Rivian R1T buying guide

The Rivian R1T is a quad-motor-capable electric pickup whose first-year trucks carry the most recall and complaint history, so the build, battery and open campaigns decide which one to buy.

The R1T as a used buy

The Rivian R1T is a five-seat electric crew-cab pickup with a 4.5-foot bed, and the used-buying question is which configuration you are looking at. Early trucks differ a lot from later ones in motors, battery and wiring, and the window sticker tells you which you have.

It is rated to tow up to 11,000 lb, with a hitch behind a removable panel. Storage includes a lockable frunk of roughly 11 cubic feet, a small under-bed compartment and a full-width Gear Tunnel behind the cab. The 2024 R1T earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

Consumer Reports calls the 2022 R1T much less reliable than other cars from that model year, and the recall list below is long. Check campaign status before you buy, and browse used Rivian R1T listings to see what is on sale now.

R1T years and versions

Gen 1 runs from launch through the 2024 model year. The 2022 truck came only as a Quad-Motor with the Large battery, with Launch Edition and Adventure packages leading the rollout. Rivian added Dual-Motor and Performance Dual-Motor versions in 2023, the latter a software-unlocked higher-output Dual, and the Max pack reached customers that year.

Gen 1 batteries, per Recurrent, were Standard (LFP), Large (the most common) and Max. Recurrent notes that Quad-Motor and Max were not always offered together, and Auto Pro Nashville and CarVins both say not to assume any given truck is a quad. Confirm the build from the window sticker.

The 2025 refresh was a deep re-engineering rather than a styling update. Rivian swapped the Bosch-supplied quad-motor drive units for in-house motors and moved from domain-based wiring (roughly 17 ECUs) to a zonal architecture (about 7 ECUs). Gen 2 offers Dual, Tri and Quad setups, plus newer driver-assistance hardware.

Auto Pro Nashville says a well-documented 2023 or 2024 truck balances early-Rivian pricing against newer configuration choices, and that a Gen 1 truck with the right battery, motors, service history and remaining warranty can still be the smarter value. CarVins calls the easy path a 2023 or 2024 truck with the Large pack, in dual-motor or quad form, with the control-arm and pedal campaigns closed, one or two private owners and a clean title. Our view follows theirs: aim there, and be warier of 2022 trucks.

Common R1T problems

Recalls and service bulletins make up much of the known-fault list.

Front control arm fastener

Recall 22V-744 covers 2022 R1Ts where the front upper control arm fastener may not have been tightened enough. Confirm it was done. Not every truck of that year was necessarily affected.

Accelerator pedal recall

Recall 23V-883 covers 2022 R1T trucks whose accelerator pedal may not detect a release. CarVins lists it among the campaigns to see closed on a good truck.

Suspension reinforcement and lines

Some 2022 trucks may have been built without the front damper reinforcement plate, which can damage the shock tower and cause noise. On some 2022 trucks the hydraulic suspension lines can vibrate against the floor and HV battery housing, risking sag, body roll or a reduced-performance mode. Rivian's bulletins call for a plate inspection and installation, and a vibration damper.

Toe link and seat belts

One recall covers a toe link that may have been reassembled incorrectly during service on 2022-2025 trucks. Another covers second-row seat belt retractor bolts that may be improperly tightened. Ask what service the truck has had.

12V battery and software

Early Gen 1 trucks have 12V/accessory battery faults, infotainment freezes and reboots, and wind or seal noise. One 2022 owner told Consumer Reports the 12V battery failed five times in 16 months.

Driveline and front end

Owners of higher-mileage Gen 1 trucks report half-shaft, control arm and damper complaints. Consumer Reports owners of 2022 Launch Editions mention a CV boot replaced under warranty and a driveshaft that failed repeatedly.

Tonneau cover

A service bulletin applies to some 2022 trucks whose powered tonneau cover may fail to open or close properly.

