Buying guide · 2021 on · Updated Oct 1, 2026

The second-generation Ghost is young enough that major failures are uncommon, but air springs, a flat battery and out-of-warranty bills are what to check before you buy.

## The second-generation Ghost as a used buy

Before you fall for a used second-generation Ghost, ask how it sits after a night parked and what cover Rolls-Royce says remains on it. The car arrived for the 2021 model year on the aluminum spaceframe it shares with the Phantom VIII and Cullinan, so the BMW-derived structure of the first car is gone.

The engine is a 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12, and the car has all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering. [Audi-net](https://audi-net.com/rolls-royce/) says that makes it technically closer to the Phantom and Cullinan than to the first Ghost, and warns against carrying first-generation repair assumptions over. If you are weighing it against the older car, our [first-generation Ghost guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/rolls-royce/ghost-gen-1) covers that one, and the [Cullinan guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/guides/rolls-royce/cullinan) covers the sibling it shares its structure with.

Most examples are still young. [carchecker.pro](https://www.carchecker.pro/reports/rolls_royce_ghost_mk2_6.75_v12.html) says the mechanicals are sound and major failures are uncommon, but that repair costs once the warranty has ended are extreme. So find out in writing, from the VIN, which cover is still running before you agree a price. You can start with [used Ghosts for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/rolls-royce/ghost).

## second-generation Ghost years and versions

The 2021 car brought the Planar Suspension System, which Rolls-Royce describes as having a world-first upper wishbone damper, plus a Flagbearer camera that reads the road ahead and pre-adjusts the air suspension. The look is cleaner, with an illuminated grille. The Black Badge followed in October 2021.

A Series II facelift was revealed on October 9, 2024, with an illuminated Pantheon grille treatment and revised lighting. One source dates the refresh to 2025 and another to 2024, so go by the car's documents. The Series II name was also used for the 2014 refresh of the first Ghost, so a listing that says only Series II may be a decade-old car. You can browse [Series II cars for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/used/rolls-royce/ghost-series-ii) separately.

[Marque](https://marquecars.com/journal/best-year-used-rolls-royce-ghost) says the Extended Wheelbase adds rear legroom and suits chauffeur-driven use. It also says the hand-woven fiber-optic Starlight Headliner cannot realistically be retrofitted, and that its absence is a common reason a well-specified Ghost sits unsold. Paint-to-Sample color only helps if the build documentation survives, otherwise it reads as a repaint.

Audi-net advises confirming the wheelbase, Black Badge status and original market, since specification can vary within one model name. Our [Ghost price guide](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/rolls-royce/ghost) shows how those choices show up in the market, and [every Ghost for sale](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/cars/rolls-royce-ghost-gen-ii-series-i-base) lets you compare them.

## Common second-generation Ghost problems

Most of what follows comes from carchecker.pro's reliability write-up, plus the NHTSA recall.

### Air spring leaks

A leaking air spring leaves the car low or lopsided after it has stood overnight, and technical service bulletin RR65481833 deals with ride height drops after parking. carchecker.pro says failures are less common than on the first generation, though some cases appear within 3 to 5 years.

### Compressor strain

When a slow leak goes unfixed, the air suspension compressor keeps topping the car up and can fail from the overwork. The result is a compressor bill on top of the spring repair.

### Engine oil leaks

Oil can seep from the alternator bracket gasket, the valve cover gaskets and the front timing chain cover. carchecker.pro says these tend to show up somewhere between 80,000 and 100,000 km, or six to seven years in, with some leaks starting sooner.

### Flat battery drain

The electronics keep many modules awake, and faulty comfort access door handle modules can run the battery down within days of parking. Leave the car for a week to ten days with no charger and no drive and a flat battery is the usual outcome, according to carchecker.pro.

### Wastegate actuator rattle

A worn turbo wastegate actuator rod rattles when you accelerate and again on the overrun.

### Turbo oil line coking

The N74 engine family is prone to coking in the turbo oil lines, especially when a car idles a lot or does short trips. The car's use history matters here.

### Coolant pumps

The belt-driven main coolant pump and the electric auxiliary pumps can both fail, though carchecker.pro calls that relatively uncommon in the first 5 years.

### Instrument cluster glass

Recall 23V-645 covers 2021-2023 cars because the tempered glass over the instrument cluster may break in a crash. Dealers apply a protective coating free of charge, and 1,305 units were potentially affected.

## What to check on a used second-generation Ghost

Pair a viewing with a specialist inspection, as carchecker.pro advises, covering air suspension, oil leaks, electronics and turbochargers.

