Maserati MC20 buying guide

The MC20 is a young carbon-tub V6 supercar, so a used buyer's job is checking recall paperwork, service history and the spec, not hunting for known engine failures.

The MC20 as a used buy

The Maserati MC20 is a recent enough car that the main risks are paperwork and spec, not age. Check that every recall was closed, that the service record is unbroken, and that the options are the ones the market wants.

It is a Modena-built, mid-engined supercar with a carbon-fiber monocoque developed with Dallara and butterfly doors. The Nettuno 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 makes 621 bhp and drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Production ran from 2020, the Coupe arriving first and the Cielo following in 2022 with a glass roof that switches between five settings.

It suits a buyer who wants a usable, fairly lightweight supercar and is happy to deal with the Maserati network for service. Independent expertise is thin, according to Car Collector International.

MC20 years and versions

The Coupe is the core car. Carvana points to it for the original closed-roof experience. The Cielo is the retractable-hard-top version, quoted at 1,540 kg against 1,475 kg for the Coupe. For 2026 the road cars were renamed MCPura, with new bumpers and colors but the same 621 bhp powertrain.

Options count for more than model year, says Octane Files. A spec with the carbon packs, carbon-ceramic brakes and nose lift should find a buyer more readily than the spec sheet implies. A mechanical limited-slip differential was standard. An electronic one was optional, and cars with it are the ones that have shown a low-speed shudder.

Car Collector International treats a well-optioned early Coupe with delivery mileage and a full Fuoriserie build sheet as the reference used-market car. Above it sit the GT2 Stradale, with 631 bhp, a fixed rear wing and track-focused calibration (914 built), and numbered editions: Cielo PrimaSerie (60), Notte (50), Icona (20) and Leggenda (20). All the numbered cars use the standard 621 bhp package. The MCXtrema is a track-only car with 730 bhp and is not road legal, so ignore it if you want to drive on the street.

Common MC20 problems

Sources report few serious faults so far, but there are some patterns to know, and the recall list is the longest part of the story.

Fuel line sensor housing

Recall 442 concerns a housing for the fuel line sensor on some 2022 cars that can split and let fuel escape, with a risk of engine stall and fire. Confirm the work was done.

Accessory belt pulley

Carlyle lists the accessory belt tensioner pulley on the Nettuno as a known faulty part, with Maserati covering only the pulley itself.

Butterfly door faults

The door mechanism and electronics can bring problems with the power actuator, latch and controls. Carlyle puts repairs at $1,000 to $3,000.

Dual-clutch wear

The clutch pack of the eight-speed gearbox wears faster with track or launch use. A car that has been used that way deserves a closer look at its fluid and fault history.

Electronic diff shudder

Cars with the optional electronic differential have shown a low-speed shudder. Maserati describes it as a characteristic, not a defect, so a warranty claim is unlikely to fix it.

Cabin and electronics

Octane Files notes complaints about the camera rear-view mirror, fob-operated windows, interior lighting and Sonus faber audio, and some cabins have worn their leather early. Infotainment screens and connectivity can also have software bugs.

What to check on a used MC20

Paperwork matters as much as the car on a model this new.

  • Ask for proof that all four recall campaigns were completed, as SafeCarInfo advises, before you agree to buy.
  • Look for a car still under warranty or with an unbroken dealer record, and ask what was done at each service and by whom.
  • Put the car on a lift and inspect the splitters and undertrays, because the low nose and long overhangs get scraped.
  • Drive an electronic-diff car slowly to find out whether you can live with the low-speed shudder.
  • Test the dual-clutch gearbox cold and hot, in manual and automatic modes, and check launch control.
  • Reconcile the gearbox fluid service and fault code history against what the seller tells you.
  • Get the original build sheet, the Fuoriserie order book and a photo of the numbered plaque on any limited edition before going further.
  • On a car without documented main-dealer service, get an oil analysis, a cold-start check, an ECU boost and knock-history readout, and an injector and pre-chamber inspection.
  • Demand full body-shop documentation for any car with a claim or repair history, including any carbon tub inspection or repair.
  • Operate both butterfly doors several times and watch for slow actuators or latches that do not catch cleanly.

