Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 (S550) buying guide
The Shelby GT350 is a flat-plane V8 Mustang with a six-speed manual, and a good used one comes down to oil consumption records and how hard the previous owner drove it.
The Shelby GT350 as a used buy
The Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 is a car to buy on its oil and maintenance records. Its 5.2-liter Voodoo V8 makes 526 hp and 429 lb-ft, revs to an 8,250-rpm redline, and is known for drinking oil. Look for logs that show someone was watching the dipstick.
The car arrived as a 2016 model, debuting in late 2015, and ran through 2020. The only gearbox is a six-speed manual. CarBuzz quotes 60 mph in around 4.2 seconds, and calls a used one tremendous value, though it also reckons the car could be among the best driver's cars ever from the USA.
It suits someone who wants a Mustang that works on a track and still gets driven on the street. If you plan to find one, start with our used Ford Mustang listings.
Shelby GT350 years and versions
There are two versions. The GT350 is the one most buyers want. GarageBinder describes it as combining capability with daily usability. Magnetic Ride Control was standard on both versions.
The GT350R is the track-focused one. It gets wider Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber, lightweight Carbon Revolution wheels and more aero, and loses its back seats. Exotic Car Hacks adds that air conditioning and the stereo go too. GarageBinder lists carbon-ceramic brakes and a stiffer spring rate, and says it is faster on a track but harder to live with on the street. CarBuzz notes that Rs are harder to find used. Each has its own page: GT350 coupes and GT350R coupes.
Year by year: 2017 made the Track Package standard on every GT350, with a strut tower brace plus transmission, engine oil and rear differential coolers. A rearview camera and updated Sync 3 became standard for 2018. For 2019 Ford revised the suspension, aerodynamics and tires, and fitted a redesigned rear spoiler with an optional Gurney flap. 2020 brought no major changes and was the last year, with Heritage Edition packages returning.
Exotic Car Hacks says the earliest cars were more prone to the engine failures that have been reported, and that some engines were replaced under warranty. It describes those failures as not widespread. That points to a later car with the updates, if your budget allows. The optional Recaro seats are wider and softer than those in the Mustang GT, which suits long drives.

