Bentley Continental GT (second generation) buying guide
The second-generation Continental GT is a fast, well-built grand tourer whose real risks are the early six-speed gearbox, air suspension and the bills that follow.
The second-generation Continental GT as a used buy
The second-generation Continental GT ran from 2012 to 2018, before a full redesign replaced it for 2019. It shares a platform with the Phaeton luxury saloon and came as a coupe or a GTC convertible, with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 or the W12.
It suits someone who wants a fast grand tourer for two people. Auto Express calls it fabulous to drive but not a scalpel-sharp sports car, and the buying decision is mostly about gearbox, suspension and how much you can spend on upkeep.
Owners quoted by CarWizz regard the engine and transmission as near-bulletproof and well built, but say running and repair costs are the real barrier. Budget for that before you look at a car, and browse used Continental GTs for sale with a specialist inspection in mind, and check the Continental GT price guide for what to pay.
second-generation Continental GT years and versions
The V8 arrived with cylinder deactivation and the eight-speed ZF from the start, developed with Audi and making 500 hp. The W12 launched with the six-speed ZF automatic, and W12 cars with the eight-speed were delivered by the end of October 2012. The W12 did not get cylinder deactivation until summer 2015, per Auto Express. The 2015 update brought new wheels and colors rather than mechanical changes.
Octane Files picks the 2014 V8 S as the best balanced car of the whole generation, with 528PS and a sportier setup. Auto Express agrees, saying its tweaked steering and suspension make it sharper than the regular V8 and the pick if you can find one. See V8 cars for sale if that is your target, or the V8 price guide.
Auto Express also says the V8 is significantly more frugal than the W12 while giving all the power and refinement most people need. CarsCounsel says the V8s tend to last better and cost less to run, while the W12 is the flagship experience. The GT Speed, also in price guide form, is the fastest W12 series, with 625PS and later 642PS, and Auto Express rates it best for equipment.
At the top, the Supersports of 2017-2018 has 710PS and 209 mph, with 710 built, and was offered as a convertible as well as a coupe. The GT3-R of 2014-2015 was built as 300 cars, 99 for the United States, with 580PS, torque vectoring and carbon-ceramic brakes. Octane Files calls both grails for collecting. Auto Express says the GTC costs a significant premium over the coupe but most of it comes back when you sell; see GTC listings and the GTC price guide.

Common second-generation Continental GT problems
The faults below are the ones the sources return to.
Six-speed gearbox
The early six-speed automatic is not so great and costly to fix, according to the sources we read, while the eight-speed is reliable. Check which gearbox a W12 has before you go any further.
Air suspension wear
The front of the car sits lower than the rear, or the suspension knocks, which can signal failure. CarChecker says struts typically start to leak somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 km, and a corner that sits lower overnight is the usual sign.
Wiring loom faults
Loom problems can cause electrical malfunctions and intermittent warnings. Exotic Car Hacks and carchecker.pro both list them.
Brake light failures
Failures are frequently reported and often need the whole unit replaced. The centre LED strip is a very common failure, the sources say.
Power window failures
They are described as common and may need a new motor or a full unit, per Exotic Car Hacks and Autoblog.nl.
Upper arm bushes
Clunking from the front over bumps can point to worn upper suspension arm bushes, typically from 60,000 km onwards, says carchecker.pro.
Battery cable recall
A loose 12V battery cable connection could overheat and cause an engine compartment fire, which led to a November 2015 recall. It covered 2012-2014 GT models and certain 2012-2015 GTC cars.
What to check on a used second-generation Continental GT
Take a specialist with diagnostic equipment, since sources say service history matters more than mileage.
- Park the car on level ground and check it sits evenly on all four corners, because one low corner points to a leaking air strut.
- Ask whether the car has stood for a long time, since one that has sunk may have an air suspension leak.
- Confirm the gearbox: ask for proof of whether a W12 has the six-speed or the eight-speed.
- Listen for knocking from the suspension and clunks from the front over bumps.
- Ask which brakes the car has, since carbon-ceramic discs cost far more to replace than steel ones.
- On a GTC, open and close the roof several times in full and inspect the seals and headlining.
- Check the electronic parking brake works properly.
- Test every power window, the brake lights including the centre LED strip, and watch for intermittent warnings.
- Ask a Bentley dealer to confirm all fire-risk recalls have been done.
- Look for a space-saver spare, which could be fitted at extra cost, since most cars only have an inflation kit.
second-generation Continental GT running costs
Auto Express warns that the bills for tyres, brakes, insurance, tax and servicing mount fast, well beyond what a mid-range BMW 3 Series costs. The car uses 275/35R21 tyres, which carchecker.pro calls costly to replace.
carchecker.pro puts replacing both air suspension struts on one axle at up to €4,000, and replacing both hydraulic engine mounts at up to €2,500. CarChecker says a full four-corner suspension replacement at a Bentley dealer can exceed €8,000. These are European figures.
Oil changes are advised at 12-month or 16,000 km intervals, and Bentley recommends replacing brake hoses every five years, per carchecker.pro and Exotic Car Hacks.
second-generation Continental GT recalls and complaints
NHTSA holds one recall campaign for these years, 15V688000, covering 2012 to 2015 Continental GT and GTC cars. It concerns the electrical system, with the same 12V battery cable fire risk described above. A campaign for a model year does not mean every car was affected, so check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.
Owners have filed 2 complaints with NHTSA, both about wheels, and one report involved a crash. These are reports, not proven faults.

