Audi RS 6 Avant (C8) buying guide

The C8 RS 6 Avant is a fast, practical wagon whose 48-volt electrical system and low-profile wheels deserve more scrutiny than the V8 does.

The RS 6 Avant as a used buy

The Audi RS 6 Avant (C8) reached the United States for 2021, and the thing to check first on a used one is the 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Owner discussions of the belt starter-generator describe an electrical warning, then cascading faults, and sometimes a car that will not drive.

Every normal car has a 3,996 cc twin-turbo V8 with direct injection, cylinder deactivation and that mild-hybrid system. Power goes through an eight-speed torque-converter automatic and permanent quattro. The car weighs roughly 5,000 pounds, and rear-wheel steering makes it feel smaller at parking speeds and steadier at speed.

It suits someone who wants a family wagon with a broad cargo area and a 40/20/40 split rear seat, and who accepts that it is a composed grand tourer rather than a playful sports car. Budget for performance-car running costs.

RS 6 Avant years and versions

Model years 2021 to 2023 use the original calibration of 591 hp and 590 lb-ft. Audi quoted 3.5 seconds to 60 mph. From 2024 the car is sold as the RS 6 Avant performance, with 621 hp and 627 lb-ft and a claimed 3.3 seconds.

The performance car also has a revised, lighter center differential (nominal 40:60 front/rear split, up to 70 percent forward or 85 percent rearward), faster shift logic and less insulation and trim to save weight. carmaxx.ink's inspection guide says a checked 2022 or 2023 car gives you nearly the whole experience for far less than a new one, while the 2024-up car is the sharper one. Drive rates the performance as the best fit for most buyers. Later cars also gained Bang & Olufsen audio and a 360-degree camera as standard.

Suspension matters as much as year. Drive finds standard RS air suspension the most convincing all-rounder, with a supple low-speed ride. Dynamic Ride Control cars are better tied down when pushed but lean toward the uncompromising. Cars on 21-inch wheels give more sidewall than those on 22s.

Separate from both, the 2025 RS 6 Avant GT was an 85-car U.S. run with coilovers, carbon exterior pieces and ceramic brakes as standard. Browse the two trims we track: the 4.0T quattro and the 4.0T quattro performance.

Common RS 6 Avant problems

The evidence leans toward electrical faults, with a few mechanical and equipment items behind them. If you are still searching, our used Audi listings cover the wider range.

48-volt starter-generator failures

Early ownership discussions show a meaningful cluster of belt starter-generator failures, with an electrical warning, cascading faults and sometimes loss of drivability. Some 48-volt warnings are not cured by replacing the generator, so fault codes and repair paperwork matter.

Loss of electrical power

One 2021 owner reported power vanishing at 65 mph with an 'Electric system: Malfunction' warning, the car coasting to a stop. BumperScan and VinSpectorAI both point to electrical issues as the most reported complaint area for 2021.

Engine cylinder bore cracks

BumperScan lists a recall for cracking of the cylinder bore surface in the engine of certain 2021 RS 6 Avants. Confirm by VIN that any such work was done.

Fuel level sender

Some 2021 cars were in a recall because the displayed fuel level could stay inaccurate, risking fuel starvation.

Cameras, MMI and trim

Owners report repeated rear camera failure despite dealer parts replacements, plus MMI faults, door-lock and window issues, trim rattles and driver-assistance interruptions.

Air suspension wear

Carlyle lists air suspension leaks, compressor or strut wear as a high-severity item at 60,000 to 120,000 miles.

What to check on a used RS 6 Avant

Spend your time on electronics, wheels and brakes.

  • Scan every Audi control module with a capable tool, the 48-volt system included, and walk away from a car with an active electrical warning.
  • Ask for invoices showing starter-generator diagnosis or replacement, and verify the part and software history.
  • Run the VIN through NHTSA, since a model-year recall list does not prove a given car was included.
  • Inspect every wheel on both faces and record tire brand, size, date code and tread depth, because the 21- and 22-inch low-profile wheels are vulnerable.
  • Measure pad and rotor life, and have a technician judge the condition of carbon-ceramic rotors if fitted.
  • Check for oil leaks, including the oil filter housing and upper oil pan, and look for metal debris in the oil filter.
  • Look for rodent damage to wiring, underbody rust, and signs of paint repair or panel misalignment.
  • Test every electronic function: cameras, CarPlay, both screens, climate, head-up display and both keys.
  • Watch for air suspension sagging after the car sits, and ask what has been replaced.

RS 6 Avant running costs

Carlyle lists an oil service at $200 to $400 every 5,000 miles or 12 months, and the 60,000-mile service (plugs, transmission fluid and filter, brake fluid) at $1,400 to $2,800. It puts 48-volt battery or belt-alternator-starter faults at $900 to $2,800.

Brakes are the larger worry. Steel rotors and pads are costly, ceramics far more, and carmaxx.ink calls worn or damaged ceramic rotors exceptionally expensive. Tires on the big wheels deserve a line in the budget too. Our list of luxury cars that hold value gives context on ownership costs.

RS 6 Avant recalls and complaints

NHTSA holds 3 recall campaigns for these model years. Two are filed under back over prevention (2021 to 2026 and 2022), and the 2021 to 2026 one mentions a software error that may stop the rearview camera image displaying as intended. The third covers a software error that may make the instrument panel display fail on 2021 cars. A recall filed for a model year does not mean every car was affected, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 7 complaints with NHTSA, 4 of them about the electrical system. None report crashes, fires, injuries or deaths. They are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict

Buy a performance car from 2024 on if you want the sharpest version, or a 2022 or 2023 car if you want most of the experience. Standard air suspension is the easier daily choice, and 21-inch wheels are kinder than 22s. See used RS 6 Avants for sale, the price guide and the lowest-priced listings.

Insist on a clean full-module scan, documented starter-generator history and a VIN recall check. Carchecker.pro also advises verifying the starter-generator service action and water pump status. Walk away from any car showing an active electrical warning.
