Ford Mustang (S650) buying guide

The S650 Mustang is a young car with a crowded recall file, so a used buy comes down to build year, version and proof that the campaigns were done.

The S650 Mustang as a used buy

The S650 Mustang is the seventh-generation car, an evolution of the S550 rear-wheel-drive platform, built from spring 2023 for the 2024 model year as a fastback coupe and a convertible. CarCaseFile says nearly every known problem is covered by a recall or warranty, which leaves a car whose recalls were never performed as the real exposure.

Our guide tracks the coupes and the Dark Horse, with used S650 Mustangs for sale listed alongside. Inside you get a 12.4-inch digital cluster, a 13.2-inch SYNC 4 screen and optional MagneRide dampers on upper trims. The screens are also where some of the software complaints sit.

NHTSA lists 18 recall campaigns for these years, and the 2024 cars carry much of the history.

S650 Mustang years and versions

The 2.3L EcoBoost makes 315 hp and 350 lb-ft, and in the US it comes only with the 10-speed automatic. The GT's 5.0L Coyote Gen 4 makes 480 hp, or 486 hp with the active valve exhaust, and takes either the 6-speed MT-82D4 manual or the 10-speed automatic. Every Coyote uses a dual-throttle-body intake, replacing the single-throttle-body S550 design. We track the GT Coupe, the GT Premium Coupe, the EcoBoost Coupe and the EcoBoost Premium Coupe separately.

The Dark Horse has a modified 5.0 making 500 hp and 418 lb-ft, with forged connecting rods where the GT uses cast ones, revised cams and a 7,500-rpm redline against 7,000. Its Tremec TR-3160 manual is seen as a significant upgrade over the GT's MT82 by CarScout, Squeezed and What-Breaks. CarScout prefers the manual for track use because the automatic's cooling circuit adds heat. See every Dark Horse for sale.

For daily use, Squeezed calls the GT Premium with the 10-speed automatic the best daily driver and the GT the better value. The 2025 60th Anniversary Package was limited to 1,965 GT coupes and convertibles. For 2026 the automatic became standard on the Dark Horse with the manual optional, and a 795 hp supercharged Dark Horse SC joined the range. The GTD is a separate low-volume car.

Common S650 Mustang problems

Cowl water leaks

Recall 25V546 covers roughly 105,000 2024-2025 cars where water gets past the cowl and windshield seams onto the body control module. It causes flickering or dead exterior lights and wet carpet, and the fix is free. The repair rolled out slowly, with the full fix pushed into early 2026.

Rear knuckle casting

Early 2024 builds were recalled (24V593000) for a defective rear suspension knuckle casting that can cause loss of handling and steering control. About 4,600 cars were affected.

Manual clutch line

On some 2024 manual cars the clutch hydraulic line can sit too close to the exhaust and melt. The clutch then fails to disengage, and brake fluid can leak with a fire risk. NHTSA's campaign 24V394000 describes the melted line and fluid leak.

Wiring harness grounds

Engine-bay harness ground connections on about 148,663 2024-2026 cars may fracture under recall 26V547, risking loss of drive power, headlights, washers, A/C or the cooling fan. Ford estimates only about 1% of those cars actually have the defect.

Digital cluster blanking

A software error can blank the digital instrument cluster while driving, covered by recall 24C35 on about 6,200 2024 cars. Some owners told Auto Reliability Index the updates did not cure it. SYNC 4 can also freeze or restart, and the rear-view camera can freeze until a software update.

10-speed shift quality

The 10R80 automatic can clunk on downshifts, especially when cold. Dealer software updates have improved many cars, and a batch of 2025 cars had a valve-body recall, 25V164.

Manual gearbox stiffness

The GT's MT-82D4 is stiff when cold, resists second gear and raises synchronizer wear concerns. Higher-rpm shift problems persist, according to the sources.

EcoBoost engine failures

A few 2.3 owners reported a misfire followed by sudden power loss, with a replacement engine as the cure, somewhere between 4,700 and 6,000 miles. CarScout saw no pattern of valve deposits on the engine, which uses port plus direct injection.