MC20 running costs

Carlyle puts the 37,500-mile service at $2,200 to $3,000 and the 50,000-mile major service at $4,200 to $4,700. It prices the accessory belt pulley campaign work at $500 to $1,500 and dual-clutch wear repairs at $3,000 to $6,000.

Carbon-ceramic rotors are the big wear item, at $8,000 to $15,000 or more to replace, says Carlyle. Car Collector International says pre-chamber head and injection parts are priced at the top of the range for modern V6 supercars.

The car came with a four-year, 50,000-mile warranty, extendable to as much as seven years, according to PistonHeads. A car still inside that cover is worth looking for. The nose lift cost £2,700 to £3,000 when new, in Octane Files' figures. PistonHeads adds that the MC20 likes a drink. For running costs across the brand, see how much a Maserati costs.

MC20 recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists six recall campaigns for the 2022 to 2027 model years. The most serious are a split-prone fuel line sensor housing that can leak fuel (2022 MC20), and two on the 2023 MC20 Cielo for the windshield frame: bonding that may be insufficient and let the frame detach in a crash, and stud sealant that may not have been installed.

The others cover brake lights that may flicker on 2022 cars, incorrect tire-label weight information on 2022-2024 MC20 and 2023-2024 Cielo cars, and radio software that may prevent the rearview image displaying on 2022-2025 cars. A campaign for a model year does not mean every car was affected, so check a car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. NHTSA holds no owner complaints for these model years.

Campaign Reported Model years Component What can happen
25V098000 Feb 17, 2025 2022 to 2025 Back over prevention A rearview camera image that does not display decreases the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
24V537000 Jul 18, 2024 2022 to 2024 Equipment A vehicle with an incorrect maximum capacity weight value may be overloaded, which can increase the risk of a crash.
23V570000 Aug 10, 2023 2023 Structure A body structure that does not perform as intended and a roof with insufficient strength may not adequately protect occupants in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
23V242000 Apr 5, 2023 2023 Structure A detached windshield frame can increase the risk of injury in a crash.
22V265000 Apr 19, 2022 2022 Exterior lighting Flickering brake lights may confuse other drivers, which can increase the risk of a crash.
21V872000 Nov 10, 2021 2022 Fuel system, gasoline A fuel leak may cause an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. A fuel leak also increases the risk of fire in the presence of an ignition source.

Our verdict

Find a Coupe with a full build sheet, a clean dealer service record and every recall closed. Prefer one with carbon-ceramic brakes in good condition, or budget for new rotors. If you want the open roof, make sure the Cielo's windshield frame recalls were done.

Skip any car with gaps in its history or an undocumented carbon tub repair. SafeCarInfo calls the recall history notable and a quality-control concern for a 2022 car. Look over the MC20 price guide and used Maserati listings before you negotiate, and read the Maserati warranty terms and the service record before you sign.

MC20: common questions

What is the best MC20 to buy?

A well-optioned Coupe with a full build sheet, an unbroken dealer service record and completed recalls is the one to find. Sources say options matter more than model year, so look for carbon packs, carbon-ceramic brakes and the nose lift. Limited editions are worth considering only with their plaque and commission file.

What goes wrong with the MC20?

Reported problems include the accessory belt pulley, butterfly door actuators and latches, faster dual-clutch wear under track use, and software bugs in the infotainment. Some cars with the optional electronic diff shudder at low speed. There are also six NHTSA recall campaigns, including a fuel line sensor housing that may leak.

Is the MC20 reliable?

Mostly, though the evidence is short. PistonHeads reports no serious issues so far, while SafeCarInfo says the recall history suggests quality-control concerns on the 2022 car. Confirm that all recalls were completed on any car you consider.

How much does it cost to run an MC20?

Carlyle puts the 37,500-mile service at $2,200 to $3,000 and the 50,000-mile major service at $4,200 to $4,700. Dual-clutch repairs run $3,000 to $6,000, door repairs $1,000 to $3,000 and carbon-ceramic rotors $8,000 to $15,000 or more. Servicing goes through the Maserati network.

How much is a used MC20?

Asking prices for the 44 cars we track for sale right now run from $158,515 to $276,221, with a median of $192,037. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the MC20 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 6 recall campaigns filed for the 2022 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for back over prevention. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
