Range Rover (L460) buying guide

The L460 Range Rover is a big, complex SUV where model year, engine and recall history matter more than trim, and a warranty is worth chasing.

The L460 Range Rover as a used buy

The L460 Range Rover is a car to buy by build year. The early P530s use BMW's N63 V8, and from the 2024 model year JLR fitted the newer S68. That one change, plus a long list of recalls on 2022-2023 trucks, should steer your search. If you are weighing used Range Rovers for sale, start there.

It rides on JLR's MLA-Flex architecture and was unveiled on 26 October 2021. Compared with the L405 it grew in every direction: 53 mm in length, 63 mm in width and 35 mm in height, with the wheelbase stretched by 75 mm to 2,997 mm. It suits someone who wants the latest Range Rover and will treat warranty cover as part of the price. If you are coming from the old car, our L405 buying guide covers it.

US trucks keep a twin-speed transfer box and air suspension. All US engines use a ZF 8-speed automatic. HVAC controls moved into the Pivi Pro touchscreen in the 2023-2024 period, so try the screen before you commit.

L460 Range Rover years and versions

The two versions we track are both P530 Autobiographies, the standard wheelbase (listings) and the long-wheelbase (listings). The P530 has a BMW-sourced 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 rated at 523 hp and 553 lb-ft, with mild-hybrid assistance. BoxyTrucks reports an EPA rating of 16 mpg city and 21 highway for a 2023 P530. Other US engines are the P400, a 3.0-litre inline-six with 395 hp, and the plug-in P550e, which replaced the P440e for 2024.

Engine choice follows model year. The 2022-2023 cars have the N63, and the 2024 model year brought the S68, which also powers the SV. Forum owners, as relayed by BoxyTrucks, rate the S68 as the more refined of the two. For that reason alone a 2024 or later P530 is the one to look for, and the Autobiography pages show what is listed.

The Autobiography adds extended leather, massage seats and more seat adjustment. CarScout says that does not change reliability in any meaningful way. The long-wheelbase body adds 200 mm between the axles and is the only one with seven seats, and CarScout notes extra rear legroom. Seven-seat LWB cars are the configuration in the second-row frame weld recall on 2022-2023 trucks. Our LWB page tracks those cars.

Many early 2022 trucks left the factory with options deleted during the parts shortage, according to BoxyTrucks. Owners also find the largest wheels, the 22- and 23-inch sizes, jarring on rough pavement.

Common L460 Range Rover problems

Electrical and engine faults lead the list, and several of them are also recalls.

Cam-carrier oil channel

A blocked oil channel in the cam carrier can cause an oil leak and a fire risk. The recall covers 2022-2023 L460s, so check it was done on any early car.

DC-DC converter failure

On mild hybrids the converter between the 48V and 12V systems can fail and stop the 12-volt battery charging. The warning reads 'Stop: electrical fault' beside a red battery light, and it may clear and then return. Recalls 26V248000 and 26V599000 are interim software fixes only.

BMW V8 oil and turbos

What Breaks says the BMW V8 may show raised oil consumption and wear in the turbo oil supply. A recall also covers a turbo oil drain pipe gasket on one 2023 truck, and a cracking oil filter housing on 2024 trucks.

Pivi Pro glitches

The touchscreen freezes or goes black, and a soft reset usually clears it, per CarScout and What Breaks. The climate controls live in the screen too.

Air suspension

What Breaks calls the air suspension a cost centre, naming the ride height sensors and compressor as failure candidates.

Build quality niggles

The Weekly Driver is not the source here; What Breaks reports uneven panel gaps and wind noise on early cars. The power-deploying door handles can make noises and fail.

Rearview camera water ingress

Water can get into the rearview camera and leave the image missing or distorted. Recalls cover 2022-2023 Range Rovers, and a later one covers 2022-2026 trucks.

Plug-in hybrid issues

PHEVs can lose high-voltage battery capacity, suffer oil dilution from short runs and lose EV mode, according to What Breaks.

What to check on a used L460 Range Rover

Spend your viewing time on paperwork, electrics and the suspension.

  • Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and get written confirmation that every campaign is closed.
  • Ask whether the V8 is the N63 or the S68, since model year decides which is fitted.
  • Cycle the air suspension through its heights at standstill and listen for the compressor straining.
  • Check the car's software version, that the remote app works, and whether the 12V battery goes flat when the car is parked.
  • Compare an early truck against its original order to find deleted options.
  • Work the touchscreen, including the climate controls, and ask whether it has frozen or gone black.
  • Test the brake pedal feel and ask for brake service history, since brakes account for nearly a third of NHTSA complaints, per The Weekly Driver.
  • Operate every electric door handle several times and listen for noises.
  • Look at the rearview camera image in daylight for fogging or distortion.
  • Check the panel gaps and listen for wind noise at speed on an early car.

L460 Range Rover running costs

BoxyTrucks says servicing was set at up to 21,000 miles or 24 months, though some owners report shorter intervals on later models. We have no firm US service price to give you.

The big bill to watch is the air suspension. CarChecker.pro gives a European figure in euros for a single air strut, but the number is cut off in our source, so get a quote instead. The big wheels are a separate matter, since owners find them jarring on rough surfaces.

L460 Range Rover recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 19 recall campaigns for 2023 to 2027 L460 Range Rovers. The most serious cover body panels not bonded properly on 2024 trucks, a blocked cam carrier oil channel that can leak oil, a cracking oil filter housing, and a driver's airbag clockspring connector that may corrode and stop the airbag deploying as intended. Others cover rearview camera water ingress, a panoramic sunroof trim piece that can detach, and the DC-DC converter software fixes. A campaign for one model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 35 complaints with NHTSA, and those are reports, not proven faults. Service brakes lead with 11, then the electrical system with 8 and the engine with 7.

Our verdict

Buy a 2024 or later P530 with the S68 V8, with remaining warranty and recall work confirmed closed. What Breaks calls the L460 a defensible buy with valid warranty and a late build year, but a calculated risk without cover or in an early example. It adds that remaining or extended warranty is worth real money.

Be wary of early 2022-2023 trucks with the N63, especially out of warranty. The magazine What Car rates the D300 diesel better than the V8 for real use, though that is not a US-market engine in our data. Insist on a clean recall record and a working touchscreen before you pay anything.

L460 Range Rover: common questions

What is the best L460 Range Rover to buy?

A 2024 or later P530 with the S68 V8 and warranty remaining is the one to look for. Forum owners rate the S68 as more refined than the earlier N63. Choose the long-wheelbase body only if you need seven seats or the rear legroom.

What goes wrong with the L460 Range Rover?

Recalled items lead the list: oil leaks from a blocked cam carrier channel, DC-DC converter failure, rearview camera water ingress and an airbag clockspring connector. Owners also report Pivi Pro freezes and air suspension faults. Check that every recall is closed.

Is the L460 Range Rover reliable?

Not reliably enough to buy without cover. NHTSA lists 19 recall campaigns, and What Breaks calls the L460 a calculated risk without warranty and in an early example. A late build year with warranty is defensible.

How much does it cost to run an L460 Range Rover?

Service intervals run up to 21,000 miles or 24 months, per BoxyTrucks. The main bill to plan for is the air suspension, where CarChecker.pro quotes a European price in euros for one strut, though the figure is incomplete in our source. Ask for a firm quote before you buy.

How much is a used L460 Range Rover?

Asking prices for the 175 cars we track for sale right now run from $79,903 to $341,899, with a median of $114,796. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the L460 Range Rover been recalled?

NHTSA lists 19 recall campaigns filed for the 2023 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for back over prevention. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
