Cadillac CT5-V and CT5-V Blackwing buying guide

The CT5-V and V8 Blackwing share a body but little else; the used buy hinges on one early Blackwing engine failure, door handle pads and tires.

The CT5-V as a used buy

The Cadillac CT5-V comes in two very different forms, and the used buyer's first job is deciding which. The base car has a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with 360 hp and 405 lb-ft, according to CarMax. The Blackwing has a 668-hp supercharged 6.2-liter V8, rear-wheel drive and, as standard, a 6-speed manual, per J.D. Power.

Most of what is written about problems covers the 2022 model year, so that is where the evidence is. Our NHTSA check, covering 2022 to 2027, found no recall campaigns, while sources on the 2022 car mention door handle pads and an early Blackwing engine failure.

Either car suits someone who will take the pre-purchase inspection seriously, and our used CT5-V listings show what is on offer. The sample of reports is small, and the sources say so.

CT5-V years and versions

The 2022 CT5 range, per J.D. Power, also includes a 237-hp 2.0-liter turbo four and V6 models with 335 and 360 hp. The CT5-V is the 360-hp V6 car. The Blackwing is the V8, and it has launch control, Magnetic Ride Control, a selectable V drive mode and an electronic limited-slip rear differential.

Against the base CT5-V, CarMax lists the Blackwing as adding front seat heaters, ventilated seats, parking sensors, leather, a heated steering wheel and the manual gearbox. Its Brembo brakes are 15.7-inch discs at the front and 14.6-inch at the rear, with 6-piston front calipers. MotorTrend found the Blackwing's carbon brakes held up well after repeated stops from triple-digit speeds, though the pedal felt firm.

Model year matters mostly on the base side. Kestrel says a 2022 is preferable to a 2020 or 2021 CT5 because it avoids the ten-speed transmission recall, which stops at the 2021 model year. For the Blackwing, the sources we have don't separate one year from another.

Common CT5-V problems

The record is thin, so treat these as things to check rather than a pattern.

Blackwing engine failure

Car and Driver lost cylinder number six on its Blackwing test car early in its life, during hard use. The engine showed melted piston edges and deeply scored bores, and only the even cylinder bank overheated. GM's teardown found no cause, and GM says it was the first and only failure of its type in the supercharged LT4. The engine was replaced under warranty over a six-week dealer stop.

Break-in rules

Car and Driver's test car came with a 1500-mile break-in protocol: no more than 4000 rpm and no full throttle. A used Blackwing with a short history should have its early life explained, so ask how it was run in.

Door handle touch pads

Kestrel reports that the outside touch pads quit, typically on a single door, with some cars as low as 30,000 miles. The door then will not open from outside, and owners resorted to pressing a particular corner or pressing repeatedly. Repair is estimated at $400 to $900 per door.

Airbag warnings

Owners' airbag complaints for the 2022 CT5 included a Service Restraint System message, with an airbag sensor needing replacement. A recall for roof rail side-curtain airbags that may have been installed incorrectly also covers the CT4 and CT5.

Daytime running lights

A recall for 2020-2023 CT4 and CT5 models covers daytime running lights that may not switch off when they should. The fix is a body control module software reflash.

Small Blackwing niggles

The Car and Driver Blackwing had a frayed steering wheel stitch, creaking carbon-fiber-backed seats and an occasional grind on a gentle six-five downshift. All minor, but the downshift is worth testing on any manual car.

What to check on a used CT5-V

Use the viewing to cover the points owners and testers raise.

  • Test every door handle from outside, on all four doors, more than once.
  • Run the VIN at NHTSA's lookup and confirm that any recalls were completed, and use the CT5-V price guide to see what cars are listed for.
  • Ask for dealer service records showing software updates were applied.
  • Drive the car from cold and watch for shudder or jerk between gears at 40-65 mph.
  • Check at night that the front daytime running lights do not stay at full brightness once the headlights are on.
  • Look at the inner shoulders of the summer tires for uneven wear, and see every CT5-V for sale to compare cars.
  • Inspect the wheels, airbag system and structure for signs of damage or repair.
  • Read the dash for a Service Restraint System message.
  • On a Blackwing manual, make a gentle six-five downshift and listen for a grind.
  • Ask how the engine was run in, and whether any engine work was done under warranty; Blackwing listings show what is for sale.

CT5-V running costs

Car and Driver ran its Blackwing's oil changes at roughly 7500-mile intervals using the oil-life monitor. Nine quarts of 0W-40 Mobil 1 typically cost about $180. The cabin air filter and non-OEM wipers added smaller bills, with the wipers needing replacement every 15,000 miles. Kelley Blue Book lists tire rotation and oil changes at 7,500-mile intervals.

Tires are the line to watch. The factory Michelin summers lasted 15,000 miles on the Blackwing, fronts first, and Cadillac-spec tires and winter tires in the stock sizes were hard to find. Kestrel puts a door handle repair at $400 to $900 per door.

CT5-V recalls and complaints

Our NHTSA check, covering 2022 to 2027 model years, found no recall campaigns filed for the CT5-V. Kestrel and VinSpectorAI do mention two recalls for the 2022 CT5 (side-curtain airbags and daytime running lights), so check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 23 complaints with NHTSA, with four crashes, two injuries and no fires or deaths reported. Forward collision avoidance leads with 6, then service brakes with 4, then air bags, electrical system and structure with 3 each. These are reports, not proven faults.

Owner complaints to NHTSA about the CT5-V

Owners filed 23 complaints with NHTSA for the 2022 to 2027 model years (4 crashes reported). A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

Our verdict

Find a 2022 with dealer service records, and have a specialist inspect it; the cheapest CT5-V listings and used Cadillacs are places to start. VinSpectorAI calls the 2022 CT5 worth considering if well maintained, but says the low complaint count limits what it can say about reliability. A pre-purchase inspection is essential.

On a Blackwing, ask about engine history and run-in. On any CT5-V, insist on working door handles and completed recalls, and budget for tires.

CT5-V: common questions

What is the best CT5-V to buy?

A 2022 with dealer service records is a sensible place to start. Kestrel prefers a 2022 over a 2020 or 2021 CT5 because it avoids the ten-speed transmission recall. The Blackwing adds the V8 and manual; the base car has the 360-hp V6.

What goes wrong with the CT5-V?

Door handle touch pads are the best-documented complaint, failing at mileages as low as 30,000. Car and Driver also had an early engine failure in its Blackwing test car, which GM called a one-off. Airbag warnings and daytime running light behavior show up in owner reports and recalls.

Is the CT5-V reliable?

The evidence is too thin to say. VinSpectorAI notes the 2022 CT5's low complaint count limits reliability insights, while NHTSA itself holds 23 owner complaints for the CT5-V. Treat a pre-purchase inspection as essential.

How much does it cost to run a CT5-V?

Expect oil changes at about 7,500-mile intervals, with nine quarts of 0W-40 around $180 per Car and Driver. Its Blackwing's summer tires lasted 15,000 miles. Kestrel estimates door handle repairs at $400 to $900 per door.

How much is a used CT5-V?

Asking prices for the 175 cars we track for sale right now run from $29,174 to $180,399, with a median of $56,309. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the CT5-V been recalled?

NHTSA lists no recall campaigns from the carmaker for the 2022 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026. Check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you buy.
