Audi RS Q8 buying guide
The RS Q8 is a fast five-seat SUV with a long recall list: settle the 2021 engine campaign and the 48V starter generator work before anything else.
The RS Q8 as a used buy
A 2021 Audi RS Q8 may have had cracked cylinder bores, and the recall remedy is a whole new engine, so proof of that work comes before a test drive. American buyers first got the model for 2020, when it launched as a fresh design.
It suits someone who wants five seats and a twin-turbo V8 in one body. Carvana lists air suspension, all-wheel steering, active roll control and standard all-wheel drive as part of the package. The U.S. has mostly seen a single trim, so your choice comes down to model year and options. Our used RS Q8 listings show what is out there.
The engine is the EA825 4.0T V8, which it shares with the SQ8. Carshtuff rates the RS Q8 a worthwhile used buy with relatively few problems, and says Audi has recognized and recalled most of them. That says the faults were acknowledged, not that every car has had its work done, and oil consumption and intake carbon have no recall behind them.
RS Q8 years and versions
Early cars pair the original styling with a 591-horsepower V8 and 590 lb-ft through an 8-speed Tiptronic. CarScout says the engine runs a 48-volt mild hybrid system with quattro, and that it needs premium fuel. Standard kit includes sport air suspension, larger RS brakes, wider tire fitments and carbon fiber interior trim.
For 2025 Carvana says the U.S. car became the Performance, with new styling, 631 horsepower, ceramic brakes and uprated chassis hardware. That is the version to look at if you want the extra power. Our RS Q8 price guide shows how model years compare in the market.
Check the spec on any car you view. RAC Drive says the four-wheel steering and the 48V anti-roll system are standard or optional depending on trim, and that the top Vorsprung version is the one you need for both. Our tracking lists a single RS Q8 version, so confirm both systems are fitted on the particular car.
The sources disagree on model years. RerEV says to approach 2020 and 2021 most carefully because of recall burden, and rates 2022 and 2023 best. MotorHub rates 2020 and 2021 as the most reliable and recommended. Whatever the year, the 2021 engine campaign is the first thing to settle. The RS Q8 market page shows every car for sale by year.

Common RS Q8 problems
The faults below run from most to least serious, and several are already covered by recalls.
Cylinder bore cracking
NHTSA campaign 21V339 applies to certain 2021 SQ8 and RS Q8 vehicles, where cracks may form on the cylinder bore surface. CarScout says Audi's fix is a complete replacement engine, free of charge.
48V starter generator failure
On the Q8 family the belt starter generator can fail and stall the engine, and power steering and vacuum-assisted braking go with it. All 48V-equipped Q8 variants are affected, RS Q8 included.
Oil consumption
CarScout says the EA825 engine family uses more oil than average. Service history matters here, and the inspection list below says what to look for.
Air suspension faults
Air spring leaks, compressor failures and control module trouble show up as a sagging or uneven stance, reduced ride comfort and warning lights. A technical service bulletin for adaptive suspension is on file with NHTSA for 2020-2023 cars.
Carbon on the intake valves
Because the engine uses direct injection, carbon builds up on the intake valve stems. Walnut blasting is the usual cure.
Brake wear
Even the carbon-ceramic brakes can wear quickly under spirited driving, according to RerEV and MotorHub. Squeaking or grinding, a soft pedal and a burning smell after heavy braking are the signs.
Electrical glitches
Owners report frozen screens, random warning lights and parking or blind-spot sensors that misbehave. In some cases an electrical malfunction warning was followed by a full shutdown.
Software recalls
A rearview camera software error (NHTSA 25V-900) affects RS Q8 model years 2020-2026. A 2021 recall for instrument panel display failure covered 1,122 RS Q8 units, and both are fixed by a free dealer software update.
What to check on a used RS Q8
Start with the paperwork, then the engine, air suspension, brakes and electrics.
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm every campaign shows as completed.
- Confirm on any 2021 car whether the engine was replaced under the cylinder bore recall, and walk away if the campaign is open.
- Ask for proof that Service Campaign 27BQ, the belt starter generator replacement, has been done.
