Bentley Continental GT (third generation) buying guide

The third-generation Continental GT rewards a buyer who picks a 2020 or later car, has air suspension and the water pump checked, and budgets for Bentley parts prices.

The third-generation Continental GT as a used buy

Early 2020 cars carry a water pump recall for units that can let liquid onto a circuit board, and a first-year 2019 W12 is the car the sources steer you away from. The third-generation Continental GT ran from 2019 to 2024 on a platform developed with Porsche and shared with the Panamera, as a coupe and a convertible (GTC).

The W12 coupe came first, with 626 hp and an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. A V8 followed, then the Speed. The all-wheel drive system is mostly rear-driven, and in Comfort mode up to 38 per cent of drive can reach the front wheels. Both engines are chain-driven, so there are no cambelts to replace.

It suits someone who wants a fast, comfortable grand tourer and accepts the bills. Auto Express puts it bluntly: you pay for owning one. The rear seats only suit children or small adults, and neither engine returns much more than 20 mpg.

third-generation Continental GT years and versions

The W12 coupe arrived in April 2018, the convertible followed with first deliveries early the next year, and the 542 hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 joined in September 2019 as coupe or convertible. The 650 hp Speed came in March 2021 as a coupe, with the Convertible Speed revealed within a month. The Mk4 replaced the car in 2024 and dropped the W12 for a V8 hybrid. We track the Continental GT V8 Coupe, GTC V8 Convertible, GT Speed, GTC Speed and the W12 GT Coupe.

On the road, evo finds the V8 better balanced and more responsive than the W12, and calls the Speed the best-resolved Continental yet. The Speed also gets an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential.

On model years, owners quoted by CarWizz want a 2020 or later car for the improved body style over the 2019 kit. One of them recommends a 2020-2024 GTC Speed for anyone keen to keep the 12-cylinder. Marque goes further and would take a 2021 or 2022 V8 over a first-year 2019 W12, reasoning that later cars have fewer first-model-year problems and are cheaper to keep.

Options matter too. Auto Express rates the panoramic roof as worth having (it listed at £3,150) and the rotating dashboard display as the one to insist on. Carbon-ceramic brakes hold their bite better than the standard items, but replacing them costs a lot. For an older Bentley, our guides to the first generation and second generation cover those cars.

Common third-generation Continental GT problems

Water pump recall

Recall 23V-034 covers 2020 GT and GTC cars built between June 20, 2019 and July 10, 2020, where liquid can reach the water pump's circuit board and cause a short circuit and, rarely, a fire. Warning signs are climate control problems, reduced Residual Heat function and, on W12 cars, an engine management light.

Air suspension wear

A front end sitting low with a knocking noise points to worn suspension components that need replacing. Exotic Car Hacks says the air suspension can be prone to trouble, and CarWizz lists air struts among the first big items to expect at higher mileage.

Window motor ECU

A hissing noise as the windows move can mean a failing window motor ECU, and the motor unit may need replacing.

Brake light failure

The high-level brake light above the rear window can fail, and the whole unit may need replacing.

Spurious warning lights

Owners report dashboard warnings, such as check engine and tire pressure alerts, that appear without a clear cause. Have them read out and explained before you buy.

Brake wear

Brakes are one of the most significant early items on higher-mileage cars, according to CarWizz. Carbon-ceramics are the expensive case, since replacement costs are high.

Convertible roof software

A January 2021 recall covered 393 convertibles whose roof could be operated with the key from beyond six meters. A software update fixed it.

What to check on a used third-generation Continental GT

Exotic Car Hacks and CarWizz both call a pre-purchase inspection crucial, so use these checks at the viewing and to brief the inspector.

