Lamborghini Urus buying guide

The Urus is a heavy twin-turbo V8 SUV whose model year decides the risk: 2019 and 2020 cars bring a fuel-line recall, air suspension leaks and electrical glitches.

The Urus as a used buy

A 2019 or 2020 Lamborghini Urus should only be bought with a complete, documented service history. Those cars carry a fuel-line recall, and CarsCounsel says they are likelier to suffer air suspension and electrical teething problems.

The Urus, S and Performante all use a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, on the Volkswagen Group MLB Evo platform shared with the Bentley Bentayga, Audi Q8 and Porsche Cayenne. U.S. sales began with the 2019 model year, and we track the Urus, Urus S and Urus Performante.

Weighing it against its closest rival is easier with our Audi RS Q8 vs Lamborghini Urus comparison, and the best used luxury SUVs list shows where else to look.

Urus years and versions

The 2023 model year split the range. Until then the Urus (sold from 2018 to 2022) used a 641 hp V8, an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive with torque vectoring, essentially unchanged. Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard throughout, 440mm at the front.

For 2023 Lamborghini replaced the base car with the Urus S. It makes 657 hp and has a revised hood plus new front and rear styling. The Performante arrived the same year with the same output, but it swaps the air suspension for steel springs, sits lower, has a wider track, less weight, carbon-fiber body elements and a Rally drive mode.

Marque and CarsCounsel both name the 2023 Urus S as the best buy, and treat the Performante as the enthusiast's choice, since the S matches its power. On ride, Octane Files and Exotics Hunter agree the air-sprung Urus and S are the better riders, while the Performante's springs sit 20mm lower and ride harder.

The Urus SE plug-in hybrid arrived for 2025 with a published 789 hp combined, and sits outside the versions we track. Browse used Urus listings, or go straight to the Urus S or Performante pages.

Common Urus problems

Fuel-line connectors

On 2019 and 2020 cars the fuel-line quick connectors could soften in engine-bay heat, a fire risk that led to a recall. Confirm the work was done.

Cracked cylinder bores

A handful of engines built in October 2020 developed cracked bores, traced to a misaligned block casting stamp. PistonHeads puts the total at 12 cars, four of them Uruses built within two weeks.

Air suspension leaks

As the car ages, the adaptive air struts tend to leak, according to CarsCounsel. Replacement needs specialized calibration and expensive OEM parts.

Infotainment glitches

Early model years had occasional screen freezes and sensor warnings, mostly fixed by software updates.

Coolant housing heat damage

Engine heat can make coolant housings and fittings brittle. carchecker.pro puts a repair that swaps the affected parts and refills and bleeds the system at up to €2,500.

Rear-axle steering wear

Clunking or an odd rear-steer feel points to wear in the rear steering. A new actuator can run to €4,000, according to carchecker.pro.

Hood latch rivets

Urus S and Performante models from 2023 and 2024 were recalled over the hood-latch striker rivets. Ask for proof the fix was done.

What to check on a used Urus

  • Ask a Lamborghini dealer to confirm the fuel-line, cylinder bore and hood-latch recall work against the car's chassis number.
  • Request receipts for any work on the 48V system, air suspension, cooling system or infotainment.
  • Measure the ride height at all four corners, listen for the air suspension compressor and ask about leaks or overnight settling (none of this applies to a Performante).
  • Test both touchscreens and the rearview camera for blank screens, freezing, reboots or false alerts.
  • Look at all three screens for any that have dimmed.
  • Operate the soft-close doors and confirm the windows drop and rise with them.
  • Listen for clunking from the rear axle on the test drive and notice any odd rear-steer feel.
  • Find out how the carbon-ceramic brakes were assessed, since wear is measured by disc weight rather than visible thickness.
  • Inspect the wheels for curb damage, which Exotics Hunter says is more common here than on lower-slung exotics.
  • Insist that a 2019 or 2020 seller produces the full documented service history.

Urus running costs

Servicing is annual, and it goes through the dealer network. One UK dealer quotes £1,074 for the annual service and £2,358 for the major service, according to PistonHeads. The annual visit covers fresh engine oil and filter, brake fluid and an alignment check; the major service adds spark plugs, air filter and transmission oil. Carchecker.pro gives the oil interval as 15,000 km or 12 months.

Tires on the 21 to 24-inch wheels wear quickly on this heavy car and there is no spare. Carbon-ceramic brake replacement is a very large bill. The Urus price guide shows what the cars cost to buy.

Urus recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 7 recall campaigns for the Urus across 2019 to 2027. The most serious are about fire and parts coming loose. 2019 to 2020 cars had fuel-line quick connectors that engine-compartment heat could damage, risking a fuel leak, and certain 2025 cars had high-pressure fuel pump fasteners that may not be tight enough, also risking a leak. Certain 2021 cars had cracks that may develop on the cylinder bore surface. On 2023 to 2024 Performante and S models, the hood latch striker may separate and let the hood open or detach while driving.

The other three are lesser. A rearview camera software error covers 2019 to 2024, an infotainment fault can disable the camera display on 2022 cars, and middle-rear seat belt retractors on 2021 cars may deactivate early. A campaign for a model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so run each car's VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. Owners have filed 4 complaints with NHTSA, and none of them report crashes, fires, injuries or deaths. They are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict

Buy a 2023 Urus S. Marque and CarsCounsel both pick it, and it gives you the 657 hp output on air suspension that rides better than the Performante's. Take the Performante only if you want the lower, firmer setup, since the power is the same.

Skip any 2019 or 2020 car without a complete service history: those are the years with the fuel-line recall and the air suspension and electrical teething trouble CarsCounsel describes. CarsCounsel and Octane Files rate the V8 itself as proven, so the risk sits in the struts, screens and recall work, not the engine.

Urus: common questions

What is the best Urus to buy?

The 2023 Urus S is the best Urus to buy, according to Marque and CarsCounsel. The Performante is the enthusiast's pick, with the same output but a firmer ride.