- Ask for service records and check the dipstick, treating the engine with extra scrutiny if oil changes ran beyond 8,000 miles.
- Listen for the air compressor cycling while the car sits at rest, and look for a sagging or uneven stance.
- Have a pre-purchase inspection look at the condition of the air springs.
- Ask whether the car has been on track days, and have the brakes inspected if the pedal feels soft.
- Test every button, screen and parking or blind-spot sensor, and watch for warning lights.
- Confirm that the car has the four-wheel steering and active roll control you expect, since they depend on trim.
- Check that the rear axle lock nut recall work was done on 2021 cars, and the seat airbag recall on 2023 builds.
RS Q8 running costs
Carlyle puts an oil and filter service every 10,000 miles at $220 to $400, using full-synthetic 0W-40. The 60,000-mile service, with V8 spark plugs and ZF 8-speed fluid and filter, runs $1,300 to $2,500. Audi's schedule, per Kelley Blue Book, is a minor service every 10,000 miles and a standard service every 20,000 miles.
Walnut blasting costs $400 to $600 at most independent Audi shops, CarScout says, and is expected every 40,000 to 60,000 miles. CarScout also budgets $1,200 to $2,000 for a set of tires (typically 285/35R22 or similar) and $800 to $1,500 for brake work, an amount it puts on top of what the SQ8 would need.
Carlyle's estimates for the big repairs: air suspension at $1,900 to $4,000 per corner and $900 to $1,700 for the compressor, typically from 60,000 to 110,000 miles. A turbocharger failure is $5,000 to $9,000, typically at 90,000 to 140,000 miles. The 48V active roll actuator is $2,000 to $4,000, and a water pump or thermostat leak is $1,300 to $2,200. RS Q8 recalls and complaints
NHTSA lists 12 recall campaigns for the RS Q8 across 2020 to 2027 model years. The most serious are the 2021 cylinder bore cracking recall, a 2023-2024 driver seat side airbag that may not be properly mounted, and seat belt buckles missing a rivet on 2025 cars. Others cover rearview camera software, instrument panel software, suspension, tires and air bags. A recall for one model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check each VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.
Owners have filed 2 complaints with NHTSA, both about the electrical system, with one also citing steering. There were no crashes, fires, injuries or deaths. These are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict
Look first at 2022 and 2023 cars, which RerEV rates best, or the 2025 Performance if you want 631 horsepower. A 2020 or 2021 car needs documented recall work, above all the engine replacement on 2021 cars. Oil consumption and intake carbon have no recall, so expect to deal with them yourself. For wider comparison see our best used luxury SUVs ranking, or browse used Audi models.
Budget for tires and brakes that cost more than on an SQ8, and a repair fund for the air suspension, since the estimates run to $4,000 per corner.

RS Q8: common questions
What is the best RS Q8 to buy?
A 2022 or 2023 RS Q8 is the best pick, since RerEV rates those years best. The 2025 refresh adds 631 horsepower and ceramic brakes. Sources disagree on 2020 and 2021, so verify the recall work on any of those.
What goes wrong with the RS Q8?
The main issues are cracked cylinder bores on 2021 cars, 48V starter generator failure, oil consumption and air suspension leaks. Brakes can wear quickly under hard use, and owners report electrical glitches. Several have recalls, but oil consumption and intake carbon do not.
Is the RS Q8 reliable?
Carshtuff says the RS Q8 has relatively few problems, but the 2021 engine recall is serious and sources disagree on the early years. Oil consumption and intake carbon are not covered by recalls. Verify the VIN and the service history.
How much does it cost to run an RS Q8?
Carlyle puts an oil service at $220 to $400 every 10,000 miles and the 60,000-mile service at $1,300 to $2,500. CarScout budgets $1,200 to $2,000 for a set of tires, and air suspension repairs run $1,900 to $4,000 per corner.
How much is a used RS Q8?
Asking prices for the 195 cars we track for sale right now run from $55,494 to $146,044, with a median of $80,075. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.
Has the RS Q8 been recalled?
NHTSA lists 12 recall campaigns filed for the 2020 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for back over prevention. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
