How we rate dealers

Not with reviews. Reviews of car dealers are mostly about the sales visit and the service department, and they are easy to game. We rate what a dealer controls and we can see: the prices on its cars.

For every car a dealer lists we estimate a fair value from comparable listings across the US: the same model, generation, trim, model year and miles, adjusted for accident history and owners when the listing has them. Each report card then gives the median asking price against those fair values, the share of cars listed under fair value, the cars that have had a price cut, how long cars stay listed, what history reports show and how many cars were taken down and relisted.

Across the 1,185 dealers we can rate, the typical lot is listed in line with market. The numbers update as listings change.

Dealer report cards: common questions

Where do these numbers come from?

From dealers' own listings, which we read for luxury and exotic cars across the US, and from our market model, which prices each car against comparable ones. We publish no star ratings or reviews.

Why don't you show each dealer's cars?

We do, for Premium members: every car, best deal first, with its VIN, price history and a target offer. The free pages show what each dealer sells and how it prices, without naming which car is which.