Common Shelby GT350 problems
Oil consumption is the main worry, and the other faults are mostly wear items and software.
Oil consumption
Exotic Car Hacks says oil use is frequently reported, and blames tired piston rings, a bad PCV valve or a blocked air filter. Ford's NHTSA-filed program notice says hard driving, track use and long spells at high rpm can mean about 1 quart per 500 miles, and tells owners to check the level at every fill-up. GarageBinder puts typical street use at roughly 1 quart per 2,500-3,000 miles.
Engine failure
A Voodoo that runs dry can need a rebuild, which GarageBinder prices at $8,000-15,000. Exotic Car Hacks says failures have been reported but are not widespread, and that early cars were more prone.
Oil filter and cooler leaks
On 2015-2017 cars built February 24, 2015 through November 22, 2016, an under-torqued oil filter assembly can loosen and leak, according to NHTSA's customer satisfaction program record. A separate recall covers an oil cooler hose that may separate on some 2015-2017 Mustangs.
Surge or hesitation
Cars from 2015 to 2020 may surge or hesitate with no fault codes stored, sometimes with the cruise control dead. Ford's service bulletin traces it to a loose transmission output shaft flange nut, and the fix is to replace the nut.
Failed MagneRide dampers
The adaptive dampers can fail, typically above 70,000-100,000 miles according to GarageBinder, or sooner on cars that were tracked heavily.
Clutch and shift issues
Owners report clunky shifts and occasional clutch trouble, particularly when cold, linked to synchro problems or clutch noise. GarageBinder says clutches wear faster on daily-driven cars, typically at 50,000-80,000 miles depending on use.
Panel gaps and electronics
Exotic Car Hacks lists uneven body panel gaps and some electrical glitches, Sync 3 included, among reported complaints.
What to check on a used Shelby GT350
Start with the paperwork, then spend the viewing on the engine, clutch and brakes.
- Ask for the date of the last oil change and how much oil the owner has topped up since.
- Request a maintenance log, not just a purchase receipt, since deferred upkeep around track use is the concern.
- Ask whether the car has been tracked, and whether fresh brake fluid and monitored oil went with it.
- Check the oil level on the dipstick yourself, and look around the oil filter housing and cooler hoses for seepage.
- Run the car from cold and feel for clunky shifts or clutch noise through the first few gears.
- Drive it with cruise control on and watch for surging or hesitation, then ask if the flange nut service was done.
- Listen and feel for harshness or damper noise over bumps, especially on cars past 70,000 miles.
- Inspect the brake rotors and ask whether they were replaced or machined, because machining is not acceptable on 2015-2018 cars.
- Look at panel gaps and run through the Sync 3 screen and electronics for faults.
- Book a pre-purchase inspection with an authorized dealer or an experienced independent mechanic.
Shelby GT350 running costs
GarageBinder gives replacement MagneRide dampers at $600-900 per corner and a clutch replacement at $1,200-1,800. Exotic Car Hacks puts an oil change at $150 to $250, and with the oil habits above you will be topping up between changes.
NHTSA's brake service bulletin says rotors on 2015-2018 cars must be replaced rather than machined. It also calls brake squeal and extra brake dust normal. For the big number, remember the engine rebuild figure above.
Shelby GT350 recalls and complaints
NHTSA lists 25 recall campaigns across these model years for Mustang, though many cover wider Ford ranges and not every car in a year was affected. Among them are an oil cooler hose that may separate on certain 2015-2017 cars, causing an oil leak, and corroded front seat belt pretensioner cables on certain 2015-2017 cars. Others cover rearview camera wiring and a brake fluid level sensor on 2020 cars.
Owners have filed 1,557 complaints with NHTSA, most about the engine (292), the electrical system (264) and the power train (193). These are reports, not proven faults. Run any car's VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup before you buy.

Our verdict
Buy a standard GT350 if you want one car to drive on the street and take to a track day. A 2017 or later car brings the standard Track Package, and later years the updates Ford made in 2018 and 2019. The newer S650 Mustang guide covers the next generation. Choose the GT350R only if you accept the lost comfort and the deleted equipment, and be ready to search harder for one. Compare asking levels in our Mustang price guide, and see the best used sports cars for rivals.
Insist on a documented oil history, a pre-purchase inspection and a clean check of the oil cooler and filter recalls. Skip any car with no maintenance record, or one whose owner cannot say how much oil it uses between changes.

Shelby GT350: common questions
What is the best Shelby GT350 to buy?
A standard GT350 from 2017 or later is the best all-round choice. It has the Track Package as standard and is easier to live with than the GT350R, which is harder to find and gives up comfort. Pick the R only if track use is the point.
What goes wrong with the Shelby GT350?
Oil consumption is the main concern, and a Voodoo run dry can need an $8,000-15,000 rebuild, according to GarageBinder. Other reported issues include surge or hesitation from a loose transmission output shaft flange nut, failing MagneRide dampers, clutch wear and Sync 3 glitches.
Is the Shelby GT350 reliable?
Mostly, if the oil has been watched. Exotic Car Hacks says engine failures have been reported but are not widespread, with early cars more prone. NHTSA lists 25 recall campaigns for the Mustang across these years and 1,557 owner complaints, most about the engine.
How much does it cost to run a Shelby GT350?
Expect an oil change at $150 to $250, according to Exotic Car Hacks, and a clutch job at $1,200-1,800, per GarageBinder. Dampers run $600-900 per corner. Brake rotors on 2015-2018 cars must be replaced, not machined.
How much is a used Shelby GT350?
Asking prices for the 234 cars we track for sale right now run from $36,780 to $120,790, with a median of $59,057. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.
Has the Shelby GT350 been recalled?
NHTSA lists 25 recall campaigns filed for the 2015 to 2020 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for electrical system. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
