Ferrari 458 (Italia, Spider and Speciale) buying guide

Every used 458 has a dual-clutch gearbox and no manual alternative, so build year and gearbox history shape the buy more than the Italia, Spider or Speciale badge.

The 458 as a used buy

Every used 458 has a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and early 2010 and 2011 cars carry the most gearbox questions: ring and pinion wear on one side, sensor wiring on the other. Ask what was done to the transmission before you ask about the paint.

The generation ran from 2010 to 2015. The Italia coupe came first, with a mid-mounted 4.5-litre V8 that revs to 9000rpm. Exotic Car List says no production Ferrari engine had used direct fuel injection before it. There was never a manual, because SupercarTribe reports the interior was designed without space for one.

The V8 has no cambelts, which Autocar and evo both link to lower service bills. Wear parts are another matter. evo's UK figures are about £20k for a new clutch kit and £10k for a set of discs.

458 years and versions

The Italia launched in 2010. The Spider followed in 2011 with a two-piece folding aluminum roof and the same specs. Exotic Car List counts about 15,000 Italias and about 6,000 Spiders. A quieter exhaust arrived in 2012, along with software updates and chassis and suspension changes.

MPH suggests a late-production 2013 to 2015 car for most buyers and says 2015 is often regarded as the top year. For 2010 and 2011 cars it recommends closer scrutiny for minor early faults, with service and repair records verified. CarChecker adds that early cars had ring and pinion wear in the gearbox, though factory updates addressed most of them.

Coupe or Spider is a matter of taste. SupercarTribe suggests purists may prefer the coupe as more of a driver's car. Autocar's buying guide points out that the Spider commands a premium and that many were fitted with costly extras, so work out what those options are worth to you.

The Speciale brought 597bhp, a carbonfibre undertray, uprated ceramic brakes, magnetic dampers and a new diffuser. evo calls it the ultimate 458 and one of the finest driver's cars of all time. Pages disagree on whether it debuted in 2013 or the 2014 model year. The Speciale A was 2015 only, pairing that powertrain with the Spider's roof, and just 499 were built. Common 458 problems

Gearbox sensor wiring

Early cars can suffer damaged speed sensor wiring, and the gearbox then misses gears. The wiring insulation degrades with heat, and CarChecker says the fix can mean pulling the transaxle.

Clutch glitches

Some owners have reported clutch faults that evo says were cured by resetting the clutch-positioning sensors and updating the software. A worn clutch is a separate and expensive matter.

Ring and pinion wear

Cars from 2010 and 2011 had wear in the gearbox's ring and pinion. Factory updates sorted most of them, so look for paperwork showing the update was done.

Cam variators

Road News calls the cam variators a known weak point. The warning sign is noise on a cold start.

Camshaft damage

The engine has a reputation for reliability, but one owner's car developed camshaft damage at around 60,000 miles. It was repaired under warranty, and it is a single reported case.

Wheel arch corrosion

Early cars can corrode around the wheel arches, which is not uncommon according to Autocar and can be a costly repair. Separately, Ferrari recalled 2010 cars to replace rear arch liners whose adhesive could overheat and catch fire.

Sticky interior coating

The soft-touch coating on the switches, vents, console and door pulls can break down into a sticky mess, so any tacky patch is a sign it has started.

What to check on a used 458

  • Book a pre-purchase inspection with a Ferrari specialist that includes a diagnostic scan, a clutch wear reading, stored fault codes and an over-rev report.
  • Drive for at least 30 minutes so the gearbox is fully hot, because many dual-clutch problems only appear then.
  • Listen at a cold start for engine noise that could point to worn cam variators.
  • Ask on a 2010 or 2011 car for invoices showing the ring and pinion updates and any speed sensor wiring repair.
  • Ask for the Genuine Maintenance paperwork on a 2011 or later car, and check how much of the seven years remains.
  • Run a hand along the rear wheel arch edges and look for bubbling paint or rust, which matters most on early cars.
  • Check panel gaps for unevenness, look for overspray and blend lines, and examine the underside of the lip spoiler for scrapes.
  • Ask whether the car has been used on track, and compare the answer with the over-rev report.
  • Inspect each wheel for damage and kerbing, since a single new wheel costs £2500 according to evo.
  • Test every electronic function, including the TFT screens, which have caused problems on occasion.
  • Press the switches, vent surrounds, console and door pulls; a tacky surface means the soft-touch coating is breaking down.

458 running costs

Ferrari's Genuine Maintenance programme covers routine servicing for seven years and transfers to new owners. Parkers and Sicurauto both describe it, and evo says it applies from 2011.

The wear parts are where the money goes. evo gives UK figures of about £20k for a new clutch kit, about £700 for a set of front pads and £10k for new discs. It also puts adaptive dampers at around £1500 apiece, sold in pairs, and rear tyres at £250 apiece.

Autocar puts a set of four tyres at around £1600, and secondhand wheel sets at between £1500 and £3500. Our 458 Italia price guide covers what the cars themselves cost.

458 recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 10 recall campaigns for 2010 to 2015 cars. The most serious covers a brake system that may leak fluid and cause a loss of braking, filed for 2010 to 2015 Italias, 2012 to 2015 Spiders and the Speciale models. Two engine campaigns cover heat deforming the rear wheelhouse and heat shield assemblies on 2010 cars, and crankshafts that may fail from incorrect machining on 2011 and 2012 Italias. A front trunk latch that may not release and several air bag campaigns, including replacement Takata inflators, make up most of the rest.

Each campaign names particular cars, so a model year alone tells you little. Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm the work was done. Owners have filed 10 complaints with NHTSA, five of them about air bags. These are reports, not proven faults.

Our verdict

A late 2013 to 2015 Italia or Spider is the best-supported choice for most buyers, and the Speciale is the car to hold out for if you want the 458 at its sharpest. Look through used 458 Italias and Spiders, or weigh the Italia against the 488 GTB.

A 2010 or 2011 car needs proof that the gearbox updates and recall work were done before it is worth a deposit. Whatever the year, pay for the specialist's scan and make sure the clutch wear reading and stored fault codes are on the report.

458: common questions

What is the best 458 to buy?

A late-production 2013 to 2015 car is the pick for most buyers, and MPH says 2015 is often regarded as the top year. The Speciale is the one to hold out for if you want the most driver-focused 458, and evo calls it the ultimate version. Between coupe and Spider, SupercarTribe says purists may lean toward the coupe.

What goes wrong with the 458?

The known issues center on the gearbox: speed sensor wiring damage and, on 2010 and 2011 cars, ring and pinion wear. Cam variator noise at a cold start, wheel arch corrosion on early cars and a sticky interior coating are also reported. NHTSA lists 10 recall campaigns, one covering a brake fluid leak.

Is the 458 reliable?

Mostly yes, for a supercar. Autocar and evo both call it generally reliable compared with older Ferraris, helped by an engine with no cambelts. The early 2010 and 2011 cars are the ones that need a close look at gearbox history.

How much does it cost to run a 458?

Wear parts are the big bills. evo's UK figures include about £20k for a clutch kit, £10k for new discs and £700 for front pads. Ferrari's seven-year maintenance programme covers routine servicing on cars from 2011 and passes to new owners.

How much is a used 458?

Asking prices for the 109 cars we track for sale right now run from $195,889 to $1,990,085, with a median of $400,765. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.

Has the 458 been recalled?

NHTSA lists 10 recall campaigns filed for the 2010 to 2015 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for service brakes, hydraulic. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
