water pump that fails on the V6, and sources disagree on whether the V8 Turbo escapes it.

## The 9Y0 Cayenne as a used buy

Before you look at anything else on a used 9Y0 Cayenne, ask about the water pump. [VinCanary](https://vincanary.com/porsche/cayenne/2019) and [What Breaks](https://what-breaks.com/porsche/cayenne-9ya) both describe a vacuum-operated pump that can fail and leak coolant, and What Breaks calls the V8 Turbo the pick that sidesteps the problem.

The catch is that the sources disagree. One page says the fault hits the V6 and not the V8, while another says the V8 uses the same vacuum-controlled pump and both engines are equally exposed. So a V8 is not automatically clear of it, and the service history matters either way.

The generation runs from 2019 and was redesigned from the ground up, on the VW Group's MLB Evo platform with an 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic. New that year were rear-axle steering, adaptive air suspension, PDCC and a 12.3-inch PCM touchscreen, per [Stuttcars](https://www.stuttcars.com/porsche-buyers-guides/porsche-cayenne-3rd-gen-buyers-guide/). We track the Cayenne Turbo, the Turbo GT and the facelift Turbo GT, and you can browse [used Cayennes for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/porsche/cayenne) to see what is listed.

## 9Y0 Cayenne years and versions

The 2019 lineup opened with a 335 hp 3.0L V6, the 434 hp Cayenne S and a Turbo with a twin-turbo 4.0L V8 rated at 541 hp. Stuttcars lists 568 lb-ft and a 3.7-second 0-60 time for the Turbo, which comes with torque vectoring, Sport Chrono, PASM and air suspension as standard. Current [Cayenne Turbo listings](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/porsche/cayenne/turbo) show how they are equipped.

The Coupe body and the E-Hybrid arrived for 2020, and the GTS returned for 2021 with a V8 making 453 hp. The Turbo S E-Hybrid pairs the V8 with an electric motor for 670 hp and is the fastest of the generation.

The Turbo GT gets 640 hp from a 4.0L V8 with titanium con-rods and special camshafts. What Breaks describes it as a sports car in SUV clothing, with suspension calibration Porsche otherwise reserves for sports cars. Both [Turbo GT cars for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/porsche/cayenne/turbo-gt) and the [facelift Turbo GT market](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/porsche-cayenne-gen-iii-turbo-gt-facelift) are tracked.

What Breaks also says the V8 in the Turbo and Turbo GT has a different water pump design from the V6, and calls it the sturdier engine for cooling. On options, the [Porsche Club of America](https://www.pca.org/news/top-10-options-to-look-for-in-a-2019-2023-cayenne-pca-tech-tips) rates Rear Axle Steering and the Sport Chrono Package with PSM Sport as ones to look for.

## Common 9Y0 Cayenne problems

### Vacuum water pump failure

The vacuum-operated pump can fail and leak coolant into the vacuum system, causing boost codes, power loss and overheating. Failures are reported from around 40,000 to 60,000 km. Whether the V8 shares the exposure is disputed between sources.

### Water pump bills

What Breaks quotes $1,500 to $5,000 on the V6 and $2,000 to $6,000 on the V8 and Turbo GT. Owners cited by VinCanary report $9,000 to $12,000 because the front end must come off. Porsche extended the pump warranty to 10 years, so find out whether a given car still has cover.

### Rocker arm breakage

Rocker arms on the EA825 and EA839 engines can break from about 60,000 to 100,000 km. The bill reaches 15,000 € on the V6 and $5,000 to $18,000 on the Turbo GT.

### Crankcase ventilation

If the V8's crankcase ventilation fails, oil gets pulled into the intake and the turbo bearings wear. What Breaks puts the repair at $500 to $3,000.

### Cylinder bore cracking

NHTSA records a 2021 recall for cracks that may develop on the cylinder bore surface in certain Cayenne Turbo, GTS and GTS Coupe vehicles. A recall for a model year does not mean every car of that year is affected, so a VIN check settles it.