Every recall campaign the carmaker filed with NHTSA for the 2012 to 2018 model years, newest first, as of Oct 31, 2026. Not every car of a listed year was affected: check a car's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
| Campaign | Reported | Model years | Component | What can happen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15V688000 | Oct 21, 2015 | 2012 to 2015 | Electrical system | A loose battery cable may overheat, increasing the risk of a fire. |
Owner complaints to NHTSA about the second-generation Continental GT
Owners filed 2 complaints with NHTSA for the 2012 to 2018 model years (1 crash reported). A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

Our verdict
Buy the 2014 V8 S if you can find one, or any V8 with the eight-speed for lower running costs. Take a GT Speed if you want the W12, and check the gearbox first. The Supersports and GT3-R are collector cars (see Supersports listings and GT3-R listings), so bring the same scrutiny to a very different budget.
Insist on a specialist inspection with diagnostics, full service history, proof the battery cable recall was done and a level stance on all four corners. CarsCounsel says no model year is free of high maintenance costs.

second-generation Continental GT: common questions
What is the best second-generation Continental GT to buy?
The 2014 V8 S is the pick of the sources we read. Octane Files picks it as the best balanced car of the generation, and Auto Express says it is sharper than the regular V8. If you want a W12, the GT Speed is the fastest series.
What goes wrong with the second-generation Continental GT?
The main faults are the early six-speed gearbox, air suspension wear and wiring loom problems. Brake lights and power windows also fail, and worn upper arm bushes cause front clunks. One battery cable recall covers fire risk.
Is the second-generation Continental GT reliable?
Mostly, but expensive to put right. Owners quoted by CarWizz call the engine and transmission near-bulletproof, and other sources rate the eight-speed gearbox reliable, but the six-speed is costly to fix and CarsCounsel says no year escapes high maintenance costs.
How much does it cost to run a second-generation Continental GT?
Expect big bills. Carchecker.pro puts both air struts on one axle at up to €4,000 and engine mounts up to €2,500, and oil changes are advised every 12 months or 16,000 km. Tyres in 275/35R21 are costly, per carchecker.pro.
How much is a used second-generation Continental GT?
Asking prices for the 142 cars we track for sale right now run from $36,867 to $205,390, with a median of $65,599. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.
Has the second-generation Continental GT been recalled?
NHTSA lists 1 recall campaign filed for the 2012 to 2018 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for electrical system. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
