## Questions and answers

### What is a good lease deal on a luxury car?

A common yardstick is the 1% rule: a lease whose real monthly cost (the payment plus the money due at signing, spread over the term) is 1% of the car's MSRP or less is a great deal. We rate offers under 1% of MSRP great, up to 1.25% good, up to 1.5% fair and above that pricey. Right now 8 of the 40 offers we could rate are great deals.

### What does due at signing include?

Usually the first month's payment, any down payment (the cap cost reduction), the leasing company's acquisition fee and sometimes a security deposit. Taxes, registration and dealer fees are usually extra. When an ad lists those amounts instead of giving a total, we add them up.

### Why is the real monthly cost higher than the advertised payment?

Because most ads ask for money at signing. A $499 lease with $4,999 due at signing over 36 months really costs about $624 a month: ($4,999 + 35 x $499) / 36. We show that real cost on every offer so leases with different money down compare fairly.
