Ferrari F430 (and 430 Scuderia) buying guide
The F430 is a usable mid-engined V8 Ferrari, but cracked manifolds, F1 gearbox hydraulics and a thin service history can turn a good-looking car into a big bill.
The F430 as a used buy
The Ferrari F430 is a car to buy on its paperwork and a specialist's inspection. Cracked exhaust manifolds and F1 gearbox hydraulics are the faults that hurt, so ask for invoices covering both and pay a specialist to look the car over before you commit.
This generation runs from 2005 to 2009 and covers the coupe, the F430 Spider, the 430 Scuderia and the limited Scuderia Spider 16M. All use the 4,308cc non-turbo V8, which drives its camshafts by chain, so there is no cambelt service to budget for. The bodywork is mostly aluminum and does not rust.
It suits someone who wants to drive a Ferrari rather than store one. Auto Express thinks it may be the perfect everyday supercar if bought well, and Magneto calls it a modern classic with daily usability, provided the service history is sound.
F430 years and versions
The F430 was unveiled at the Paris show in September 2004 with 483bhp. The Spider followed at Geneva in 2005 and is mechanically identical to the coupe. The 430 Scuderia arrived at Frankfurt in September 2007 with 503bhp, and the Scuderia Spider 16M came in November 2008, limited to 499 cars. We track each separately: every F430 for sale, the F430 Spider market, the 430 Scuderia market and the Scuderia Spider market.
Against the standard F430, the 430 Scuderia loses 100kg. Its changes include a Lexan cover over the engine, carbon-ceramic brakes and wheels of reduced weight. Auto Express finds collectors drawn to the Scuderia models, while buyers who mean to drive their car pick a standard coupe or Spider.
Only around 10% of cars have the six-speed manual; the rest are F1 paddle-shift. Manuals are rare and carry a premium, yet Auto Express, Magneto and evo all rate the F1 gearbox and say a manual is not automatically the better choice. Given the F1 hydraulics below, a good history counts for more than gearbox type.
Carbon-ceramic brakes were optional until late 2007 and standard after that, which matters when discs need replacing. Magneto says the early cars need not be avoided. Extras worth looking for, per Auto Express, are carbon-fiber parts, tire-pressure monitoring, parking sensors and the original stereo with subwoofer.

