Trade-in value
What’s your car worth to a dealer?
Enter the VIN. We price your car against comparable listings of the same model and year, adjusted to your miles, then work back to the range a dealer is likely to offer.
- The retail range dealers ask for cars like yours
- The trade-in range they work back to
- The closest comparable cars, side by side

How it works
From the VIN to a number you can use.
-
01
We read the VIN
The year, make, model and trim come from the VIN itself, so the comparison starts with the right car.
-
02
We find comparable cars
Dealer listings of the same model and year, closest trim first. Each asking price is adjusted to your mileage, and outliers are dropped.

03
We work back to a trade-in
The middle of those prices, the 40th to 60th percentile, is the retail range. Take 20% off for reconditioning, holding costs and dealer margin, and you have the trade-in range.
Questions
Before you trade it in
Is this a trade-in offer?
No. It’s an estimate from what comparable cars are listed for. A dealer will inspect the car, and its condition, history and options can move the offer up or down.
Why do I need an account?
Valuations are free with an account: you can value one car a month. Premium members value as many cars as they like and see the VIN, dealer and listing link for every comparable car.
Where do the comparable cars come from?
From the dealer listings we track for luxury and exotic cars. For a model we don’t track yet, we run a live search of dealer listings for that model year.
What does the confidence rating mean?
It reflects how many comparable cars we found and how closely their prices agree. With only a few comparables, or prices that are far apart, treat the range as a rough guide.
