Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (sixth generation) buying guide
The sixth-generation Camaro ZL1 is a 650 hp supercharged coupe or convertible whose weak points are a worn supercharger coupler, track abuse and a few recalls to verify.
The Camaro ZL1 as a used buy
A Camaro ZL1 near 30,000 miles with no record of a supercharger coupler repair deserves a hard question before you drive it. Track use is the other thing that decides whether a 2017 to 2024 car is worth buying.
Underneath sits GM's Alpha architecture, which Cadillac also used for the ATS and CTS. A supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 makes 650 hp and 650 lb-ft, and Chevrolet claimed 198 mph for the coupe. Buyers chose between a Tremec 6-speed manual and a 10-speed automatic, in coupe or convertible form. Topspeed.com gives 3.5 seconds to 60 mph and 11.3 seconds in the quarter mile.
The ZL1 suits someone who wants a very fast car that can still be driven every day. Visibility is poor, the rear seat is cramped and fuel use is heavy (14 mpg city and 20 highway with the manual, premium only). Scan used Camaros for sale for cars close to the 30,000-mile mark and ask each seller about the coupler, or see every Camaro ZL1 Coupe on the market.
Camaro ZL1 years and versions
The ZL1 arrived for 2017, and the Camaro ended with the 2024 model year. The final run included a ZL1 Collector's Edition coupe with Panther-themed graphics, announced as a limited run of 350 units for the U.S. Octane Files warns that only a window sticker separates a real Collector Edition from a repaint.
The big choice is the 1LE Track Package, which is coupe only. It adds Multimatic DSSV dampers, 19-inch forged wheels, a carbon rear wing, front dive planes, a wider splitter, and stiffer springs and bushings. Motogallery lists Nürburgring laps of 7:16.04 for the 1LE and 7:29.60 for the standard car. Topspeed.com puts the package at $7,500.
Motogallery reckons the 1LE earns its place on track, while the standard car's Magnetic Ride Control dampers and 20-inch wheels are more forgiving on the street. The same source says convertibles cannot be had with the 1LE and are less sought for track use, and that low-mile manual coupes and well-kept 1LEs command a premium. Buy real 1LE hardware, not 1LE stripes.
For a street car, the standard coupe is the logical pick. Our Camaro price guide shows where each version sits.

Common Camaro ZL1 problems
Supercharger coupler wear
UseCarScout says the coupler typically gives out around 30,000 miles. The supercharger sounds different and boost fades slowly. The part runs about $800, but the supercharger has to come off, so the shop bill reaches $2,000 to $3,000.
Heat soak on track
After 10 to 15 minutes of sustained track use the heat exchanger is saturated, and the 10-speed automatic can drop into thermal protection mode. Owners who track their cars set aside $3,000 to $5,000 for cooling upgrades to the exchanger and the transmission, according to UseCarScout.
Machining debris in the engine
Modelyearmatters reports a repair program for certain LT4 6.2L cars that may have machining debris left inside the engine, with dealers replacing the engine. Ask whether a car you are viewing was part of it.
10-speed transmission recall
Recall 25V148000 covers certain 2020 to 2022 Camaros with the 10-speed automatic. A transmission control module issue can damage the transmission internally and lock the wheels. The 8-speed shudder seen on 2016 to 2018 cars is not blamed on the ZL1's 10-speed.
Power steering assist
Certain 2017 and 2018 Camaros were recalled because the electric power steering assist may fail. Have completion of the recall verified for any early car.
Brakes, tires and diffs
Motogallery says the Goodyear tires, pads and rotors go quickly when a car is driven hard. Rear differential leaks, and groan in slow tight turns, are worth hunting for on hard-used cars.
What to check on a used Camaro ZL1
- Ask for records of the supercharger coupler repair on any car under 60,000 miles, and listen for odd supercharger noise on the test drive.
- Listen for pulley or bearing noise and inspect the supercharger belts, especially on cars that have been tracked.
- Check the cooling stack for debris and look over the front aero and undertray.
- Inspect the splitter and the Multimatic dampers on a 1LE for track damage.
- Ask for service history on the differential, transmission and brake fluid for any tracked car.
- Look for mismatched front and rear tire wear and grooved brake rotors, which point to hard driving.
- Turn slowly and tightly to check for differential groan, and look under the car for rear differential leaks.
- Demand a window sticker to confirm a 1LE or a Collector's Edition rather than trusting stripes or graphics.
- Run the car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup and ask for proof that the steering, transmission and other recalls were done.
Camaro ZL1 running costs
The LT4 takes 0W-40 full synthetic oil. UseCarScout says to check the supercharger's gear oil reservoir at every oil change and replace the oil at 60,000 miles. GM guidance, per Motogallery, calls for a differential fluid change after the first track event and a high-temp DOT 4 brake flush before track days.
Drvin.ai puts the factory Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires at $350 to $500 each. The 1LE's dampers and carbon wing are specialty parts that cost more than standard Magnetic Ride Control parts. Motogallery rates parts support for the sixth-generation Camaro as strong.
Camaro ZL1 recalls and complaints
NHTSA lists 7 recall campaigns for 2017 to 2024 Camaros. Two concern electric power steering assist that may fail, one for 2017 cars and one for 2017 and 2018. A 2020 to 2022 campaign covers transmission damage that can lock the wheels on cars with the 10-speed. In 2021, an axle shaft may lack a retaining ring and separate while driving, and a seat belt campaign was also filed. For 2020, a fuel pump may be missing a pressure regulator. The last campaign, for 2017 to 2021, involves the steering wheel emblem, which may separate when the driver air bag deploys.
A campaign for one model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Owners have filed 410 complaints with NHTSA, most about the power train (117), then steering (81), the electrical system (67) and the engine (65). Those are reports, not proven faults.

| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25V175000 | Mar 20, 2025 | 2017 to 2018 | Steering | A loss of power steering assist can require greater steering effort, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 25V148000 | Mar 6, 2025 | 2020 to 2022 | Power train | Wheel lock-up while driving increases the risk of a crash. |
| 21V211000 | Mar 25, 2021 | 2017 to 2021 | Air bags | In the event of a crash, plastic pieces of emblem may act as projectiles from deployment of the driver air bag can increase the risk of injury. |
| 21V188000 | Mar 18, 2021 | 2021 | Power train | A separated axle shaft can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. |
| 20V811000 | Dec 23, 2020 | 2021 | Seat belts | If a seat belt assembly is not properly attached to the vehicle, the seat belt may not properly restrain an occupant in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury. |
| 19V837000 | Nov 21, 2019 | 2020 | Fuel system, gasoline | Over-pressurization can crack the fuel pump and cause leaks, increasing the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source. |
| 19V086000 | Feb 7, 2019 | 2017 | Steering | Loss of power steering assist would require a higher steering effort, especially at lower speeds, which may increase the risk of a crash. |
Owner complaints to NHTSA about the Camaro ZL1
Owners filed 410 complaints with NHTSA for the 2017 to 2024 model years (34 crashes and 5 fires reported). A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

Our verdict
For the street, buy a standard ZL1 coupe whose seller can document the coupler repair and the recall work. Pick the 1LE only if you will track it, and insist on genuine 1LE parts and a window sticker. Skip convertibles if track use matters. If the cramped back seat and poor visibility put you off, look at other used sports cars or our C7 Corvette guide.
On a tracked car, ask whether the heat exchanger and transmission cooler were upgraded, since sustained laps can saturate the stock exchanger and push the 10-speed into thermal protection. On any car, get proof the coupler was replaced or budget $2,000 to $3,000 for it, plus written proof that the steering and transmission recalls were completed.

Camaro ZL1: common questions
What is the best Camaro ZL1 to buy?
For most buyers, a standard ZL1 coupe is the best choice, because its Magnetic Ride Control dampers and 20-inch wheels are more forgiving on the street. Choose a 1LE only for track use, and verify the hardware and window sticker.
What goes wrong with the Camaro ZL1?
The best-documented fault is supercharger coupler wear, typically around 30,000 miles, which changes the supercharger sound and cuts boost. Track use can saturate the heat exchanger and send the 10-speed automatic into thermal protection. NHTSA also lists recalls for steering, the 10-speed transmission and other items.
Is the Camaro ZL1 reliable?
Mostly, with caveats. The sources name a coupler that wears and cooling limits on track, plus several recalls to verify. NHTSA owner complaints are reports rather than proven faults.
How much does it cost to run a Camaro ZL1?
Expect a supercharger coupler job at $2,000 to $3,000 and tires at $350 to $500 each. Tracked cars can need a $3,000 to $5,000 cooling upgrade. Fluids matter too, including 0W-40 synthetic oil and supercharger gear oil at 60,000 miles.
How much is a used Camaro ZL1?
Asking prices for the 20 cars we track for sale right now run from $44,995 to $121,299, with a median of $66,475. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.
Has the Camaro ZL1 been recalled?
NHTSA lists 7 recall campaigns filed for the 2017 to 2024 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for steering. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
