Rivian R1S buying guide

The first-generation R1S is a fast, practical electric SUV with a long recall history and early-build quirks, so build date and service records matter more than trim.

The R1S as a used buy

The Rivian R1S is a three-row electric SUV that shares its platform with the R1T pickup, including the motors, battery packs, air suspension and electronics. This guide covers the first generation, 2022 to 2024. Rivian shipped running changes continuously, so the build date within a model year counts for more than usual.

It suits a buyer who wants an electric family SUV with real off-road ability. Treat the third row as a children's row. Raise it and cargo space nearly disappears.

Two things to settle before you commit: whether the recall work was done, and whether the car has ever refused to wake. Both are easy to ask about, and both can be checked.

R1S years and versions

Deliveries began in December 2022, so genuine 2022 cars are scarce. All of them are Quad-Motor Large Pack cars with 835 horsepower. They also carry the most early-build baggage, including a liftgate seal bulletin that names some 2022 cars.

The 2023 model year brought Dual-Motor and Performance Dual-Motor drivetrains, which went on to sell in the largest numbers. The 2024 cars gained two entry-level batteries, the LFP Standard and Standard+ packs, while the gen-1 Quad-Motor ended.

squeezed.app's buyer's guide picks a 2023 or 2024 Dual-Motor Large Pack as the best gen-1 used buy, citing useful range, better efficiency and later builds that shipped with many first-year fixes applied. That is the car to look for in used R1S listings.

The R1S is mechanically near-identical to the R1T. If you do not need the rear seats, our R1T buying guide covers the same drivetrain in pickup form.

Common R1S problems

The R1S shares the R1T's early-build issues and adds a few of its own around the liftgate and rear seats.

12V drain and no-wake

A parasitic draw on the 12V system can leave the SUV dead to the world while the main pack is full. Updates eased it, but squeezed.app says early cars can still strand you.

Air suspension failures

Compressor and air spring faults are the big-ticket item. Carlyle reports them between 40,000 and 90,000 miles, at $1,800 to $4,500.

Control arm and half-shaft wear

Front half-shaft and control-arm wear shows up at 30,000 to 50,000 miles, according to Carlyle, at $500 to $1,800 per repair. Separately, an October 2022 recall covered a front upper control arm fastener that may have been tightened improperly, which could affect steering control.

Liftgate and hatch water leaks

A service bulletin, listed by BumperScan, covers some 2022 cars with a liftgate seal flange shorter than designed, letting water in near the upper liftgate or against the rear roof applique. The powered liftgate and rear hatch sealing are R1S-specific weak spots.

HV connector corrosion

A bulletin covers battery connectors on some 2022-2024 cars that may corrode in some climates. The result is a reduced-performance safe mode, and Rivian applies sealant.

Wet front carpets

Water can get into the front HVAC assembly on 2022-2024 cars and wet the front carpets, according to a service bulletin.

Third-row seat damage

Some 2022 cars have third-row backrests that mark easily when weight is put on them folded down. Rivian replaces them.

Display failure

A frozen center display or failed infotainment may need a whole new screen. Carlyle puts that at $1,000 to $2,500 out of warranty.

What to check on a used R1S

Most of the work here is paperwork and water.

  • Run the VIN to see whether the front upper control arm fastener recall was done.
  • Check every open recall at NHTSA's lookup, because a pre-purchase inspection cannot show whether a recall repair was done.
  • Fold and release the third row completely, and try the controls in the cargo area too.
  • Watch the powered liftgate open and close, and note any hesitation.
  • Lift the cargo floor and look for water stains near the rear hatch and taillight seals.
  • Press a hand into the front carpets and check for dampness, which can point to the HVAC leak.
  • Ask the seller about past 12V battery replacements and any time the car failed to wake up.
  • Compare tire wear with the mileage, since this heavy SUV wears tires fast.
  • Look at the folded third-row backrests for cosmetic marks if the car is a 2022.
  • Ask for the build date, since running changes make later cars within a year the better ones.

R1S running costs

Routine service is cheap. Carlyle is the source for these figures. Carlyle lists a tire rotation and inspection every 7,500 miles, brake fluid every 36 months at $150 to $300, and a coolant change with early Quad-Motor drive-unit gear fluid service at 112,500 miles for $600 to $1,300. A 12V battery runs $200 to $400. Regen braking means pads and rotors typically last well beyond those on a gas SUV.

The risk sits in the repairs listed above, mainly suspension and the display. Rivian's comprehensive warranty (5 years or 60,000 miles) and its battery and drivetrain warranty (8 years or 175,000 miles) pass to later owners, so check how much of each remains. Service runs through Rivian's own centers and mobile technicians, and squeezed.app says body shops have kept cars waiting when parts run short.

R1S recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 22 recall campaigns for the R1S across 2022 to 2027. The more serious ones involve a front upper control arm fastener, a rear toe link that may have been reassembled incorrectly during service before March 10, 2025, front seat belt D-ring bolts on 2022-2025 cars, second-row seat belt retractor bolts on 2022-2026 cars, and side curtain air bag fasteners on 2022-2023 cars. Others cover a defroster software fault, fixed over the air, and a rearview camera image that may be obstructed by a notification.

Owners have filed 166 complaints with NHTSA, most about air bags and electrical issues. These are reports, not proven faults. A campaign for one model year does not mean every car was affected, so check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Our verdict

Buy a 2023 or 2024 Dual-Motor Large Pack, preferably a later build, and see what the price guide says before you negotiate. Consumer Reports rates the 2022 about average for reliability, but the 2022 cars carry the most bulletins and recalls. Skip one unless its paperwork is complete.

Browse cars for sale now, and the cheapest listings or all used Rivians if you want to compare. Insist on proof that the recalls are closed, a dry cargo floor and a car that wakes every time. Then work the third row and liftgate before you sign.

R1S: common questions

What is the best R1S to buy?

A 2023 or 2024 Dual-Motor Large Pack is the best gen-1 R1S to buy, according to squeezed.app. It offers useful range and better efficiency, and later builds carry many first-year fixes.

What goes wrong with the R1S?

The main faults are 12V drain that can leave the car unresponsive, air suspension failures, front control-arm and half-shaft wear, and water leaks around the liftgate and HVAC. The R1S also has a long recall list, so check the VIN.

Is the R1S reliable?

Mostly average, with early-build caveats. Consumer Reports rates the 2022 R1S about average for its model year, but early cars have had 12V and sealing problems and many recalls.

How much does it cost to run an R1S?

Routine servicing is modest: Carlyle lists brake fluid at $150 to $300 and a coolant change at $600 to $1,300. Budget separately for suspension repairs at $1,800 to $4,500 and a display replacement at $1,000 to $2,500 once warranty runs out.

How much is a used R1S?

Asking prices for the 587 cars we track for sale right now run from $46,900 to $114,105, with a median of $64,545. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the R1S been recalled?

NHTSA lists 22 recall campaigns filed for the 2022 to 2027 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for back over prevention. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
