Chevrolet Corvette (C8) buying guide

A used C8 Corvette comes down to model year and gearbox history: 2020 cars need proof of recall work, and every C8 has a dual-clutch with a set service schedule.

The C8 Corvette as a used buy

Before you look at a used C8 Corvette, pin down two things: the model year and the dual-clutch service record. First-year 2020 cars carry the most scrutiny, and every C8 has the same eight-speed gearbox with its own filter and fluid schedule. No manual was ever offered.

The engine sits behind the cabin, the body is a coupe with a removable roof panel or a hardtop convertible, and the range runs from 2020 on. The Stingray has a 6.2-liter LT2 V8 driving the rear wheels. The Z06 (2023 on) has a 5.5-liter flat-plane-crank V8 making 670 hp, and the E-Ray (2024 on) adds a front electric motor and all-wheel drive. You can browse used C8 Corvettes for sale or, for the wider picture, every used Corvette.

The 2020 cars had transmission software complaints, infotainment glitches and several recalls, so paperwork counts for more there than on any later year.

C8 Corvette years and versions

The 2020 model year was cut short by a UAW strike and a pandemic shutdown. Production began February 3, 2020, and 20,368 cars were built. ChevyRoots calls it a first-year car to be bought only with confirmed recall completion, and Autojunket says it carries the highest risk of any year.

ChevyRoots says most experienced buyers land on the 2021, which has revised DCT calibration, more consistent assembly and wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. It rates the 2022 the best year for someone keeping the car five or more years. The 2021 also brought Magnetic Ride without the Z51 package, and the 2022 added right-hand-drive cars.

The Z06 arrived for 2023, the 70th anniversary year. Squeezed says its flat-plane V8 is worth it if you want the 8,600-rpm soundtrack and track capability, though it notes the Stingray is already a supercar performer. Browse used Stingrays or used Z06s.

The E-Ray is the one to be careful with. ChevyRoots says the 2024's hybrid system has minimal long-term reliability data and calls it the most technologically complex Corvette ever built. CorvSport reports it as the shortest-lived variant, replaced for 2027. See the E-Ray coupe and E-Ray convertible pages.

Common C8 Corvette problems

The sources describe gearbox shift quality, a handful of recall items and some small-parts faults.

DCT low-speed shudder

Software updates resolved most of the hesitation and low-speed shudder that early 2020 cars could show, according to Squeezed and ChevyRoots. Some 2020 owners still find the gearbox rougher than later cars.

DCT filter and solenoids

GM asked dealers in November 2021 to return DCT filters from the 7500-mile service after reports of clogged solenoids affecting shift quality, Road & Track reports. The same piece counts 17 service bulletins on the TR9080, and a bulletin is not a recall.

Transmission control module recall

A voluntary emissions recall covers 2020 and 2021 cars whose transmission control module may wrongly clear lost-communication trouble codes. The cure is a reprogram.

Front lift faults

Leaks and sensor faults can afflict the optional front lift, and a hydraulic leak needs dealer service.

Frunk latch recalls

Two 2020 NHTSA campaigns concern the front trunk: one says the car can be driven with the lid unlatched despite warnings, the other says the release button inside may stop working after the car has been off for ten minutes. Both list an over-the-air fix.

Steering and seat belt recalls

Autojunket lists a 2020 recall (20V-761) for possible loss of power steering assist from a wiring harness routing issue. A separate 2020 recall covers a driver's seat belt retractor that may not lock in a crash.

Squeaks and infotainment

Infotainment glitches, fit and finish problems, squeaks and rattles showed up on early 2020 cars. The removable roof panel can squeak too.

What to check on a used C8 Corvette

Start with the paperwork, then the transmission and the front end.

  • Run the car's VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and ask for proof that every open campaign was completed, especially the front trunk recalls on 2020 cars.
  • Ask for DCT fluid and filter service records, because a car with no history and 25,000 miles or more is a question mark.
  • Check that the 7,500-mile filter service was done, and look for later services at 22,500 miles and its multiples.
  • Test the front lift by raising, holding and lowering it, listening for hydraulic sounds and confirming it holds position.
  • Look at the wheel arches and front splitter for stone chips, which ChevyRoots calls extremely common.
  • Inspect the underside for damage from incorrect lifting, road contact or transport.
  • Operate the removable roof or convertible top through a full cycle and listen for squeaks.
  • Ask a track-used car's owner for records, and look closely at brakes, tires and the cooling system if there are none.
  • Drive at low speed in traffic and feel for hesitation or shudder from the gearbox.
  • Confirm the frunk latches, and that a warning shows when it is unlatched.

C8 Corvette running costs

Road & Track gives the DCT schedule: filter service at 7500 miles, again at 22,500 miles and each multiple after, with a fluid change every 45,000 miles. Edmunds paid $768.71 at a dealer for the roughly 7,500-mile service, covering a filter, a quart of fluid and 2.5 hours of labor.

Over 32,000 miles, Edmunds' long-term car cost $1,283 in regular service visits and $5,041 in Michelin tires. Squeezed warns that the complex electronics and mid-engine layout can push maintenance above earlier Corvettes.

C8 Corvette recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 9 recall campaigns for the 2020 to 2027 model years. One covers rear half-shaft assemblies missing ball bearings on 2021 to 2022 cars, which can mean a loss of drive power. Another, on 2023 to 2025 cars, says excess fuel may spill into the filler pocket during refueling and reach an ignition source. Seat belt campaigns cover a 2020 driver's retractor that may not lock in a crash and 2024 to 2025 retractors that may lock in a stowed position. A recall for one model year doesn't mean every car was affected, so check each VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 130 complaints with NHTSA, most about the power train (30) and the electrical system (27). These are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict

Buy a 2021 or 2022. ChevyRoots rates both as the best used buys, and Autojunket puts the 2020 as the riskiest year. A 2020 is viable if budget decides it, and only with confirmed recall completion.

Whatever the year, ask for DCT service records, and weigh a car with no history and 25,000 miles or more as a question mark. Our Corvette price guide shows what the market asks. Treat an early E-Ray with caution, and make sure the front lift holds its height.

C8 Corvette: common questions

What is the best C8 Corvette to buy?

The 2021 and 2022 are the best used C8s, according to ChevyRoots. It rates the 2022 best for owners keeping the car five years or more. A 2020 is viable only with confirmed recall completion.

What goes wrong with the C8 Corvette?

Early 2020 cars had DCT low-speed shudder, infotainment glitches and squeaks, and software updates resolved most of the transmission trouble. The optional front lift can leak or throw sensor faults. NHTSA lists 9 recall campaigns across the model years, two of them on the 2020 front trunk.

Is the C8 Corvette reliable?

Mostly yes. Squeezed calls the C8 very reliable for a mid-engine sports car, with the engine and gearbox well proven. First-year 2020 cars carry the most risk, and the 2024 E-Ray's hybrid system has little long-term data.

How much does it cost to run a C8 Corvette?

Budget for DCT filter service at 7500 miles, 22,500 miles and each multiple after, with a fluid change every 45,000 miles. Edmunds paid $768.71 for the first service at a dealer. Its long-term car also cost $1,283 in service visits and $5,041 in tires over 32,000 miles.