What to check on a used S650 Mustang

  • Run the VIN at NHTSA's lookup and insist every open recall was completed, with dealer paperwork.
  • Ask for proof that the rear knuckle recall was done on any 2024 car built between May 10 and August 20, 2024.
  • Press a hand into the passenger footwell carpet and sniff for damp or mustiness, which points to water at the body control module, then switch every exterior light on and watch for flicker.
  • Cycle the ignition off and on a few times, and watch that the touchscreen, the instrument display and the rear-view camera all come up completely on every start.
  • Shift a cold manual through second gear and note any stiffness or resistance.
  • Drive an automatic from cold and listen for a clunk on downshifts.
  • Scan an EcoBoost for stored misfire codes and ask whether the engine or turbo was ever replaced.
  • Ask a Dark Horse seller with track history for spark plug replacement records, then inspect the catalytic converters and rotors. CarScout's long-term car destroyed a converter on track with plug gaps set too wide.
  • Compare the front brake calipers side to side, since one car left the factory with mismatched calipers.

S650 Mustang running costs

CarScout recommends an early MT-82D4 fluid change at 5,000 to 10,000 miles, at $100 to $150 for parts and labor. It puts spark plugs on the 8-plug V8 at $100 to $150 for parts and the same again for labor.

A pair of catalytic converters costs $2,500 to $3,500 by CarScout's figures, which matters on a hard-driven car. CarCaseFile notes the 5.0 takes about 10 quarts of synthetic oil per change and wears rear tires quickly when driven hard. CarScout also says stock DOT 4 brake fluid can boil on a road course and fade the pedal.

S650 Mustang recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 18 recall campaigns for 2024 to 2027 Mustangs, and a campaign filed for a model year does not mean every car of that year was affected. The most serious involve a melting clutch pressure line on 2024 manual cars, a possible fuel leak on 2024 cars with the 2.3L engine, and fracturing wiring harness grounds that can cut drive power on 2024-2026 cars. Several 2026 campaigns concern engine internals, and a 2025 EGR valve campaign can also cut drive power. Check any car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 113 complaints with NHTSA, 48 about the electrical system and 17 about the engine. These are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict

Buy a 2025 or 2026 car if you can, or a 2024 with printed proof that every recall was done. The GT Premium with the automatic suits daily use, and if you want a manual, the Dark Horse's Tremec is the better gearbox than the GT's MT82.

Consumer Reports rates the 2024 Mustang less reliable than other cars of its year, with 12 recalls. On a track-used Dark Horse, insist on spark plug records and a look at the catalytic converters.

S650 Mustang: common questions

What is the best S650 Mustang to buy?

The GT Premium with the 10-speed automatic is the best daily choice, according to Squeezed. For a manual, the Dark Horse's Tremec gearbox is rated well above the GT's MT82. Prefer a 2025 or 2026 build, or a 2024 with every recall completed.

What goes wrong with the S650 Mustang?

Most known faults are recall items. They include water reaching the body control module through the cowl, a rear knuckle casting on early 2024 cars, a melting clutch line on 2024 manuals and fracturing wiring harness grounds. Owners also report digital cluster blanking, SYNC 4 freezes and clunky 10-speed downshifts.

Is the S650 Mustang reliable?

Not for the 2024 cars. Consumer Reports rates the 2024 Mustang less reliable than its peers, and Auto Reliability Index scores it 67/100. CarCaseFile says nearly all problems are recall or warranty covered, so a car with its recalls done is the safer bet.

How much does it cost to run an S650 Mustang?

CarScout gives $100 to $150 for an early manual gearbox fluid change and $2,500 to $3,500 for a pair of catalytic converters. Spark plugs on the 8-plug V8 run $100 to $150 in parts and the same in labor. CarCaseFile says the 5.0 takes about 10 quarts of oil per change and wears rear tires quickly if you drive it hard.

How much is a used S650 Mustang?

Asking prices for the 1,720 cars we track for sale right now run from $22,674 to $180,220, with a median of $43,644. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the S650 Mustang been recalled?

NHTSA lists 18 recall campaigns filed for the 2024 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for electrical system. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