### Battery and touchscreen

The 2019 Cayenne's 12-volt lithium battery can fail suddenly, with replacement quoted at $2,000 to $5,000. Early PCM 5.0 units from 2018 to 2022 can freeze or show a black screen, and dealer software updates usually fix that.

### Dashboard and brake squeal

Leather over the passenger airbag can bubble or lift, there is no recall, and replacement is quoted at $8,000 to $10,000. Optional PSCB brakes can squeal loudly; a service bulletin supplies an updated disc and pad kit.

### E-Hybrid battery fade

The high-voltage battery can lose meaningful capacity after 5 to 7 years, and a replacement runs $12,000 or more.

## What to check on a used 9Y0 Cayenne

- Have the cooling system pressure-tested and ask the inspector to look for coolant in the vacuum lines.
- Watch the coolant temperature gauge throughout the test drive.
- Cold-start a V6 and listen for belt squeal.
- Ask for invoices showing whether the water pump has been replaced or is covered by the extended warranty.
- Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup and ask for proof that recalls were completed.
- Ask what rocker arm or crankcase ventilation work has been done.
- Park an air-suspension car for 30 minutes and confirm it holds its level.
- Measure rotor thickness on any car with PCCB brakes.
- Get the PIWIS battery health report on an E-Hybrid before you buy.
- Cycle through the touchscreen menus for freezes or a black screen.
- Inspect the dash leather above the passenger airbag for bubbling.

## 9Y0 Cayenne running costs

Porsche specifies an oil change every 10,000 miles or 12 months, an intermediate service at 2 years or 20,000 miles and a major service at 4 years or 40,000 miles, per [Kelley Blue Book](https://www.kbb.com/porsche/cayenne/2019/maintenance-schedules/) and [PCarWise](https://www.pcarwise.com/local-help/porsche-maintenance-schedules/cayenne-maintenance/9y0-9y3-cayenne-maintenance-schedule/). PCarWise adds that the Turbo needs spark plugs at 4 years or 30,000 miles and suggests setting aside $130 per month for routine maintenance over four years.

[Car and Driver](https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a30744804/2019-porsche-cayenne-reliability-maintenance/) reports that its long-term car's 30,000-mile service with new spark plugs cost $1,003, and that three dealer visits totaled $2,677.

Front pads and rotors are due every 30,000 to 40,000 miles at $1,200 to $2,000, and PCCB replacement is $8,000 to $12,000. An air suspension compressor is $3,500, and bladder leaks are $1,200 to $2,000 per corner. Those are What Breaks figures.

## 9Y0 Cayenne recalls and complaints

[NHTSA](https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) lists 17 recall campaigns for 2019 to 2027 Cayennes, and owners have filed 119 complaints, most of them under unknown or other, then electrical system, air bags and forward collision avoidance. Complaints are reports, not proven faults.

The more serious recalls cover cracks on the cylinder bore surface (2021), a steering column screw that may fail and detach the column (2021), a rear axle trailing arm lock nut that may break (2021), a front control arm possibly installed with cracks (2024), and a fuel line quick connector that may leak (2019 to 2020 Turbo). Others cover a rearview camera that may not display and a high pressure fuel pump leak (2024 to 2026). Check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

## Our verdict

Buy the V8 Turbo or Turbo GT, since What Breaks rates it the way around the V6 pump weakness, but treat that as a lean rather than a guarantee given the source that says the V8 shares the part. A car with pump invoices or warranty cover beats a cleaner-looking one without.

VinCanary rates the 2019 model year as expensive but known, to be bought with the recalls done. Set your budget against the [Cayenne price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/porsche/cayenne), and if the car has Rear Axle Steering and Sport Chrono, the Porsche Club of America counts both in its favor.

## 9Y0 Cayenne: common questions

### What is the best 9Y0 Cayenne to buy?

The V8 Cayenne Turbo or Turbo GT is the one to find. What Breaks calls the V8 Turbo the pick that avoids the V6 water pump weakness, though another source says the V8 shares that pump, so ask for service records either way.

### What goes wrong with the 9Y0 Cayenne?