  • Book a pre-purchase inspection with an authorized dealer or an experienced independent before any money moves.
  • Ask for detailed maintenance records covering every service.
  • On a 2020 car built in the recall window, check the water pump recall status and ask to see the paperwork showing the work was done.
  • Watch how the front end sits after start-up, and listen for knocking over bumps, which suggests tired air suspension.
  • Run every window up and down several times, listening for a hiss that points to a failing motor ECU.
  • On a convertible, cycle the roof open and closed while the windows are working, and ask whether the top or its frame has ever been replaced.
  • Measure brake discs and tire wear rather than judging by eye, and get a price for replacing the carbon-ceramics if they are fitted.
  • Have a specialist look at the coolant system and the turbocharger oil-feed lines, plus the hard-to-reach ancillaries on a W12.
  • Scan the dash for warning lights, and ask for the fault codes behind any that appear.
  • Confirm the high-level brake light above the rear window works.

third-generation Continental GT running costs

Auto Express gives the Bentley service schedule as every 12 months or 10,000 miles, with the first three services costing £975, £1,295 and £1,695 (UK figures). From the fourth year, discounted minor and major services alternate at £799 and £1,199. Brake fluid every two years is £195 on its own, and coolant every five years is £215.

Parts prices are high, Auto Express warns, so a Continental is never cheap to run. CarWizz expects air struts and brakes to be the first major items at higher mileage, and says a good independent mechanic is essential. Our price guide shows the market side of ownership.

third-generation Continental GT recalls and complaints

NHTSA's records, read on October 31, 2026, list no recall campaigns for the 2019 to 2024 model years. Recall 23V-034, on the 2020 water pump, has its own NHTSA page though, so check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup rather than relying on this summary.

Owners have filed one complaint with NHTSA, tagged to the electrical system and vehicle speed control. Complaints are reports, not proven faults, and a single entry says little about the car.

Owner complaints to NHTSA about the third-generation Continental GT

Owners filed 1 complaint with NHTSA for the 2019 to 2024 model years. A complaint is an owner's report, not a confirmed defect. A complaint can name more than one component.

Our verdict

Buy a 2020 or later car, and look first at a V8 or a Speed. The V8 is the better-balanced drive, the Speed is rated the most resolved, and a first-year 2019 W12 is the one Marque steers away from. If you want the 12-cylinder, one owner points to a 2020-2024 GTC Speed.

Insist on a specialist inspection, full service records, proof that the water pump work was done on any 2020 car, and a close look at the air suspension. Auto Express notes that used examples are scarce and convertibles are rarer, so a car with a clean history is worth waiting for.

third-generation Continental GT: common questions

What is the best third-generation Continental GT to buy?

A 2021 or 2022 V8 is the pick. Marque prefers it to a first-year 2019 W12, and evo finds the V8 better balanced to drive. The Speed is the other strong choice, since evo calls it the best-resolved Continental yet.

What goes wrong with the third-generation Continental GT?

The reported faults are air suspension wear, failing window motor ECUs, a high-level brake light that can fail and spurious dashboard warnings. Recall 23V-034 covers a water pump fault on 2020 cars built between June 20, 2019 and July 10, 2020. Air struts and brakes are the main early costs at higher mileage.

Is the third-generation Continental GT reliable?

No source we read gives a general reliability verdict, so judge each car on its history. The reported faults centre on air suspension, window motors and warning lights, and the water pump recall carries a fire risk. NHTSA holds one owner complaint for these years, and a specialist inspection with full service records is the best protection.

How much does it cost to run a third-generation Continental GT?

Budget for high running costs. Auto Express gives UK service prices of £975, £1,295 and £1,695 for the first three services, then £799 and £1,199 alternating from year four. Brake fluid is £195 every two years, coolant is £215 every five years, and parts prices are high.

How much is a used third-generation Continental GT?

Asking prices for the 234 cars we track for sale right now run from $85,372 to $365,649, with a median of $197,435. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the third-generation Continental GT been recalled?

NHTSA lists no recall campaigns from the carmaker for the 2019 to 2024 model years as of Oct 31, 2026. Check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you buy.
