Alfa Romeo 4C buying guide
The 4C rewards a buyer who checks the TCT gearbox, the front suspension joints and the service record, and who wants a raw weekend car, not a daily driver.
The 4C as a used buy
The Alfa Romeo 4C is a carbon-tubbed, rear-drive two-seater with a 1.75-litre turbo four and a dual-clutch gearbox, and the gearbox is the part to scrutinize before you buy. Rush Magazine calls the powertrain tough, with most known issues coming from heat management and occasional gearbox quirks.
The car was shown as a concept at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and went into production in 2013. The Spider arrived in 2015 and the model ended in 2020. Our guide covers the 2015 to 2020 model years sold here, in Coupe, Spider and Launch Edition form.
It suits someone who wants a raw, connected car and has another vehicle for daily use, which is how CarWizz frames it. There is no manual and no adaptive damping, so what you see is what you get. You can browse used 4C listings to see what is out there, or check the 4C price guide and used Alfa Romeo listings.
4C years and versions
The 4C has a 240bhp 1.75-litre turbo four and a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, with 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds. The carbon monocoque weighs just 65kg. The Coupe came first. The Spider has a removable fabric roof and weighs an extra 45kg from structural reinforcement, and is otherwise mechanically the same. It also gets leather, adjustable seats and more noise suppression as standard. See the Coupe and Spider pages for each one's listings.
A 2016 update brought new dampers, revised spring rates, extra soundproofing and optional touchscreen and rear parking sensors. 24 Car Repair names the 2017 Coupe and the 2019 and 2020 Spider as the best years, and says post-2016 cars gain from revised suspension geometry. That is one publication's opinion, so weigh it with a specialist's inspection.
The Launch Edition was sold from the start with larger 18/19in wheels, the firmer suspension, extra carbon trim and special finishes such as Rosso Alfa and Carrara White. Race mode, which switches off stability control and sharpens the gearbox logic, is on Launch Edition cars and later. Rush Magazine adds that the Launch Edition's bushings and ball joints take a particular beating.
A run of 50 50th Anniversary Spiders was built in 2016 for the UK only, so you are unlikely to see one here. Cars with the sports exhaust are identified by two rings per exit instead of one.

Common 4C problems
These are the faults the sources describe, starting with the gearbox, which one source calls the most-cited buying issue.
TCT gearbox behavior
The dual-clutch gearbox can hesitate when cold, jerk at low speed and wear its clutch. Rush Magazine, CarChecker and Quelle Occasion all describe calibration issues that a software update can usually cure. Quelle Occasion names the gearbox as the most-cited buying issue.
Front ball joint corrosion
The rubber seal on the front lower ball joint can let water in, causing corrosion, creaking and clunking. CarChecker says 2013-2015 cars are more susceptible and that a revised part fits earlier cars. Rush Magazine says early joints were redesigned and should no longer be an issue.
Suspension bush wear
Bushings and ball joints take a beating, and the car is highly sensitive to tire pressures and alignment. Quelle Occasion lists bush wear alongside the gearbox as a leading concern.
Turbo oil leaks
Early cars suffered oil leaks at the turbocharger oil feed. Rush Magazine says fixing a failed line or seal costs under £500.
Heat soak
Sustained hard use can push intake temperatures high enough for the ECU to retard timing. Keep it in mind if the car has been tracked.
Exhaust valve rattle
Cars with the race or Akrapovic exhaust can rattle at the exhaust valve. Rush Magazine calls it mostly cosmetic but annoying.
Dashboard delamination
CarChecker calls dashboard delamination cosmetic but universal, so expect to see it and use it as a bargaining point, not a reason to walk.
Vague steering
The steering has almost no caster trail, tramlines readily and gives little feedback. That is how the car is built, so drive one before you commit.
What to check on a used 4C
Bring an Alfa Romeo specialist if you can, as Quelle Occasion advises.
- Ask for a service history, ideally annual rather than mileage-based.
- Check the front and rear subframe bolts for a record of torque checks, which Alfa recommends every two years and some specialists do annually.
- Drive the car in stop-and-go traffic and watch for harsh engagement, delayed shifts or juddering from the gearbox.
- Ask whether the gearbox software has been updated, since calibration problems are usually fixed that way.
- Look for staining around the turbo housing and for smoke at startup.
- Listen at the front end for creaks and clunks, and check the lower ball joint seals for corrosion, especially on 2013-2015 cars.
- Measure the battery voltage with the engine running, which should read 13.8 to 14.4V.
- Check the tire wear pattern, because the rears wear much faster than the fronts and uneven wear points to alignment trouble.
- Inspect the headlights for condensation and the turbo pipes for boost leaks.
- Test the air conditioning and note the state of the dashboard surface.
4C running costs
Rush Magazine puts an annual service at about £250 to £400 and a major service at about £600 to £900, all UK figures. It says Alfa suggests changing the cambelt every 72,000 miles or five years, though most specialists want it every four years, and one charges £650 for the job. Real-world fuel economy typically falls between 28 and 34mpg.
Suspension setup is a recurring cost. The same source quotes around £300 for a geometry setup and £600 to £1,000 for a full bushing and ball joint refresh. A gearbox software update typically runs £100 to £150, while a control module failure is rare but costs over £4,000. One specialist quotes £2,395 including VAT and labor for a full clutch replacement.
CarChecker figures a road car's clutch lasts about 150,000 km, while a tracked or tuned car may need one by 50,000 km. It puts a full gearbox replacement at roughly €4,000 to €5,000, a European figure.
4C recalls and complaints
NHTSA holds no recall campaigns for the 4C across the 2015 to 2020 model years. Check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup anyway, as records can change.
Owners have filed one complaint with NHTSA, about the engine, and it involved a fire. No crashes, injuries or deaths are recorded. A single report is not a pattern, but ask about the engine bay history.
Owner complaints to NHTSA about the 4C
Owners filed 1 complaint with NHTSA for the 2015 to 2020 model years (1 fire reported). A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

Our verdict
Look for a 2017 Coupe or a 2019 or 2020 Spider, the years 24 Car Repair rates best, as post-2016 cars have revised suspension geometry. The Spider adds weight and comfort, and the Coupe is the lighter car. Skip an early car with no record of ball joint work and no gearbox software history.
Insist on a pre-purchase inspection by an Alfa specialist, a documented annual service history, a smooth gearbox in traffic and a recent cambelt. Then price in a geometry setup (see the best used sports cars for alternatives), because the 4C is fussy about alignment and tire pressures.

Is the 4C reliable?
Mostly, yes. Rush Magazine calls the 4C reliable for a carbon-tubbed sports car and the powertrain tough, with issues tied to heat and gearbox quirks. NHTSA lists no recalls for 2015 to 2020, though a specialist inspection is still advised.
How much does it cost to run a 4C?
Rush Magazine puts an annual service at about £250 to £400 and a major service at £600 to £900. A cambelt service is about £650 at one specialist, and a full clutch replacement is quoted at £2,395. Real-world economy is typically 28 to 34mpg.