- Check that the car sits level at all four corners after standing overnight, because a warm compressor can temporarily hide a leak.
- Ask whether service bulletin RR65481833 has been applied if the car has ever dropped its ride height.
- Look under the engine for oil along both valve covers, around the alternator bracket and at the front timing cover.
- Listen for a rattle from the turbos under acceleration and on the overrun, which points to a worn wastegate actuator rod.
- Find out how the car has been used, since long idling and short trips are what coke the turbo oil lines.
- Ask the seller how long the car sits between drives and whether it lives on a trickle charger.
- Test every comfort access door handle and look for electronics warnings on the dash.
- Have Rolls-Royce confirm from the VIN that recalls and service actions are complete, remembering that service action A 04 2022 04 covers comfort entry only on cars built between 28 January and 31 March 2022.
- Get Rolls-Royce to state from the VIN which factory, Service Inclusive or extended cover remains.
- Confirm the Starlight Headliner is there, and on an unusual color ask to see the Paint-to-Sample build papers.
- Match the wheelbase, Black Badge status and original market to the paperwork.

## second-generation Ghost running costs

Service Inclusive covers scheduled maintenance for the first four years, according to carchecker.pro, [Kelley Blue Book](https://www.kbb.com/rolls-royce/ghost/2026/maintenance-schedules/) and Marque. Extended warranties of two, three or five extra years are available and transfer to a later buyer, so check what remains before you buy.

carchecker.pro gives maintenance as €3,300 to €7,200 a year at 15,000 km a year. It puts valve cover gasket replacement at €4,000-5,000 at a Rolls-Royce dealer against €2,000-3,500 at an independent N74 specialist.

The same source quotes €1,500-2,000 per side for a wastegate actuator and €3,000-6,000 per side for a full turbocharger. Individual electronic modules run €500-2,000. These are European figures and a guide to scale only. For purchase prices see [what a Rolls-Royce costs](https://www.luxurycardeals.com/prices/rolls-royce).

## second-generation Ghost recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 2 recall campaigns for these model years. The one that matters, 23V-645, covers 2021-2023 Ghosts and concerns the single-layer glass over the instrument cluster, which may break in a crash. The other was filed for 2021 under seat belts by BMW of North America, and its summary covers a range of BMW models.

Owners have filed no complaints with NHTSA as of October 31, 2026. Check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before you buy.

## NHTSA recalls for the second-generation Ghost

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2021 to 2027 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 23V645000 | Sep 21, 2023 | 2021 to 2023 | Electrical system | Broken glass can increase the risk of injury in a crash. |
| 21V554000 | Jul 21, 2021 | 2021 | Seat belts | During a crash, a seat belt retractor that does not function as intended increases the risk of injury. |

## Our verdict

Buy the car with the longest remaining cover, and get Rolls-Royce to confirm from the VIN what Service Inclusive or extended warranty is left. [CarsCounsel](https://carscounsel.com/rolls-royce-ghost-best-worst-years/) says the second generation is too new to judge for long-term reliability, while Marque rates it an engineering generation ahead of earlier cars, so a specialist inspection counts for more than the car's reputation.

Skip a car that sits low after a night, drains its battery or has no build paperwork for an unusual color. Insist on a level stance after standing overnight, and on dry valve covers, alternator bracket area and front timing cover.

## second-generation Ghost: common questions

### What is the best second-generation Ghost to buy?

Buy the second-generation Ghost with the longest remaining cover, confirmed by Rolls-Royce from the VIN. Check whether a listing called Series II means the 2024 facelift or the 2014 first-generation refresh. Confirm wheelbase and Black Badge status from the paperwork.

### What goes wrong with the second-generation Ghost?

Air spring leaks, engine oil leaks and a draining battery are the main things reported. Turbo wastegate rattle and turbo oil line coking are also mentioned. Major failures are described as uncommon because the cars are young.

### Is the second-generation Ghost reliable?

Mostly, though the evidence is limited. carchecker.pro says the mechanicals are sound and major failures are uncommon, while CarsCounsel says the cars are too new to judge. NHTSA lists 2 recalls and no owner complaints.

### How much does it cost to run a second-generation Ghost?

Expect high bills once cover ends. carchecker.pro puts maintenance at €3,300 to €7,200 a year and a turbocharger at €3,000-6,000 per side. Service Inclusive covers scheduled maintenance for the first four years.

### How much is a used second-generation Ghost?

Asking prices for the 52 cars we track for sale right now run from $187,000 to $389,900, with a median of $240,742. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

### Has the second-generation Ghost been recalled?

NHTSA lists 2 recall campaigns filed for the 2021 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for electrical system. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
