Ferrari 360 (Modena, Spider and Challenge Stradale) buying guide

The 360 is a usable, relatively dependable Ferrari, but a cam variator recall, tired F1 hydraulics and aging suspension joints decide whether a car is a good one.

The 360 as a used buy

The Ferrari 360 is best bought on its paperwork. Cambelt records, proof that the early-car recalls were done and a diagnostic readout on any F1 gearbox matter more than color or mileage. The 360 ran from 1999 to 2005, when the F430 replaced it, and covers the Modena coupe, the Spider and the Challenge Stradale.

It suits someone who wants a Ferrari to use. Magneto and Autocar both call it a great way into Ferrari ownership and a car usable enough to drive daily, and CarChecker rates the Modena among the more reliable mid-engine Ferraris. The naturally aspirated 3.6-litre V8 is a development of the F355 engine and revs to 8500rpm. The aluminum body made the car only 40kg heavier than the 355 despite its extra size.

Neglect is what hurts. Servicing is not cheap, and several of the weak points below are age-related rather than design flaws, so a patchy history costs real money.

360 years and versions

The Modena coupe came first, in 1999. The Spider followed in 2000 and no targa was offered. Hagerty and Magneto say the two sold in roughly equal numbers, so you can be choosy about either. Power is quoted between 390 and 395bhp depending on the guide. Gearboxes are a six-speed manual or the F1 paddleshift, and fewer than 30 percent of buyers chose the manual when new.

Magneto and Hagerty agree that the manual Modena is the best standard 360 and the most prized, with manual hard-tops the most desirable of the regular cars. One specialist quoted by Magneto would take a low-mileage, late manual Modena, yet doubted manuals justify a £15,000 premium over an F1 car. Ferrari revised the F1 control settings in 2003 to smooth the shifts, and that update can be fitted to earlier cars, so ask what a given car has.

The Challenge Stradale is the ultimate 360 in Magneto's and Hagerty's view: 420bhp, carbon-ceramic brake discs, 19-inch alloys and an F1-only gearbox. It can be up to 110kg lighter than the Modena if the low-mass options were ticked, and it is much sharper on track. Hagerty adds that the standard car delivers nearly all of its thrills and is simpler to maintain. For most buyers that settles it, and the used Challenge Stradale listings are for those who want the track car.

Common 360 problems

Most of these are known, fixable and well documented, so the question is whether a car has been looked after.

Cam variator failure

Early cars suffered failing cam variators, and cars built before 2001 should have been fixed under a recall. Separately, CarChecker's checklist says Service Campaign 97 covers engine numbers below 60796 and that skipping it can lead to serious engine damage.

F1 hydraulics

The F1 actuators can leak or fail with age, and a failing pump relay can burn out the pump. Rough or slow shifts are the warning sign.

Suspension ball joints

Ball joints are a weakness, and knocking over bumps means they are due. Rear tie rods and tie-rod ends wear too. Hill Engineering sells upgraded joints.

Exhaust manifold cracks

Cracked manifolds occur on the 360, though Hagerty and ferrarimodena.com say less than on the 355.

Engine mounts

Autocar says vibration from the flat-plane crank can crack the engine mountings after around 20,000 miles.

Manual gearbox wear

Worn linkages can make second to third difficult, and damaged transmission mounts can cause crunching shifts. Both point to a manual car that has had a hard life.

Body corrosion

The aluminum bodywork can still corrode. Look for bubbling around the windscreen frame, the side repeaters and the nose.

Spider roof and trim

Spider roof rams can leak fluid. The soft-touch coating on switches turns sticky and peels, though it can be refinished.

What to check on a used 360

Spend the money on a specialist inspection, and use this list to filter cars before that.

  • Ask for cambelt service records and confirm the interval has been kept.
  • Listen for tappet noise on a cold start, which should fade once the engine is warm.
  • Have a main dealer check the chassis number to confirm the recalls were carried out.
  • Get a diagnostic readout of clutch wear on any F1 car and check that shifts are smooth and prompt.
  • Drive over bumps and listen for knocking that points to worn ball joints.
  • Look around the windscreen frame, side repeaters and nose for bubbling paint.
  • Check the gaskets and cam covers for oil leaks.
  • Ask whether a trickle charger has been used, because flat batteries damage the electrics.
  • Stop the Spider's roof midway through opening or closing and look at the ram seals for leaking fluid.
  • On a manual, test second to third for notchiness and listen for crunching shifts.
  • Look at the switches for sticky or peeling coating.

360 running costs

Running a 360 takes planning. Oil changes are due every 6000 miles or annually, and the cambelt is done every three years, or three to five years by another account. It is reached through a rear bulkhead panel, so the engine does not have to come out, per Magneto, Hagerty and Autocar.

Wear items add up. Clutches last up to 30,000 miles by one account, or 20,000 on a manual and 15,000 on an F1 by another, and ferrarimodena.com puts a replacement at about £1300 (a UK figure). It also suggests about £1600 to replace all four ball joints. For a total budget, one specialist suggests £6000 over three years, while another guide suggests £2000 per year.

360 recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 8 recall campaigns for 1999 to 2005 cars. The most serious cover an oil leak in the steering pump-to-rack pipe on 2003 to 2004 Modena, Spider and Challenge Stradale cars, which could gradually reduce power assistance, and faulty wheel lug bolts on 2004 Challenge Stradale cars. Others cover a badly crimped engine ground strap on 2001 cars, a starter ring gear that could separate from the clutch on 1999 to 2000 Modenas, and an air bag control unit mounting on 1999 cars. A campaign for one model year does not mean every car of that year was affected, so check each car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Owners have filed 6 complaints with NHTSA, most about the engine (3), then the electrical system (2). These are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict

For most buyers, a late, low-mileage manual Modena or a Spider with full records is the car to find. The F1 car is fine if its actuators, pump and clutch check out and the 2003 software update is fitted. Choose the Challenge Stradale only if you want the track-focused car and accept the extra upkeep. Start with the Modena listings or the Spider listings, and check the Modena price guide and the F430 guide for the next model up.

Skip any car without cambelt history or proof of recall work, and be wary of early cars that may predate the variator fix. Insist on a specialist inspection, a clutch readout on F1 cars and a main dealer recall check by chassis number.

360: common questions

What is the best 360 to buy?

A late, low-mileage manual Modena is the best standard 360, according to Magneto and Hagerty. Manual hard-tops are the most desirable regular cars. The Challenge Stradale is the sharper car but is F1-only and costlier to maintain.

What goes wrong with the 360?

Known faults include early cam variator failure, F1 hydraulic leaks, worn suspension ball joints and tie rods, cracked exhaust manifolds and aluminum body corrosion. Spiders can also leak from the roof rams. Many are age-related and fixable.

Is the 360 reliable?

Mostly, yes. CarChecker calls the V8 fundamentally sound and the Modena one of the more reliable mid-engine Ferraris. Reliability depends on maintenance, particularly cambelt service and recall work.

How much does it cost to run a 360?

Budget for oil changes every 6000 miles or annually and a cambelt service every three years. ferrarimodena.com puts clutch replacement at about £1300 and four ball joints at about £1600. Total budgets quoted run from £2000 per year to £6000 over three years.

How much is a used 360?

Asking prices for the 63 cars we track for sale right now run from $82,890 to $949,900, with a median of $170,223. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the 360 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 8 recall campaigns filed for the 1999 to 2005 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for steering. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
