Lamborghini Aventador buying guide

The Aventador's single-clutch gearbox, early-car recalls and carbon-ceramic brakes decide which one is worth buying, and paperwork matters more than model year.

The Aventador as a used buy

A used Lamborghini Aventador asks you to check a single-clutch ISR gearbox that can wear its clutch, a run of recalls on the early cars, and carbon-ceramic brakes that are extremely expensive to replace. It covers the 2012 to 2022 model years, replaced the Murciélago and put a 6.5-liter V12 in a carbon-fiber monocoque.

Car Collector International puts total production at 11,465 cars, built as Coupe and Roadster from the LP 700-4 through the SV, S, SVJ and Ultimae run-out car. The V12 is naturally aspirated and dry-sump, and the drivetrain is electronically controlled all-wheel drive.

The same publication rates the engine as sturdy and names actuator wear and clutch life as the things that vary from car to car. Work through the used Aventadors for sale with that in mind, and judge each car by its records and its gearbox rather than its badge.

Aventador years and versions

The original LP 700-4 was unveiled in 2011 with 700 PS, about 691 SAE horsepower. CarsCounsel says 2012 and 2013 cars call for care because of early recalls and harsher suspension tuning. PistonHeads is warmer toward 2013, suggesting those cars strike the best compromise between price and dependability, provided every module upgrade has been done. Cars for sale are on the LP 700-4 page.

The SV ran from 2015 to 2017 with 750 CV and was around 50 kg lighter than the LP 700-4. Production was 600 Coupes and 500 Roadsters, and Car Collector International calls the SV blue-chip. CarsCounsel names the 2016 SV as the track-focused choice, with the sound deadening stripped out. Listings are on the SV page.

The Aventador S (2017 to 2022) was the mid-life refresh, with revised aerodynamics and four-wheel steering. CarsCounsel puts the 2017 to 2022 S and SVJ years at the top of its list for better steering and software, and picks the 2018 S as the best of the lot. The S and SVJ also introduced the LDVI control unit, which sharpened traction control and transmission mapping.

The SVJ (2018 to 2021) has 770 CV and ALA 2.0 active aerodynamics, with 900 Coupes and 800 Roadsters. The Ultimae (2021 to 2022) is the most powerful Aventador at 780 CV, with 350 Coupes and 250 Roadsters. Car Collector International says the SVJ, its Roadster and the Ultimae head the market for limited-run Aventadors. See the SVJ and the Ultimae.

Common Aventador problems

ISR gearbox failure

PistonHeads says the single-clutch ISR could fail entirely, most often on 2012 cars with a leaking seal. Factory software updates and better fluids improved it over the years, and a new ECU went into 2013 models.

Clutch wear

The single-clutch transmission can wear its clutch early in stop-and-go traffic, and it shifts harshly at low speeds. Replacement is a large bill, covered under costs.

Fuel system recall

A 2017 recall covered 2012 to 2017 cars: with a full tank, gasoline may reach the exhaust, and dealers upgrade the evaporative emissions system. CarsCounsel says buyers of 2012 cars must confirm the fuel flange recall was done.

Engine stall

A 2018 recall covered 2012 to 2018 cars that might stall when the pedal is released below 2000 rpm during an automatic downshift. Updated engine software is the fix.

SVJ and SV recalls

NHTSA records a 2018 to 2021 SVJ Coupe recall for hood hinge screws that may loosen, which could let the hood detach at high speed. Wheel centering bolts are a separate case: that campaign covers 2015 to 2016 SV cars, though CarsCounsel files the problem under the SVJ.

Electrical glitches

Early cars occasionally showed flickering instrument clusters and infotainment freezes, according to CarsCounsel.

Engine bay heat

The V12 gives off a lot of heat, and PistonHeads advises against parking over dry grass.

What to check on a used Aventador

  • Ask for the full service history and check the car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup for open campaigns.
  • Have remaining clutch life read through diagnostic software rather than trusting the seller's estimate.
  • Listen for harsh shifts at low speed, which the single-clutch gearbox is known for, and compare what you hear with the clutch-life reading.
  • Get a specialist to run ECU diagnostics and pull the fault-code history, and have the cold start and a compression test done while the engine is still cold and untouched, since CarsCounsel puts an independent inspection ahead of model year.
  • Look closely at the carbon-ceramic discs, because Sports Car Market calls replacing them extremely expensive.
  • Cycle the magnetorheological dampers through every mode and look for oil leaking from any of them.
  • Run a paint-depth gauge over carbon panels to catch refinishing or accident repair, and ask for underbody photos.
  • On an SV, confirm the carbon splitter, fender vents and rear wing are factory; on an SVJ, watch the ALA flaps move.
  • Ask for proof that the fuel recall and the stall software update were done on any 2012 to 2018 car.

Aventador running costs

CarsCounsel calls routine maintenance extremely expensive: an oil change runs to hundreds of dollars, major services to thousands, and a clutch replacement tops ten thousand dollars.

Open Labor Project estimates five-year ownership of a 2022 6.5L V12 at $50,350, about $10,070 a year in maintenance labor at $150 an hour. The Aventador price guide shows what the cars themselves cost, which is a separate budget from this one.

Aventador recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 9 recall campaigns across 2012 to 2022. The most serious cover gasoline contacting the exhaust on 2012 to 2017 cars with a full tank, possible engine stalling on 2012 to 2018 cars, and 2018 to 2021 SVJ Coupes whose hood hinge screws may loosen so the hood could detach at speed. Others cover brake disc centering bolts on 2015 to 2016 SV cars, a 2012 headlight standards issue, and individual SVJ suspension, door handle and oil line issues.

Owners have filed 2 complaints with NHTSA, one of them mentioning a fire. Complaints are reports, not proven faults. A campaign for one model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check each car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Our verdict

Find a 2017 to 2022 S or SVJ, the years CarsCounsel favors. A 2013 LP 700-4 is the alternative, but only with proof every module upgrade was done, which is PistonHeads' condition. Treat a 2012 car as a risk until the fuel flange recall is documented.

Car Collector International would rather you own a thoroughly documented car in a popular specification than a worn example of a rarer model. Pair that with a clutch-life reading, a look at the carbon-ceramic discs and a check that every recall is closed.

Aventador: common questions

What is the best Aventador to buy?

The 2017 to 2022 Aventador S and SVJ are the best choices, according to CarsCounsel, which cites improved steering and software. It singles out the 2018 S as the best of the range. PistonHeads favors a 2013 car only if every module upgrade has been done.

What goes wrong with the Aventador?

The main issues are the ISR single-clutch gearbox, with clutch wear in traffic and failures mostly on 2012 cars, and a run of recalls. Those cover fuel reaching the exhaust, engine stalling and, on SVJ cars, hood hinges. Early cars also had instrument cluster flicker and infotainment freezes.

Is the Aventador reliable?

The V12 itself holds up well, but the gearbox and recall items are the weak points. Car Collector International names actuator wear and clutch life as the variables that matter. NHTSA lists 9 recall campaigns, and owners have filed 2 complaints.

How much does it cost to run an Aventador?

Expect high bills. CarsCounsel says an oil change costs hundreds of dollars, major services thousands and a clutch more than ten thousand. Open Labor Project estimates about $10,070 a year in maintenance labor on a 2022 car, and carbon-ceramic brake replacement is extremely expensive.

How much is a used Aventador?

Asking prices for the 85 cars we track for sale right now run from $280,353 to $3,000,000, with a median of $841,488. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the Aventador been recalled?

NHTSA lists 9 recall campaigns filed for the 2012 to 2022 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for engine and engine cooling. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
