Maserati GranTurismo (2008 to 2019) buying guide

A used GranTurismo with the ZF automatic and clean records is the one to look for; the MC Shift gearbox and worn engine-bay rubber are where the big bills sit.

The GranTurismo as a used buy

The GranTurismo is a Pininfarina-styled 2+2 with a Ferrari-derived V8, and the gearbox decides how a used one will treat your wallet. Cars with the standard ZF automatic are the ones the sources trust. The MC Shift automated manual brings clutch wear and actuator repairs.

Production ran from 2007 through December 2019, and in the US the model years are 2008 to 2018. The first cars had a naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 with a six-speed ZF automatic. The S brought a 4.7-litre engine, then came the MC Stradale and the Sport. A GranCabrio convertible arrived in 2010, and Car Collector International says 11,715 were built.

It is a four-seat grand tourer rather than a compact sports car, which is the yardstick to use if you cross-shop it in our Maserati vs Ferrari and Maserati vs Porsche comparisons. audi-net.com says adverts often label MC Shift cars simply automatic, so the paperwork matters when you browse the used GranTurismo listings.

GranTurismo years and versions

The first car made 399bhp from the 4.2-litre V8, according to evo. The S raised that to 454bhp from a 4.7-litre unit. The MC Stradale was unveiled at Paris in 2010 with 444 hp and was initially strictly two-seat. The Sport arrived in 2012, and evo calls the 454bhp Sport the most appealing used buy for balance of value and performance.

The MC Shift is an automated manual fitted to selected S and MC derivatives, and RerEV says it was standard on MC Stradale variants in 2009 to 2012. For the best GT experience evo recommends the standard ZF torque-converter gearbox, and describes the MC Shift as a lumpier shift paired with firmer suspension.

CarsCounsel names 2018 to 2019 and 2013 to 2017 ZF cars as the best years, and advises avoiding 2007 to 2008 and MC Shift cars. It also calls the 2012 to 2015 MC Stradale the best enthusiast choice, but track-focused and in need of expert inspection. The sources disagree on the facelift: one points to 2018 for a comprehensive update, another to 2013 for the Sport. The GranTurismo MC market page shows the MC cars for sale, and the price guide covers the rest.

Common GranTurismo problems

MC Shift clutch wear

CarsCounsel says the automated manual wears clutches quickly, especially in stop-and-go traffic, and that actuator failures lead to expensive repairs. Cars with the Cambiocorsa gearbox also use clutches sooner than a traditional manual because of the number of shifts.

Variator rattle

Some early cars were delivered with faulty camshaft variators, which cause a rattle on a cold start. Replacing all variators and related wear items can run to €10,000, per carchecker.pro.

Cracking coolant hoses

Coolant hoses and crossover tubes can crack, and water pumps fail. Labor is heavy, so a modest part can still mean a big bill, and replacing all the engine-bay rubber hoses is put at up to €3,000 by carchecker.pro.

Engine oil leaks

Oil leaks are not uncommon, usually from perished valve-cover gaskets. The front covers can fail too.

Electrical glitches

Flickering rear brake lights and faulty rain sensors are often cured by reflashing the ECU. Blown control modules are likely if the symptoms follow a jump-start, evo says.

Interior wear

Early cars suffer worn switchgear and peeling leather, and interior buttons can turn sticky.

Rusty wheel bolts

Rusty wheel bolts are an issue but cheap to replace.

What to check on a used GranTurismo

  • Start the engine fully cold and listen for a metallic rattle in the first 30 seconds, which points to the variators.
  • Look around the valve covers and the front timing case for oily residue.
  • Read the service records to see which gearbox the car has, since an MC Shift car may be advertised as an automatic.
  • Inspect every engine-bay hose and the crossover tubes for cracks, and ask when the water pump was last changed.
  • Run a finger over each brake disc out to the outside edge to feel for a lip.
  • Look down the sides in daylight for uneven panel gaps or colour differences that suggest past damage.
  • Test the Skyhook damping, remembering that above 30C it may temporarily deactivate.
  • On a GranCabrio, cycle the roof and inspect the seals and drainage for water entry.
  • Work every interior switch, check the leather for peeling, and watch the rear lights for flicker.
  • Ask for proof that open recalls were done, and run the VIN through NHTSA's lookup.

GranTurismo running costs

Servicing figures from evo are UK numbers: a minor service is about £600 at an independent or £1600 at a main dealer, and a major service about £1000 independent or £2600 main dealer.

Evo also says tires may be needed every 12,000 miles or so. For the larger items, carchecker.pro puts all variators and related parts at up to €10,000 and a full set of engine-bay hoses at up to €3,000. For ownership costs beyond repairs, see how much a Maserati costs.

GranTurismo recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 10 recall campaigns across these model years. They cover airbag control units on 2015 to 2018 GranTurismo and 2016 to 2018 convertibles (a defective capacitor), a seat-sensor airbag software fault on 2008 cars, fuel line corrosion and door latches on certain 2016 cars, rear suspension tie rods on 2008 and 2009 cars, and ball joint nuts on 2008 cars. The rest concern rear lights on 2008 to 2010, a seat belt warning buzzer on 2009, and tire pressure monitoring software on 2012. A campaign filed for a model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check each car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 9 complaints with NHTSA, mostly filed as unknown or other, then electrical system. They are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict

CarsCounsel's advice is to look at 2013 to 2017 or 2018 to 2019 cars with the ZF automatic, and to avoid 2007 to 2008 and MC Shift cars. Evo calls the ZF automatic virtually bulletproof and rates the 454bhp Sport as the most appealing used buy. The MC Stradale suits enthusiasts willing to pay for an expert inspection first.

Do not compromise on a cold start you witness or on service records that name the gearbox. Hoses and variators are where carchecker.pro puts the biggest bills, up to €3,000 and €10,000.

GranTurismo: common questions

What is the best GranTurismo to buy?

The 454bhp Sport with the ZF automatic is the pick. CarsCounsel rates 2013 to 2017 and 2018 to 2019 ZF cars as the best years, and says to avoid 2007 to 2008 and MC Shift cars.

What goes wrong with the GranTurismo?

The main faults are rapid clutch wear on MC Shift cars, variator rattle on early cars, cracked coolant hoses and valve-cover oil leaks. Electrical glitches and worn interior switchgear also turn up. Rusty wheel bolts are cheap to fix.

Is the GranTurismo reliable?

Mostly, with the right car. Evo reports a strong reliability record, citing a largely bulletproof V8 and a proven ZF gearbox. MC Shift cars and neglected hoses and variators are the costly exceptions.

How much does it cost to run a GranTurismo?

Evo's UK figures put a minor service at about £600 independent and a major at about £1000, with main dealers asking more. Tires may be needed every 12,000 miles or so, and carchecker.pro puts hoses at up to €3,000 and variators at up to €10,000.

How much is a used GranTurismo?

Asking prices for the 27 cars we track for sale right now run from $22,500 to $74,889, with a median of $38,353. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the GranTurismo been recalled?

NHTSA lists 10 recall campaigns filed for the 2008 to 2019 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for air bags. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