Defroster software

Campaign 23V-783 covers 2022-2023 trucks where a software update may have deactivated the defroster controls. NHTSA lists an over-the-air fix.

What to check on a used R1T

Start with paperwork, then work through the truck.

  • Ask for the window sticker, VIN or Rivian configuration details to confirm the battery pack and motor setup.
  • Check the NHTSA recall lookup by VIN (see Rivian listings for trucks to compare) and ask for service records showing the repairs were done.
  • Confirm warranty transfer coverage directly with Rivian before you agree to a price.
  • Test the 12-volt battery health on the test drive and ask how often it has been replaced.
  • Cycle through every air-suspension ride height and drive mode, and listen for noises from the front end.
  • Check the underbody, hitch and trailer wiring for signs of hard off-road use or towing.
  • Run the powered tonneau cover several times and ask whether it was repaired, replaced or disabled.
  • Test the screen, cameras and phone key, and watch for freezes or reboots.
  • Check that the charging cable, key cards, Camp Speaker and NACS adapter are all included.
  • Look for uneven or worn tires, since replacing them on these heavy trucks can be costly.

R1T running costs

ProblemsByVIN puts suspension repairs on the 2022 R1T at about $900 at an independent shop, steering at about $700 and powertrain at about $2,500.

Recurrent warns that Rivian's service network is sparse in many regions, that repairs and body work can mean long waits, and that insurance tends to run high. Towing cuts range significantly, and tires on these heavy trucks can be expensive. See our R1T price guide for what the market looks like, and our R1S guide if a sibling interests you.

R1T recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 18 recall campaigns for the R1T across model years 2022 to 2027. The more serious ones cover improperly tightened second-row seat belt retractor bolts on 2022-2025 trucks, front seat belt D-ring bolts on 2022-2025 trucks, a toe link possibly reassembled incorrectly on 2022-2025 trucks, and 2022-2024 B-pillar and C-pillar trim clips damaged during service that affect air bags. On 2025 trucks, one campaign covers an improperly grounded connection in the high-voltage distribution box that may cause a loss of drive power. Check any truck's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 138 complaints with NHTSA, including 11 crashes, 1 fire and 8 injuries. The largest groups are unknown or other, air bags and electrical system (22, 21 and 21), followed by suspension at 20. These are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict

Buy a 2023 or 2024 truck with the Large pack, dual-motor or quad as you prefer, with the recall campaigns closed and a clean title. A 2025 or later Gen 2 truck brings the redesigned electronics but also its own recalls, so check those too. Skip a 2022 Launch Edition unless the paperwork shows the control arm, pedal, suspension and toe link work was done.

Compare holding-value rankings too. Insist on a window sticker, a VIN recall check and written warranty transfer terms. See every R1T for sale once you know the build you want.

R1T: common questions

What is the best R1T to buy?

A well-documented 2023 or 2024 Large-pack truck, dual-motor or quad, is the best target. CarVins wants the control-arm and pedal campaigns closed and one or two private owners. Be warier of 2022 trucks.

What goes wrong with the R1T?

Recalls and bulletins dominate, mostly on 2022 trucks: control arm fasteners, accelerator pedal, suspension lines and damper plate. Owners also report 12V battery faults, infotainment freezes and half-shaft complaints on early Gen 1 trucks.

Is the R1T reliable?

Mostly not on the 2022 trucks, which Consumer Reports calls much less reliable than other cars from that model year. ProblemsByVIN scores it 5.6/10, around the segment average. Verify the specific issues before you buy.

How much does it cost to run an R1T?

ProblemsByVIN puts suspension repair at about $900, steering at about $700 and powertrain at about $2,500 on the 2022 truck. Expect long waits at a sparse service network, high insurance and costly tires on a heavy truck.

How much is a used R1T?

Asking prices for the 407 cars we track for sale right now run from $39,043 to $99,716, with a median of $55,981. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the R1T been recalled?

NHTSA lists 18 recall campaigns filed for the 2022 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for back over prevention. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