Common F430 problems
Cracked exhaust manifolds
Cracks in the manifolds show up especially on cars up to 2007, and Magneto says no F430 is immune. A slight ticking can mean a cracking weld. Many cars had redesigned manifolds fitted under warranty, and a new one with labor runs over four grand, evo says.
Catalytic converter breakup
A catalytic converter can break up and get sucked into the engine, which wrecks it. Treat the exhaust as an engine question, not just a noise or emissions one.
F1 system hydraulics
Air in the F1 system can upset gear selection, and a new pump normally cures it. A failed actuator is the pricier fault, a £6000 replacement according to Magneto.
Clutch master cylinder
A recall covered leaky clutch master cylinders, which could affect gear selection. Ask whether the work was done on the car you are viewing.
Engine mounts
Engine mounts crack, and replacing them takes a lot of labor.
Ball-joints
The main suspension weakness, they should be treated as a consumable. An official dealer charges around £600 to change them, evo says.
Spider roof straps and hoses
Roof tensioning straps on the Spider can stretch. Caught early the fix is £1,200, but Auto Express says leaving it can cost £6,000. Separately, 2005 to 2007 Spiders had a recall for cracking convertible-top hydraulic hoses in the engine compartment.
Lights, switches and trim
The four rear light units can work loose once their fixings snap, and each costs £600 to replace. Switches can go sticky, and dash-top leather can shrink.
What to check on a used F430
Magneto and Fully Sorted both tell buyers to have a specialist check for cracked manifolds, so the viewing is about deciding which cars deserve that fee.
- Listen for a slight ticking from the exhaust, which can mean a cracking weld, and have the manifolds inspected whatever you hear.
- With the undertray removed, look for fluid dripping from the gearbox actuator.
- Invoices should show any F1 pump or actuator work and confirm the clutch master cylinder recall was done.
- On an F1 car, ask how many miles the clutch has done, since Magneto puts F1 clutch life at about 16,000 miles against 20,000 to 30,000 for a manual.
- Cycle the roof on a Spider, checking the soft-top alignment, and ask whether the tensioning straps have been replaced.
- Engine mounts crack, so ask when they were last changed and look for cracking in them.
- Ball-joints count as consumables, so find out when they were last replaced and feel for play on a test drive.
- Bubbling paint around the arches, window surrounds, front bumper and rear buttresses is worth hunting for.
- Look for hazed headlights and frosting on the instrument cluster.
- Ask how long the car has stood unused, because cars laid up for long periods can have seized brake caliper pistons.
- Press each of the four rear light units to confirm none has worked loose from broken fixings.
F430 running costs
The factory plan calls for a service each year or at 12,500 miles, with Minor and Major visits taking turns. Auto Express puts an independent at around £800 for a Minor and £1,200 for a Major, and expects £2,500 to £3,500 a year in maintenance in total.
Wear items hold the larger sums. Evo prices a new clutch at around £2500, or closer to £4500 with release bearing and flywheel, and says replacing carbon-ceramic discs could be around £10k. Add the manifold, F1 actuator and Spider strap figures above. These are UK figures in pounds.
Our F430 price guide has live asking prices by model year if you want to set the purchase against those bills.
F430 recalls and complaints
NHTSA lists three recall campaigns for 2005 to 2009 cars. One covers hydraulic hoses for the convertible top inside the engine compartment on 2005 to 2007 Spiders. A 2022 campaign takes in 430 models among many other Ferraris and is filed under hydraulic service brakes. A 2006 campaign covers 2005 and 2006 coupes and Spiders with the manual gearbox, where a clutch pump part could crack and leak fluid from the brake and clutch hydraulic system.
Owners have filed 6 complaints with NHTSA, one each about air bags, the electrical system, the engine, exterior lighting, the power train and service brakes, with no crashes, fires, injuries or deaths. They are reports, not proven faults. A campaign for a model year does not mean every car was affected, so check the car's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.

Our verdict
Find a standard coupe or Spider with a documented history and the F1 gearbox. It is the car to use, and the sources rate that gearbox highly. Browse used F430s or Spiders.
Insist on invoices for manifold, F1 and clutch work, and a specialist inspection before you pay. Skip any car with a ticking exhaust or fluid under the gearbox.

F430: common questions
What is the best F430 to buy?
A standard F430 coupe or Spider with a full service history and the F1 gearbox is the one to find. Collectors prefer the Scuderia models, but a driver gets most of the appeal from the regular car. Early cars need not be avoided.
What goes wrong with the F430?
The main faults are cracked exhaust manifolds, F1 gearbox hydraulic problems, cracked engine mounts and worn ball-joints. Catalytic converters can also break up and damage the engine. Spiders can have stretched roof straps.
Is the F430 reliable?
Mostly, when it has been maintained well. Sources stress a sound service history and a specialist inspection, and the weak points are well known. Expect real bills if the manifolds, F1 actuators or clutch need work.
How much does it cost to run an F430?
Auto Express reckons £2,500 to £3,500 a year on maintenance, with Minor and Major services around £800 and £1,200 at an independent. Evo puts a clutch at around £2500 and carbon-ceramic discs at around £10k. Those are UK figures.
How much is a used F430?
Asking prices for the 84 cars we track for sale right now run from $130,691 to $1,399,413, with a median of $280,747. Model year, version, mileage and history move the price most; the prices by model year and fair values on this page show where a car should sit.
Has the F430 been recalled?
NHTSA lists 3 recall campaigns filed for the 2005 to 2009 model years as of Oct 31, 2026, the latest for service brakes, hydraulic. Not every car was affected, so check the VIN of any car you're considering at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
